History, like it or not is giving the facts and not trying to use words to be politically correct. The blacks here were "slaves", NOT enslaved people. The owners were "masters" and NOT enslavers. Let's keep the politics and liberal narrative out and just give the facts. Also, they only accept cards and no cash. Cash is legal tender everywhere....but not here. I was terribly disappointed with the whole experience and left early. I was looking for historical information but what was given was a liberal sappy "victim" story. We can't change history whether we agree with it or not. No one is saying slavery was good but it is still a part of our history and should be told accurately.... Skip this place and find a better plantation where they are interested in giving factual information. There was little about the running of the planation, life in antebellum NC etc...

Ayr Mount is in Hillsborough, NC. The property is on the National Register of Historic Places. The…read moreproperty grounds are open daily and house tours are available on certain days and times, just follow the signs to the parking area and either to the Poet's Walk (one mile trail) or the House. Ayr Mount was built in 1815 and made of brick (you can see fingerprints in some of the bricks from the workers). He named it for his birthplace in Ayr, Scotland. William Kirkland was a merchant and built his house along the Native American Trading Path. Kirkland had fourteen children and the property stayed in the family for four generations. If I remember correctly he had 57 grandchildren. Richard Jenrette bought the house in 1985 then donated it to the Classical American Home Preservation Trust and we can view the property. The house features tall ceilings; and intricate details; a lot of the furniture are family pieces. I highly recommend touring this house if in the Hillsborough Area.

Some parts of the trail were a little overgrown, but still passable.

The Science of Sour event had everything from pickle tasting tables to local restaurants [Mixed Korean Bistro] passing out kimchee/sauerkraut samples to sourdough versus rye bread tastings [Boulted Bread] to build you own pickle derby cars. While full drinks are available for purchase, they also had a handful of beer/liquor vendors passing out samples: Haw River Farmhouse Ales, Bull City Burger & Brewery passing out a Golden Pickle ale, Mystic and Fair Game Beverage Co. handing out liquor samples and even a couple business with kombucha samplings. Joe Van Gogh was also passing out some iced coffee upstairs! In addition to the local business, there were lots of "science" stations: make your own sauerkraut workshop, a hands on station to see dough with gluten versus no gluten, and the Fermentophone was awesome! A multi-sensory installation in which an algorithmically generated musical composition is performed by LIVING cultures of bacteria and yeast! The after hours events are always laid out with lots of space for the large crowd that gathers. I do think the tickets for these events are a little steep for what you get [$25/non-members & $20/members]. It's convenient because you get a lot of information, but you also might find yourself trying to be sold products by some of the local vendors. Also, make sure you "plan" out your evening when you get to the event and check the handout they give you. They usually have special Q&A's or sign-up required activities, so you'll have to make sure you're on top of that. Overall, the after hours events remind me of a pop-up shop that you have to pay to get into BUT get the benefit of being guaranteed a tasting/testing of products. AND in addition to the local pop-up shops, you also get science "how-to" lessons on the subject being discussed. If this is your idea of a good night, then you'll love these events.

It is BYOB on the bus and there is one stop for about 10-15 minutes during the 1.5 hour tour. We ended up grabbing a beer at the Accordion Club during our stop. It's BYOB but there's a 15 minute at Louella's if you forget to bring something. **Let me just start by saying, if you're easily triggered or don't know how to take a joke, this tour is not for you** The comedian, "Trevor that only works on Sunday's" was hilarious. He started with roll call when we got on the bus and got to know a bit about each person. We rode the bus for about 2 hours learning about Durham. As a Durham transplant, I actually learned more than I thought I would. When the windows are down, it's a bit cold so make sure to bring a jacket! They ended up putting up the windows after our break and it was warm and cozy inside! Overall, I really enjoyed my time at the Bull City Laughs and I'd recommend to my friends.
