We navigated road construction in the rain. Some tourists showed up from Texas. They mistook us for locals. (We had never been to Cawker City.) We would have loved to have stayed to find out what they wanted, but we had people waiting on us in McPherson, Kansas. So on we went. We could have parallel parked but instead, we opted in the rental van to continue on our way.

Odin, one of the Dala horses, is a brown and gold figure that, according to the Wild Dalas of Lindsborg Official Guide, represents "the intricate tapestry of Norse beliefs, where courage and destiny are intertwined. Odin's leadership and the Valkyries' duty ensure the finest warriors are ready to defend the cosmos when the final reckoning comes." Wow! I'm not exactly sure what all that means, but it sounds a little more aggressive than what I want to deal with right now, frankly. Looking at this Dala horse, Odin, I don't sense all of that aggressiveness. Odin seems like a nice little Dala horse, to me. BTW: Odin was designed by an artist named Riley Ahlstedt.

For food we had the artichoke bruschetta for an appetizer (very different than normal bruschetta but flavorful). We also had the arugula salad which I thought was really good! For entree, I ordered the stuffed chicken and was pleased and satisfied with the flavors. It could have come out a bit hotter, but was still good. My boyfriend ordered the ribeye, which was a pretty good size and said he thoroughly enjoyed! And for dessert, we had the cheesecake which was homemade and very delicious. Hilarious. You could actually spend a lot of time here, especially inside, looking at all the "found" objects that make up the walls. The art in the grass is pretty funny as well. American Fork Art. LOL!!! The bathroom seemed clean enough but it definitely smells like a public restroom. I didn't use the facilities except to wash my hands and that was a bit of a struggle as the faucet is about half an inch away from the sink bowl. Very odd but again, not going to complain about a free service.

There's really nothing else nearby in Kansas, but a few notable attractions upward in Nebraska. A roadside pullout off US 36 has a historical marker that talks about the Geographical Center of the United States. Oh and one other thing- the Boss, or Bruce Springsteen, was here at one time. My friend and I decided to do a tasting and were able to try 5-6 different types of wine. A lot of wines were in the dryer side. Lucas, KS is the northern end of the Post Rock Scenic Byway that starts in Wilson (about 2 miles…read moresouth of I-70 and runs about 20 north to Lucas along KS-232. Lucas is an interesting little town with a number of sites worth seeing. For example, the Garden of Eden (a really quirky place), the world's best beautiful restrooms (you gotta see them to believe them) and more. It's well worth an 18 mile detour from I-70 and is a good break when driving across Kansas.
