I grew up coming here and I always come back every time I am in town. This place is a REAL old style military surplus place, you never know what you are going to find. One time it's a bunch of military issue tool sets, the next time it's a bunch of military field phones, but I always find something fun. If you don't see what you are looking for ask them. They seem to have a cavernous back room and other warehouses with all kinds of goodies stashed away. read more

I have bought from Tim many times in the past, and was happy to deal with him -but my recent trade with him changed my attitude towards him. I left him with gear as a trade/sell package; he has yet to send me a check, or even reach out to me to explain why he won't pay as promised. I am very frustrated - and saddened that he does not respond. My advice to those who deal with him - make sure that he pays you with cash, or provides you a check. Better yet - If you deal with him, make sure that he pays you in cash. read more

Walked into Old Grouch's Military Surplus and was greeted by a monotone "hello." I was the only one in the store, and still there was not a welcoming presence. The guy at the counter didn't look up from his phone until I was ready to ask for some prices on some items. It is a small store. Mostly uniforms and field gear. It could be organized better for the small space. Most of the uniforms have prices, but there are bins of items with no prices and he comes up with it on the fly. Some vintage items like WWII helmet nets. Vietnam jungle fatigues, and miscellaneous canvas field gear. But finding it requires you to search for them. I was interested in an m1 helmet liner that was out on the floor. And when asked about it, the guy said "the liner is not for sale, I'm going to make helmet sets." Which is fine. But do not have an item that you are not willing to sell out next to items that ARE for sale. Overall not too impressed, not very helpful, and there's better quality military surplus stores out there. Perhaps Old Grouch is a fitting name for this establishment. read more

These guys had an uphill battle after the hurricane, but seemed to survive with entrepreneurial determination. I scored a great topographical map of the area around my house here in north Carolina. They also have a nice selection of real us surplus goods for camping, collecting etc. read more

Very odd. Very chaotic. Not worth stopping. We have a huge military history buff in our family and he was disappointed.

Neat place to dig around look for various uniforms, patches, equipment, and all things military related. If you are a collector, stop in and see him! read more

Inventory was awful. I tried to have a conversation with the owner about the last time I was there, about a year and a half ago, and he wanted no part of talking and honestly, was borderline rude. I will never go back, very disappointing. read more

Run! I've been waiting nearly two months for my order. Phone rings busy all the time. No one answers emails. When I can get through on the phone I'm given incorrect information. First tracking number provided was someone else's order, second tracking number never made it to the post office. Update: Finally received an email today that the order has been shipped. We'll see. Update2: Item received - THEY SENT A CUTAWAY STORE SAMPLE WHICH WAS INCOMPLETE, MISSING A CORNER, AND NOT FIT FOR USE. TOTAL FAIL. read more

I placed order no. 19334 on August 30, 2018, and my credit card was charged $58.99 on Sept. 4, 2018. As of May 14, 2019, I have not received merchandise, nor a refund. BUYER BEWARE. One star because I HAD been a happy customer (and because my zero star review was not accepted. Jim read more

We went here to find a rucksack for my husband (he needed one for work), and we were not disappointed. The salesman was very helpful and knowledgeable. We looked at an older bag, and he made sure we knew how to fix the quick release instead of having us figure it out for ourselves, even though we ended up getting a different bag. read more

***FRAUDULENT COMPANY!!!*** DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS SCAM COMPANY!! I ordered product on 1/25/19 with 5-7 day shipping. It is now APRIL 3, 2019 AND STILL HAVE YET TO RECIEVE!! I spoke with someone via phone on 2/12/19, saying they had a shipping problem but was shipping out that day. I have tried calling NUMEROUS times since and there is no answer. They also NOT responded to my 4 emails sent!! read more

Stopped in after seeing the signs on the interstate. Lots of actual military surplus that I don't find at my local shop. It's cluttered, but that's how I remember all the surplus stores growing up. Boot selection was a little lacking because they sell actual surplus and don't get a steady run of sizes, but they were upfront about that. Worth the stop going by on I-40 to stretch your legs. The little diner across the highway is good for a bite to eat too. read more

The guy running the place is a bit of a grouch. If you know what you want he'll tell you if he has it or not. He's not real accommodating to browsers. read more

