a display of candy and candy bars

The only reason I'm not giving five stars is that if you need to use the restroom, they tell you the closest one is about a mile away at McDonald's. O.O My friend and I spent at least an hour here. An hour lol. There are all kinds of things you can't find anywhere else or haven't seen in years. Tons of candy, most of it nostalgic. I bought some wax bottles with the syrup in it for my sister and some cinnamon tooth picks for my brother. They had even more merchandise upstairs and most of their inventory was nice, not junky like plenty of other tourist-type shops. They had a section upstairs for 70% off; I couldn't believe how many items I bought for roughly $65. I bought a purse made from discarded military tents and a journal made from a recycled, custom license plate. I asked the staffer if this is indeed an old store... she thought so. The wooden floors were especially worn, and as another Yelper put it so well, this place "reeked of quaint."

The store is also connected to Country Pie Shoppe so we also picked up some baked goods.

It's a institution that has been around longer then I have, with regular customers who have patronized the place since its inception. The old building once was a carpet store, and a couple bought it and turned what its now Candyland and Farmer's Market. The store is a wonder being split down the middle, one side is devoted to fresh fruits and vegetables, while the other is candy (in monstrous amounts) devided up to be sold by the mixed bag pound, and there are about 100 different other candies besides, so if you can't find it, it may not exist. The are cheeses that are some of the best I have ever had and great prices for block cheese. The people who work there are as awesome as the place is itself. Ask them about anything in store they will pretty much know it inside and out. If not, they will go out of their way to help you. Come here, pure and simple. It's a great place where people from all over world have come and shopped here. I couldn't believe in the time I had worked there, that people no matter the race or religion could bond over candy. Michael Phelps even shopped here and as well as the PR guy for the Ravens all in one summer. You won't regret spending money here and even though I now work somewhere else I come here often, to get a taste of home.

The other half is a small grocery store with the basics including some produce, but not a whole lot of selection. It's adequate. There are two registers. For many years, I have shopped at this particular store when I am in the Strip District neighborhood. During my most recent visit, I saw candies such as caramels, gummies, jelly beans, Pez, lollipops, hard candies, freeze-dried candies, powdered candies, chocolate bars, bubblegums, and more--as well as other treats such as snack cakes and sodas. Prices are similar to what other stores charge. Online shopping is also available for shipping on the East Coast. I always enjoy looking at and eating the candies. Overall, Grandpa Joe's is a fun store for both children and adults who have sweet tooths.

Don't even get me started on how many types of Mountain Dew I've tried. While I was happy to find a Rocket Fizz in Pittsburgh, we had those in California too. Grandpa Joe's was new to me, and I dare say their stock was bigger? Candy of all varieties and eras, from M&Ms to pickle candies to Clark bars. Their soda game was on par with Rocket Fizz, though I couldn't find any Jones Nuka-Cola variants (they did have Jones but not what I was looking for). Plus they had a whole loft area dedicated to toys and games. I almost picked up the RuPaul's Drag Race version on the spot. Here's the real kicker: after the nice employee rang me out and put my purchases in a paper bag, I walked out and headed to the bus. When I got to my stop, though, that's when the hole in the bottom of the bag sent my root beer to its death all over 21st St. I really wanted that root beer though, so I walked back figuring they were just going to tell me "tough muffins." The guy though just let me pick up another one, no questions asked! I showed him the bag to prove I wasn't lying, and he discovered that all the bags on the counter had the same issue. He was super friendly to my anxiety-having ass, and definitely sealed the fifth star. I'm all about badass customer service. It makes a good place great and a great place extraordinary. The service was fast and friendly. We tried the viral Dubai strawberry cups. They pack the cup with strawberries and then drizzle the ingredients on the top. The small was the perfect size for one! The original shop in Greensburg is really cute with a large variety of old time candy, cute seating, and amazing milkshakes.
