Nothing beats a summer evening of live music under the stars! Even though there wasn't a breeze at all, we enjoy being outside! One of the things I love most about these Delray Beach concerts is how easy and welcoming they are. Bring your own chairs, blankets, and even a picnic dinner, then sit back and enjoy great music with friends and neighbors. I'm so grateful that Delray Beach continues to offer these free summer concerts while so many of us are still here and the snowbirds are away. It's a wonderful way to bring the community together, attract visitors from all over, and support our local economy. Delray old school Square has many different events and entertainment. Has a nice large field where you could set up your chairs and there's a large band stand. I've been to many concerts and events here ,the other night they had a nice drone show. They really do a good job. I don't know how they do it with the drones. When you're finished with your event at the old school Square you continue on down Atlantic Avenue where there's plenty of restaurants, bars, and entertainment. read more

Old school Square is easy located on the corner of Swinton Ave and Atlantic Ave. Its a beautiful restored building with a nice grassy area in front that houses art exhibits, live music and events. Saturdays during season there's a green market with vendors selling everything from fruits and vegetables to pet accessories. Don't forget to check out the 100 foot Christmas tree which is lit up from the beginning of December to the end of the holidays. A perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit. read more

Huge grassy field with plenty of areas to lounge out and picnic with the family. Several art exhibits in front of the Cornell Art Museum. The square is easy to find at the intersection of Swinton Ave and Atlantic Ave across from the busy bars and restaurants. Art fairs are the first Friday of every month in the courtyard at the Square. Dont forget to check out the 100 year old Christmas tree during the holidays at the NE corner. read more

A very nice courtyard to walk around or relax your feet after a long day of shopping. The large art exhibits on the cement slab and in the grassy patch were interesting. The Old School is the home of the Cornell Art Museum and I took a quick tour of the inside today with a small donation. read more

I stumbled to the Old School Square Museum, during the Sunday open market. Beautiful building that used to be a school, the floors & moldings are original to this beautiful and historic building. They have a store which holds many beautiful items for sale. There is a garage near by, or street parking. read more

Just a quick walk through the tree so Spensyr and baby O. could add it to their list of things done in Delray. If you have only driven by and never gone in you should check it out. You'll find displays with Santa and a few of his reindeer, a train set, and even a Kwanzaa celebration. The "ice skating" rink was closed, but we all enjoyed taking a trek through the 100' tall tree. read more

Delray Beach's largest historic district is the Old School Square Historic District. It was created from the Delray Elementary built in 1913 on the corner of Swinton and Atlantic Avenues for grades one through twelve and the 1925 Delray High School which was built just north of the elementary building. The last graduation in the high school building was held in 1949 and by the mid 1980's, the Palm Beach School District had abandoned both buildings. The Delray Beach Historical Society gathered together concerned citizens and spearheaded an effort to restore the buildings in order to help a struggling downtown. Old School Square was locally designated in 1988 by the City of Delray Beach. In 1990 the elementary school opened as the Cornell Museum of Art and the Crest Theater opened in the former high school in 1993. The restoration of the buildings revitalized Atlantic Avenue. On the street there are many restaurants, shops, and galleries. Just off Atlantic is the Pineapple Arts District and a brand new food hall. In addition to the art museum and theater in Old School Square there is also an outdoor bandshell. This is also the site of a large weekly farmers market during the winter. During the month of December the square is the site of a 100 foot Christmas tree, carousel. and holiday decorations. It is a must visit if you are in the area during Christmas time. I love how Delray Beach saved two historic buildings and used them to reinvigorate the entire downtown. On any given weekend you will see something fun going on here. I came here on a Sunday and the green market was going on in the square. Lots of fresh produce and different booths with food to try. We bought fresh salsa and guacamole and there was a place that also had vegan pudding. This market is a must try for vegetarian and vegan or people who love fresh food! read more

Currently have the Flora display with the 6x6 picture room. Thought admission was free for Delray residence on Sundays, no longer true. There are 2 floors of art. We enjoyed the first floor with a room full of dangling embroidered flowers. Upstairs was a bit warm. But, you could go through the small collection in about 30 mins. Nice photo ops. Free garage parking on Sundays. Lots of local restaurants to enjoy before or after. read more

Small, yes. But fantastic location for all kinds of exhibits and possibly fundraising events. I've lived here for 5 years and never really knew that this old school building was a functioning museum until I walked by on the ave after a local art fest that was nearby. Saw the signage displaying the dates and names of the current art exhibit which is the works of paper art of all kinds. Right now, until August 24th 2014, the Paper Art exhibit is on going. It is of paper mache sculptures, scherenschnitte (beautiful and complicated art of cutting paper designs from one piece of paper without breaking it), collages, and many other art works done with using paper. The admissions lady mentioned that at the end of the exhibit in August or September, they will have a new exhibit that features the art works of local artists. I will be returning for that for sure. Admission is 5 dollars (money is used to help maintain the building, run electricity, and advertise their museum). Hours are from 9? until 4:30pm (doors close at 4:30, but you can look however long you want if you come in before 4:30) and they are usually closed on Mondays. read more