Sounds like the two other reviews have never visited this little shop. I was driving along I-40 today and decided to stop. The store is not very hard to find, google and my gps both brought me right there. It's a little shop, in a little town, the sign is fading - but I like it. When you walk in, you are totally bombarded with visual stimulation. There is literally. Stuff. Everywhere. There's a pile of stuff in the front of the store - stuff everywhere. They had everything from boots to MREs to belts and collectibles. The man working there was very friendly, greeted me the second I walked into the store. I told him that I came in because of the billboard and he said that lots of his customers do. He said that someone who works at the store (I wasn't paying enough attention), goes on the radio sometimes. They've had Alaskan honey mooners pop into the shop too. Chatty, friendly, lots of stories. I didn't buy anything today, but I'll definitely be back! read more

Don't listen to the above idiot. The guys in the shop are absolutely fantastic! I've been buying from them for several years now. They are awesome about posting normal and specialty items on Facebook and have always quickly answered all my questions! Fair prices and a great atmosphere! So good my work bought some bulk items from them last winter. read more

I placed an order in December and at the tiem the website said it could take 4 weeks to ship. Nearly a month later my credit card was charged and I assumed that the item would ship shortly -- that did not happen. I emailed them twice and have never received a reply. I called them and was told (very cheerfully) that the item was finally ready to ship but there was a computer issue holding up the label printing. IT would go out as soon as the computer was fixed. That was a week ago. Today is 3 months since I placed the order. Doesn't look good. I would NEVER do business with them again!!!!!! read more

Absolutely ripped me off and stole my money. Took the online order, then never sent my improved poncho with sack. Has only answered four phone calls over 8.5 months, and absolutely does not answer voicemail or emails. Was able to get a hold of Tim over the phone and he promised to send the poncho, sack, and refund for my troubles. Three weeks later: nothing. No refund check, no poncho and sack as promised. This was my Christmas gift, and it's the end of August! Buyer, take your business to another small business. read more

Such an elusive, kind-sounding crook who promises to make things right, but steals your money. I ordered an improved poncho and pouch, NINE MONTHS ago, and doubt I will ever received it. It was a Christmas gift paid for with my hard-earned money. He promises to send a refund and the item... and never returns your phone calls or emails. Take your business elsewhere!!! read more

Online order never sent. No refund as promised. Lied to on multiple occasions when I was able to make contact. Thieves.

Put an order in Nov, 2018 and was charged twice for the order. They shipped the original order, but will not refund for the double charge. Additionally, they would not return email, and don't answer their phone, so getting a resolution to their double charge has been pointless. Opened a credit dispute for the double charge, and they replied to the credit card that both were legitimate orders, but provide no tracking numbers to prove they shipped two orders. AVOID these thieves. They make no effort to rectify their errors, and online commerce seems to be how they find bonus money. As others have said, they double charge without conscience. read more

I ordered from here before and had no problems so I didn't think this time would be an issue. I ordered 5 wool blankets, got an order confirmation, they took my money and that was it. I haven't received my items, they won't answer emails and the phone is busy every time I call. Finally had to call my bank and dispute it. I even called the police department in Clyde to see if they are still open. They are but won't answer any calls or emails. Lesson learned. read more

Add me to the list of people being ripped off! Called again today and the number has been disconnected!

I've done business with Old Grouch for many years but this last time will be the last time. I was double charged for one item and charged for another item that has never been received. I have emailed them multiple times and received no reply and tried to call them for the past 2 weeks and got a busy signal every time. Seems they just take the phone off the hook so they don't have to deal with unsatisfied customers. I plan to take the drive and go see them in person with a local LEO with me. NC like my home state is a 'fighting words' state, and I'm sure ole Timmy boy's mouth will overload his ass when I get to talk to him. read more

This is a fraudulent dealer. Do not attempt to do business with them. Ordered a few items, never shipped. I've asked for a refund multiple times and have been ignored. "Tim" told me he had family problems and that he'd send items. It turns out this is a standard lie to take your money. If my order wasnt so small I'd be contacting their local law enforcement, as it appears taking orders and neither shipping the item or giving refunds is blatant theft. At best they take orders on items they do not have in stock and send the item whenever, which is fraudulent, at worst they're simply stealing money. read more

