However, I haven't visited this place for years, and was looking forward to going on a Saturday for a mates birthdays. There were 16 of us on a Saturday afternoon, starting here for food and drink before heading to a few other places in Didsbury. It's actually a really nice place - the interior is lovely and location spot on. It often gets scrutinised for being a bit pretentious with the crowd it attracts, but I have to say I prefer the crowd of didsbury locals - this place is always filled with a nice crowd and attracts no trouble. You can sit outside under the heated area, inside at the main bar, or in the restaurant/dining bit. Each area is always busy, with a bustling atmosphere and traditional decor. I ordered the Butternut Squash Risotto for my dinner which was the wrong choice - I should have gone for the burgers which a lot of my friends went for, and they looked amazing. The burgers came with a nice looking ciabatta bun, and were fully stacked with meat, salad and cheese. My risotto was very standard., The butternut squash was a little bit hard, and I didn't really feel full or satisfied after it. At least I had buckets of sweet potato fries to pick at from everyone elses order afterwards, which were home cooked and delicious! Quite a pricey place to come for lunch and a drink if you expect it to be a typical 'pub/bar' type place. But it is west didsbury after all. I'll be back to give the menu a second chance with a competely different order!

We ordered drinks and food at the bar on a tab then chose a lovely table in a window bay. We both ordered the steak sandwich which came with onions, tomato chutney and chips. At under £10 it was good value, although did require mustard and pepper to jazz it up a bit! It was a shame it was chucking it down with rain so we couldn't appreciate the outdoor area - which looked like it had good potential. Nice pub that I'd visit again if I was in the area.

The staff were all very welcoming, and we were all really impressed with the friendly, efficient service. The menu was full of English comfort foods...and they executed everything beautifully. Just look at my photos to get an idea...I tried the goats cheese and caramelised onion strudel, which came balanced on potatoes and perfect ratatouille. If you ever find yourself in this part of the country, it is definitely worth popping in here for some lunch! *Pro tip: It sounded like they get very booked up in the evening, so ring ahead to ensure you get a table!!

A deceptively large space inside, with a few tables outside when the weather's good - there's not much of a view though, just the road you've walked up. The pub is owned by Marston's, so expect to see a couple of their ales on tap. Apart from that there's not much else available unless you're partial to a commercial lager or two. Of the three pubs in Buxton we visited that day, this was my least favourite, it just lacked the charm and traditional features of the others and looked far too 'chainy' for my taste.

Being a Wetherspoons it does have a great selection of beers at low low prices as well as being a place for all sorts of people to hang out in, loads of people were watching the rugby when I was there too. I was driving so wasn't drinking bus I was disappointed by their selection of non-alco beers. They sell all sorts of Brewdog's so why not the Nanny State? That would be a great addition

I visited The Gateway recently with colleagues from work for an impromptu Christmas lunch…read more The Gateway is a large pub with plenty of seating, and they're able to accommodate even large groups of people - we had 6 but the table would have easily seated 8-10. They also take reservations if you definitely wanted a table, and for groups you can also order ahead for food if you want. I'm not sure whether this is just the staff at The Gateway being helpful, or whether it's a Wetherspoons policy, but this was a nice bonus. The drinks range is fairly standard, though they did have a couple of craft ales on draught - I went for the Devils Backbone, which was a decent enough pint. One thing to note, though, is that Wetherspoons "Craft on Draught" ales aren't imports - they're brewed in the UK specifically for the chain to match their US counterparts. The food menu is pretty extensive, with everything ranging from burgers and hot dogs to classics like fish and chips. There's also the daily "clubs" which provide either discounts or extra options - Friday being "Fish Friday" for instance. I went for the chilli dog, which came with chips and some onion rings as well as a choice of a drink, so I got the food with my pint for around £7.50. The chilli dog was nice, and a good portion of food. The hot dog was a large frankfurter type sausage, so for those who don't like the firmer skin on bratwurst sausages for instance this should be agreeable. The chilli was tasty, if not overly spicy, and the onion rings were well cooked. All in all, everyone in our party was satisfied with their food and for the price I have no complaints. I've given The Gateway an A-OK 3/5 which, in all honesty, shouldn't be taken as a negative because it's a wholly agreeable pub with friendly staff and the service we received was excellent, but it is at the end of the day a Wetherspoons pub and I think a "pub-by-numbers" type chain generally tends to get noticed for the sub-par ones than the good ones. The Gateway is, then, one of the better Wetherspoons I've been to and I could see myself returning if I needed somewhere to get a cheap filling meal and a beer, but not necessarily over an indy venue in Manchester.

We went out on a mission this weekend to eat some fish, and originally considered mooching to australasia but in the end couldn't be bothered. We gambled on the red lion doing some decent fish dishes and we were not disappointed ! They had 3 seafood starters and 3 mains on the specials menu, including a couple of others on their regular menu so plenty to choose from ! We opted for the potted shrimp and scallops to start. Both were brilliant, the potted shrimp was fresh and buttery and the flavours really complimented each other. The scallops were cooked well and other half LOVED the parsnip purée. For the mains we had sea bass and cod, served with veg and mashed potatoes / crushed new potatoes with spinach. Firstly WOW the mash at this place is incredible. Both pieces of fish were cooked brilliantly and everything else on the plate was delicious. We were stuffed at the end and very satisfied with our meal ! Even though it's been on our radar for a while, I was super excited to see that The Red Lion in Stockport was nominated and while not just around the corner from our house, it's still very close to one of our favourite walking destinations - Lyme Park. We went on a Sunday and my wife tucked into their delicious beef Sunday lunch, coming with all the trimmings including a large Yorkshire pudding, fresh gravy and an exciting array of Vegetables. I went for the fish and chips which was different class - pure light batter, homemade chips and excellent mushy peas. The prices at the Red Lion definitely are around the gastropub area - you're taking about everything costing over a tenner but for a Sunday lunch of such good quality you don't mind paying that much. They also have a great selection of real ales and quality craft beers on offer. If I'm in the area then I'd definitely go back, although I'm also a fan of the Rams Head down the road in Disley so I would probably alternate between the two if it was a regular venture out. I'd say that it's really worth the nomination for MFDF and good to see that restaurants and pubs outside of the city centre are getting more and more recognition.
