London Inn - Small beer garden in the back.

    London Inn

The London Inn is a smaller community pub in the heart of Padstow, a few minutes walk from the…read moreharbour. The inside is split into several small rooms, evidence of the historic architecture of the building. The bar, too, is on the small side but offers a fair range of real ale ales and lagers, including a selection from St. Austell Brewery. To the back you'll find a small beer garden on an elevated wooden platform, clearly an afterthought. The stairs to the platform are very narrow and rather steep, which could be problematic for smaller children (a sign at the bottom of the stairs advises parents to take them by the hand). The whole construction has a somewhat appealingly cramped, intimate feel to it, an impression only reinforced by the proximity of adjacent buildings - the high wooden walls around the platform preclude nosey looks though. Neither the beer garden nor the pub itself are suitable for larger groups. Considering the many other options in close proximity to the London Inn, I'd say this is a nice, middle of the road choice, not especially a first one for beer lovers (You can get St. Austell brews practically everywhere in the neighbourhood). But it does have some charm. Beer prices are on the same, slightly elevated level that's characteristic for a touristy place like Padstow.

Therefore, I snapped up the London Inn when I found two rooms for £125 - one double and one twin. I was told on the telephone that this was the family room with both rooms sharing an interconnecting bathroom. However, on arrival we found that the double had the ensuite shower room, the twin was down the corridor with the chefs living accommodation in between, and the loo was separate from both rooms! A very strange set up and definitely as far from a 'Family room' as I could imagine! It wasn't too bad for us (four adults) but I'm not sure what an actual family would have made of it. The twin room was fairly small, so much so you couldn't open the door properly as one of the beds was in the way. It did have a tele and a sink though. The double room didn't lock properly, the tele was missing and the blind was broken! But then again, I guess you get what you pay for and I didn't have a bad nights sleep here - I thought it was going to be noisy, the rooms being directly over the bar, but after 10.30pm it was actually fairly quiet. The pub itself was quite nice - old fashioned and cosy. Not sure about the clientele - it was full of drunken skin heads on the night we stayed!! The breakfast was pretty good though, and certainly large. They were also very accommodating for our fussiness! The dinner menu looked good too although we didn't try anything on this occasion. If you want something cheap and cheerful, the London Inn will fit the bill. If you want something a little more smart and shiny - look elsewhere!

There's not even much of the rock quarry visible that gave the place its name. So IF you're heading to Rock, why not stop at this rather nice restaurant which offers brilliant views of the bay. The menu is split into three time schedules, breakfast, lunch (12 to 6 p.m.) and dinner (after 6). The range is a bit higher key than the usual pub grub, and the chicken breast (topped with bacon and cheese) I opted for was rather nice indeed. The beer range is limited, especially on the hand-pumps - similar to the Rock Road Bar & Grill which inhabits the same building - and they may indeed be one item. Korev and some international lagers are available though. The view is indeed splendid and the staff were really nice when I visited. The outside seating can be covered, but it was not on this rather warm and sunny June day. Since there are very few alternatives here, I'd give The Rock Inn thumbs up. There is truly no real reason to go to Rock in the first place, but this one might be it.

A must visit for all the family!