As others have stated; DO NOT do business with these people. I ordered a Ruck for $133.50 and a day later was charged AGAIN for $144.80. Right aways that's an unauthorized charge. I attempted to reach out to the business via their phone number 4 different days and each time the line was "busy". That's very sketchy. They have two different emails listed on their website (also odd). I emailed both addresses and about a week later I still haven't heard back from anyone. I just reported these charges as fraudulent to my credit card company and working on getting the credit back. Should have done my due diligence before buying; I learned my lesson. read more

THEY STOLE FROM A MEMBER OF THE MILITARY! I'm in the military and made a purchase from this store 2 months ago and still haven't received my order. I told them upfront I was military (because their site made it seem like they were "military friendly/supporters") and this apparently doesn't matter to them in the least. They do not respond to emails and the phone number they have listed is a fake. I called the number on 10 different days at different times. It's always busy (first thing in the morning, mid-morning, lunch time, after lunch, early evening, midnight....it's even busy at midnight!). I paid them $120 and it's clear they have NO intention of sending me my order...this is THEFT plain and simple. DO NOT BUY FROM HERE! read more

I bought some products from them but they never delivered it. I emailed but no response. The phone was always busy. Do not buy from them.

I placed an order online. It took them 90 days to ship. They have very high quality products but they obviously have trouble keeping up with demand. If you place an order, they will ship, but it will take a long time. read more

Twice in 2019 I attempted to order truck shackles after receiving promotional emails. The first time the item was never shipped. I disputed the charge. The second time I called the store ahead of time, confirmed they had them and that they will actually ship them this time. The person on the phone said something like "They've had some personnel issues and fired some people. We will ship them tomorrow." So again I ordered online, received nothing, and disputed the charge a month and a half later. They're good at billing your credit card, not so good at shipping your merchandise. read more

Well as I expected after deciding to look at Yelp and see what kind of reports people write on this ridiculous place. I only kick myself for not reviewing things first. I'm in Az and found this company on website back around May 6. Ordered a Rucksack from them. It is now June 14 and after placing several calls and getting told I will send you shipping info and even being told 2 weeks ago it's in the state now I have given up. Do yourself a favor and never buy from here. Not the kind of small town business America needs. No integrity and just a bunch of games. Don't just take my word for it look at the reviews dating back a year even. Sad part to me is there selling military gear. I think a month and a week is plenty of time to get a package or even a shipping notice. Shameful company. Do not shop here. read more

DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY ONLINE. I should have read the Yelp reviews before ordering from Old Grouch's website. I, too, was charged and never received the product I ordered. Not only was I charged for the order, two days later, Old Grouch charged me again for the same order. When that charge showed up on my credit card bill I tried calling them. Got an odd message from Verizon about their phone number in the multiple times I tried calling. I emailed them as well asking for an explanation for the double charge ($299!!). Crickets. I waited a week and then sent another email informing them I'd seek recourse through my credit card company. Bingo, email the next day from "Tim" saying they were having trouble with their email account and he would process my refund right away. You guessed it, no refund the next day. I called the credit card company and registered a complaint. Fast forward another 10 days and I called the credit card company to see why the refund hadn't been posted. I was told there was no response from Old Grouch on the double charge inquiry and the banking regulations time limit had not yet been hit. By now the hair on the back of my neck was standing up and I checked their Better Business Bureau account - a grade of "F" - and the Yelp reviews - people in the same spot as I am now with orders placed, cards charged, and no merchandise shipped. I'm currently out $598 and hoping the credit card company can claw back my hard-earned money. read more

Ordered 3 items from them in early January 2019. Never received the shipment. Called at the end of January and was told the demand was too high and they were waiting for a resupply of the knives. He promised to send them out that day. Called back 2 weeks later after not shipment received and was told the same runaround. Phone is perpetually busy. Finally got 2 of the items in at the end of February. Called Tim again to report the missing knives from the order and he promised to send me a tracking link and ship them that day. One month later, he doesn't answer multiple email requests for my merchandise. Phone is still busy. Having to dispute it again with the credit card company.
