The Old Colonial Inn is a charming restaurant perfect for a date night, special occasion, or just because! The restaurant is located in the town's restored old hotel right near the town square. Upon entering, there's delightfully cozy seating and a candlelit interior--we were seated in the library room that contained a few intimate tables. The service was amazing. Jill is attentive yet gave us space for conversation. She recommended the tenderloin special, which paired with the blueberry gastrique and parsnip purée was a nice mashup of flavors. The soup of the day was a rich, creamy lobster bisque. My husband ordered the salmon grilled and said it was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. We ordered a dessert to share (turtle cheesecake), and they thoughtfully plated it with a starburst of whipped cream for each of us! The owners came around and checked on everyone briefly. A very special dining experience. It reminds me of the old-fashioned dining experience. The restaurant is located in a small community on the downtown Square. Dining is seated in various rooms. Excellent service. Cool little bar. The menu is small though delightful. We enjoyed the salmon and prime rib, both excellent; fresh salads, and ppl who like mushrooms may like their only soup mushroom soup. We rather enjoy the Old Colonial Inn. It's about a 45 min drive for us but we try to go a few times a year. The ambiance is charming and cozy like an old school steak and chop house. It's been months since I've been back to one of my family's favorite restaurants. The Old Colonial Inn is open again for table service (and take out as well, which they have been doing since March). Mara and Michael graciously welcome diners back to the reopened restaurant. Staff is in place. Diners are appropriately spaced throughout the restaurant. Linen, china, silver, and stemware are all present. Hand sanitizer is available throughout the restaurant. Menus are single use. What a relief! All that said, let's focus on the fact that they are STILL producing wonderful food and drink in the most pleasant and welcoming of environments you could hope for. My partner and I started our meals off with expertly prepared cocktails. We then moved on to starters of the incredible mushroom soup and house salad. The wine arrived with plenty of time to breathe before our main courses appeared at the table. Blackened walleye pike with rice and filet mignon with roasted cauliflower. Everything was perfect. There was a full house of customers (especially given the reduced number of seats available). The staff was uber friendly. Took a risk and drove about an hour and a half to experience Old Colonial Inn on a Friday night. It was worth it -- several times over, actually. Atmosphere: classy, interesting, unique, but not stuffy. The space featured several smaller dining rooms, including a library setting. The bar seemed lively but was self contained and no noise permeated the main dining areas. Lots of historical photographs throughout and really a cool place for supper. Top-notch restoration and very elegant. Service: generally commensurate with the atmosphere. Each course was paced appropriately. The server knew the menu well and your order is delivered on a cart with domes over each plate. It adds a bit of old-school theatrics. Food: Prime Rib was the first item listed on the menu and I could smell it before I even entered the restaurant. This is the real deal. Served on a shallow plate with au jus, the prime rib alone was worth the drive. I think it was crusted with porcini powder and fresh cracked pepper. It was a beefy umami bomb and perfectly cooked to my liking. It was extremely satisfying. Others in my party ordered fish, such as the fried Walleyed Pike. It was a huge portion and had a wonderfully crisp coating. The clam chowder was also on point. A slice of triple layer Lemon Cake to share at the table was the perfect end to a fantastic meal. In summary, Old Colonial Inn deserves five stars across the board. The ambiance was really cool, service was attentive and friendly, and everything we ordered exceeded our (high) expectations. I don't like writing Yelp reviews, but this place really took me by surprise. I was holding an event at the Old Colonial and I forgot to bring my hdmi cord for the projector. The owner of the restaraunt personally helped me and even took me to his off site office to get his own projector and laptop to make sure my event went smoothly. Never in my life have I ever experienced this level of customer service. Any future events or holdings will be at this restaraunt because of the fantastic food AND level of service. Wow ! What a hidden treasure. The "New" Old Colonial Inn is back in business, Bigger, Better and Classier than before. The menu has all the old standards, the food quality is top-notch, and the service is great. Went there for Mother's Day and have to say, the Prime Rib was excellent. Folks in my party really enjoyed the chicken, seafood, and pork dishes and accompaniments. The wine list and craft beer and drink selection menu offers a variety of top-shelf brands. Try the Bloody Mary. The completely remodeled interior and exterior kept the flair of a late 1800's restaurant/hotel era building. Nicely appointed with Artwork throughout, and a lovely Library dining room that really adds to the ambiance. We met the owners who are local business people who said they took there time to get the building, food and staff just right before re-launching this landmark restaurant. Mission Accomplished ! Three friends and I went to celebrate my birthday. I grew up in Kentland, and had many memories around the Colonial Inn and I was very happy to see that the renovation did it proud! It is beautiful and well worth the drive of 45 minutes. The ambiance is lovely; the service impeccable, and the food absolutely delicious. Everyone enjoyed their meals. I had the salmon and I have never had better. It was perfectly cooked. The vegetable and salad were very good too. The menu is well thought out and there is something for everyone. Main thought: mediocre and overpriced. We ordered "Cajun Pistolettas" for appetizers. They were cute, but pricey at $4 for ONE. Couldn't guess what was "Cajun" about them...tasted like chicken pot pie filling in a dinner roll, lightly fried. Salad was okay; soup was strange: a very nice broth, but with cheap, canned mixed veggies in it. Expected more for the $22 (mine) and $18 (his) entree prices! Hubby ordered tuna steak with green beans amandine. He stated that it was "okay", but that tuna did not taste very fresh. I ordered, excitedly, the "stuffed" catfish fillet with crab and shrimp sauce and a baked potato. It came on a "sizzle plate", the plastic tray with the aluminum plate inside...and the potato came, still wrapped in foil. Seemed VERY out of place...My catfish tasted quite strong and was COATED with spicy Cajun-type seasoning, overly intense for the shrimp/crab accompaniment. The shrimp were the salad kind, as well, and rubbery. Basically, it was like a crab cake, served on top of the fish, with a stringy, salad-shrimped light gravy overtop. I was disappointed. I was also initially excited to see that they had a pumpkin brulee offered for dessert and we ordered it. It was runny (as brulees can be, if not carefully done) and I gave it to Hubby, concentrating instead on my coffee, which was surprisingly good. Overall, it seemed that the chef concentrated overly on making the menu SOUND appetizing, but did not apply the same effort to choosing quality of food, careful cooking, or presentation. They pride themselves on home-made salad dressings, but I would have traded my over-sweet French dressing for real veggies in the soup, in a heartbeat. Our server, Mary Jo, was the high point of the meal. She was sincere and well-meaning and took very good care of us. I strongly felt that this restaurant was an effort to be more than the staff were able to support...maybe they should concentrate on more family-friendly fare and lower prices and let a more laid-back part of their business personality shine? Our initial expectation upon entry was a cozy meal, with a lit fireplace and a window seat, nicely set table, decent beer and wine...but the food just didn't match the rest. We found the review for colonial inn and decided to stop by. It was Saturday night and they were very busy. We got a table immediately and ordered drinks and ribeye steak and prime rib. Everything was delicious, served well and hot. The champaign salad dressing was especially good as were the candied sweet potatoes. This is not an inexpensive place to eat but well worth the money. The Colonial Inn is a real gem of a fine dining restaurant located in Kentland Indiana. They have great cocktails, excellent steaks, prime rib, and seafood and luscious desserts. It is hard to find a better venue for great night out. The place is comparable to any fine dining restaurant in Chicago or Indianapolis.