I must begin by saying I love Delray Beach!! Sooo much culture on every corner! Instead of partaking in delicious food, met up with a Yelp friend to visit the Cornell Museum at Old School Square! Admission is reasonable although the facility is small in size. The current exhibit featured vibrant photos and history. Like many other museums, the exhibits change over time. The museum is a two story home that has been a Delray treasure for over 100 years! Great history there. Interactive children's room on the second floor for the kiddies! Plenty of parking options around the area--some for free even. read more

What a great space along Atlantic Ave. On this night, the festivities were on and the party in full force. The tree as the centerpiece was dressed to the hilt with the carousel, ice skating and other activities to keep everyone engaged. Add to all of this the stage with a performance underway and it felt like a good time was had by all! The layout allowed everyone to move without feeling as crowded as it really was and security was plentiful so I had no concerns for my safety. This is a great space just off the main strip with its many distractions. read more

Bring your own chair (or rent one for $5), listen to great music, enjoy the night breeze, get a drink from the bar & sit back & relax. Place used to be great pre-covid. Now BEWARE they have been hacked I keep getting bs e-mails supposedly from them to get a refund by opening a zip file. My show was cancelled and no reschedule so I e-mailed them and that started this Called them twice to alert them to this because this can wreck havoc with others and NO RESPONSE. Very sad way to treat long time customers(or anyone for that matter) read more

I have attended many events in Old School House Square and always been impressed. It is centrally located to Atlantic Ave in Delray Beach. This is the first time I attended the annual 100ft Christmas tree lighting and loved how they laid out the ice skating rink, food vendors and the tree itself all while live performances were taking place on the stage nearby. read more

I vaguely knew about museum at Old School Sq and am happy a friend convinced me to finally go. Such a hidden gem! The volunteer at the front was extremely friendly and ready to share the museum's rich history - like how it was built in 1913 and how it was a former elementary school. Their current exhibit features the stories of pirates and runs through late October. I was a bit skeptical at first but I think they do a good job of making it an interactive experience. Kids and families would love it. It features Don Maitz, the artist who made image of Captain Morgan famous - very interesting. Upstairs they continued the exhibit as well as knick knacks from the 30s, 40s and 50s mainly. read more

This little area in downtown Delray Beach is fan-freaking-tastic! I love the live music, the open space, the food trucks, the weekly Green Market... it's all a blast! Very family-friendly, group-friendly, guest-friendly, etc. The fact you can drink a beer while watching a band play live music on the grass just adds to the wonder of this place. When I visit Delray during the holidays, I have the privilege of going to OSS and I love the Christmas tree lighting and all of the festivities! My favorite is the Christmas village with Santa Claus for not only the kids but for the doggies, too. I'm looking forward to the 'Screen on the Green' outdoor movies and 'Free Friday Concerts' this year. read more

Old School Square is an absolute amazement! Who knew??? The Cornell Museum is a magical contemporary art museum in a beautiful 100 year-old school house. The setting and lighting creates a wonder space to enjoy the edgy art! The staff is incredibly kind! The Free Friday concerts at the outdoor Pavilion stage are a blast! The Crest Theatre has world class entertainment in a very intimate setting. The classes offered at the Creative Art School are incredible. I have been driving by for years and just recently discovered all this campus has to offer when I attended a gathering in the Fieldhouse (which is a gym right out of the movie Hoosiers!) read more

Cool venue on Saturdays from 9 to 2 they host the Delray Beach Green Market. I went there today and there were about 30 local vendors ranging from produce, pastries, natural soaps and no kill local animal shelters!! Love it read more

Old School Square, a National Historic site, has served the greater Delray Beach community through visual and performing arts and entertainment for over 25 years. This award-winning, nationally recognized center successfully combined historic preservation and the arts, igniting the 1990s renaissance of Delray Beach. As the community's gathering place for everything from free concerts, to Town Hall meetings, to festivities surrounding the 100-foot Christmas Tree and so much more, Old School Square continues to be the beating heart. The campus welcomes over half a million people each year for programs, classes, events and rental activities and includes the Crest Theatre (c. 1925) the Cornell Art Museum (c. 1913), the Fieldhouse (c. 1925) the Pavilion (opened in 2002) and the Creative Arts School. Art on the Square is an annual, outdoor, juried fine art show presented by the Cornell Art Museum at Old School Square in March.

History

Established in 1986.

