I love their Alaska section of books. Even in a small town they have a great art supply and games. Their prices are reasonable. I also love the recommendation from the staff. If you're lucky there is a quality cafe behind the store in a secret door. Best coffee in town. read more

Our first stop in our cruise is the city of Sitika,Alaska this a quite small village with restaurants and stores. One of the store we visited was the Old Harbor Books my wife was book about Alaska for her school and others books she like. I brought some books also we booth enjoy this book store. I got lost in this bookstore. I mean this in the sense that I wanted to claim one of the chairs, become friends with the staff, read all the books and never leave. Located near the end of the main retail street in Sitka, Old Harbor Books offers everything from stationery and "librarian candles" to local artistic postcards and classic novels. My favorite part about the shop was the clever handwritten labels on several of the books explaining why it's a good read and what to expect (staff's picks, etc.). I highly recommend popping in during your visit for a dose of feel good vibes and literacy. Note: it appears they have a book club. read more

My wife and young son were on an Alaska cruise and stopped at Sitka as one of our port days. This bookstore is the cutest shop and right along the main road downtown. They have a great collection of children's books and toys (in addition to regular books and everything else you would expect in a local bookstore!). We were looking for a gift to bring back for one of my son's friends and one of the employees went out of her way to help us find something. The service is truly above and beyond here and there's nothing better than supporting a local business! I highly recommend stopping here to take a look at their selection. After being trapped on a cruise ship for five days, having not brought enough reading material to while away the hours, I was thrilled to spy Old Harbor Books in Sitka, AK. I initially went inside looking for material by David Foster Wallace, thinking that reading 'A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again' while doing that supposedly fun thing (that I'll never do again) would somehow be infinitely appropriate. Or, speaking of Infinity, I also searched for Infinite Jest, a book I'd pledged to read and had purchased before leaving on vacation...but that had not arrived in time. The proprietors went above and beyond to search their database for me and then combed the aisles of books, looking in every remotely-possibly-filed category for DFW. They didn't have what I wanted, but me being me, I still managed to walk away $65.67 poorer. The well-lighted place, rich selection, and ambience made me willing to spend a half hour browsing and impulse buying. read more