Old School Square was created thanks to the determination of a local group of citizens who saved the 1913 Delray Elementary and 1925 Delray High School buildings from demolition after they were abandoned by the Palm Beach County School District in the mid 1980's. Over $7 million was raised to restore and re-adapt the facilities for use as a museum and theatre. These Delray Beach Schools are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The entire site serves as a gathering place for the community.

The evening featured several short plays, each about 15 minutes long, with a 20-minute intermission in between. After the performances, the playwrights came on stage for a Q&A session, which gave the audience a chance to hear about their creative process and ask questions. It was a wonderful addition to the evening. I'm usually away this time of year, so this was my first opportunity to attend, and I'm so glad I did. The tickets were also very reasonably priced, making it an excellent value for a night of live theater. I hope to make this an annual tradition and will definitely be back next year!

There is not a bad seat in the house. The Playhouse is located in a residential neighborhood on Lake Ida. Prior to the Show we sat outside and enjoyed the cool breeze overlooking the lake and the speedboats riding by. It was a delightful experience all around. During the year they offer subscriptions for each season, including shows, plays, musicals, for all ages. This particular show was a sellout. The group had been there before and they were asked to return because the reviews were so excellent. I agree and so did everyone in my party. The chairs are comfortable and it is handicapped accessible for people with wheelchairs, scooters or walkers. It's a very relaxed atmosphere with free parking.

Owners of the cars rent spaces here and get to play pinball machines and hang out at the bar, they can have their own private parties. We were lucky and got to go to one of the parties. I think outside people can rent the place for the night and have a party of their own. They had a lot of good food and we had fun playing pinball machines and checking out all the old cars. Nice place I'd go back to.

The large gift shop had a lot to choose from at different prices. We came for the Wine Down event happening right in front of the Delray Affair in April. Wine, beer & soft drinks were available for purchase & I got to unwind & explore the exhibits. The WineDown will be open Friday & Saturday from 12-6 PM and Sunday from 12-5 PM. Proceeds benefit the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce & the Cornell Museum.

Last week, everything came together and we were finally able to stop by the museum after a nearby lunch. The museum is located on the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Swinton. We've passed by many time going east on the avenue. There is metered parking on the side streets. The museum is in the hundred year old plus Delray School House. We entered and were greeted by the docent/volunteer. She told us a little about the building's history and which classrooms were originally located where before the remodeling was done. She also told us that they have no permanent exhibits, and that all the art work in the building was for sale. If you were interested in buying something, you should inquire about the price of the piece in the museum store. The first floor was occupied with works by the American artist, Dorothy Gillespie. Although she was a painter, she also worked in many different media. She was well known for her creative, colorful metal works of art. One quote compares her level of metal craft and skill as equal to Chihuly and his glassworks. On the second floor -- yes, there is a big staircase, but we took the elevator from inside the gift shop/store -- are works by Chilean-born Gustavo Novoa. Approximately 30 paintings show colorful, luxurious jungle scenes with animals. The volunteer said his art reminded her of the lushness of Gauguin's paintings. On second floor, there is also an exhibit of mosaics from a Mexican school. They are portraits of famous people -- actors, singers, etc. You will recognize most of them. The tiny pieces are put together in intricate patterns to form the faces. In some of them, they incorporate other materials -- like a piece of jewelry as a broach, leather as clothing, etc. They are fascinating to view up close first and then step back to see the overall portrait. The exhibits rotate periodically. The museum entrance is free, but there is a suggested donation of $5 per person which we happily paid. I'm glad we finally got a chance to visit.

I enjoyed "Ethan Bloom" the independent film presented at the Movies of Delray. For $8 I had a fabulous evening here. This sweet coming of age film had an All-Star cast that was both funny and profound. The film touched on themes of grief, spiritual identity, first love & belief that faith and love can transcend religious differences. I enjoyed the background information presented by the director & producer Herschel Faber. Afterwards he answered many questions from the audience. I used to enjoy film clubs & events in my NYC independent theater; the Movies of Delray are truly a gem here!

Those are truly the best!

The theater itself is upscale and feels more like a luxury experience than your typical movie theater. I've been to other theaters that try to offer food service, some closer to this level and others that feel more like a regular theater that just happens to serve food. I definitely prefer the upscale version, and this place does it right. Service is handled well and doesn't distract from the movie, and they stop taking orders with about 45 minutes left, which I thought was a smart move. It is pricey, so I wouldn't go all the time, but once or twice a year it's a great treat and a really enjoyable experience.

I would like to formally file a complaint against the male manager and Frontdesk employees working today at around noon. I have never been treated so horribly. I was literally called a liar by the male Frontdesk guy. He said showtimes aren't displayed on Google maps what does that even matter, dude? I'm just really disappointed. I used to love going here and now I don't think I can ever go back.
