My previous seamstress had moved out of the GVRD and I was a bit cautious about trusting my "Audrey Hepburn Special" to just anyone. After all, I had sourced designer quality, eco-friendly materials for it back when you couldn't just run down to your local fabric store to get them. Her website was well laid out and pictures detailed. She has a long history working in different sectors of the sewing industry prior to freelancing (Danier Leather, the bridal industry, etc.), so I figured she was my best lead. I left a brief message and my contact info on her website; she called me within 48hours, which was pretty good! I told her I needed my dress altered for a Christmas party. And that there was one more issue: I don't drive, so fittings would have to be done either after my DH got off work, or someplace easily accessible by transit. In those days, we met out at her mom's apartment, which is about 30 minutes away from me via bus. I found both ladies warm and hospitable. In the great Humphrey Bogart's words, "it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship." Now I hear you saying, "So what about the friendship, how does she sew?" Well, I've worked with many a seamstress, but Sophia's work surpasses theirs. She's an artist, the real deal. Audrey Hepburn and I could never wear the same size dress: you could fit four of her into one of mine! When I brought Sophia my LBD -- actually more of a BBD, since I'm plus sized -- it had been competently sewn from designer fabrics but I had no idea it could be better. After a few fittings, she had taken it in along the sides and in the back and whaddayaknow, I had curves again! It was a revelation. Next she sewed a black silk tap and cami set to coordinate with an existing pair of long bottoms, so I could switch to the tap pants in hot weather. It was a more complicated project as the top had a Battenberg lace applique where the back and shoulders should be. The finished set is a marvel: an invisible zipper in a fitted cami that's a zip to get in and out of, and graduated taps that accentuated my long legs. Supah! Then I had her design a swim skirt to match a retro top I had purchased from a popular retail brand. The top was a red bra with boning and I wanted a black skirt with a red stripe on the hem. What I hadn't counted on was that the bottom cleverly disguises my pot belly! Wahoo! Now she's getting an embroidered vest ready for another Christmas party -- a gorgeous midnight vest with white cherry blossoms with red centres, and a red silk duchesse satin lining to match. And again, Sophia has worked her magic fitting, so I have a waist and butt and defined bust. I can't wait to wear it! I'm sold on Sophia. If you have a special outfit that needs a real professional's touch, looking for a seamstress for some "investment dressing", or if you're have trouble finding off-the-rack that fits, go see Sophia. She keeps all your patterns and measurements on file for future projects. She's friendly, flexible and professional. Her rates (cash or e-transfer) are surprisingly reasonable, given her experience and expertise. Why go anywhere else? She's the best.

Awesome alterations done here - such a professional job! Val did way better than I ever expected!…read moreDaughter was so happy with the end result! Came all the way from out of town - 4 hours drive to get the alterations done here BUT IT WAS SO WORTH IT!! So glad we got the work done here! I trusted Val to work on my daughters fancy grad designer dress - the ones that cost a lot & you have to be sure you put the work into good hands. Val has so much experience working on fancy dresses that you know she's going to do it right the first time! She did awesome work! Val has such awesome attention to details - it's all the little things that count and make such a big difference in the end result! No cutting corners! She really cares about your dress & puts her heart & soul in it. Blown away by the workmanship & dedication to excellence. The dress looks so good on my daughter now because she made it fit perfectly on her with the alterations. Grad dress: by a designer label dress so you really need someone who knows what they're doing so you don't end up with mistakes on your dress! Well, Val sure has tons of experience working on all those fancy dresses and it turned out awesome! My daughter was so pleased! Alterations done: Shoulder straps had to get taken in/shortened by an inch. You can't even tell it the straps were altered because she did such a nice sewing job. The hem was shortened about 1.5" - perfect stitching/hem work- big poofy dress with the crinolin etc. and it was no problem for her! Bodice work-got the front of the dress looking so good - it fits her so well now because Val has so many sewing hacks & made the dress fit her body like a glove! Perfect fit! Inserted an extra layer of mesh in the current mesh panel in the very front of the dress & made it look modest - and you can't even tell she did it in the sense that the seams are so nice & clean; no puckering or anything like that. Such beautiful work on the very front of the dress! Trusted her to work on the delicate areas! She did a perfect job the 1st time around! Back clip by zipper area needed readjusting because when they made it, it wasn't aligned properly - but Val fixed it up no problems & now it doesn't pull the dress from the side/got rid of the tug in the dress! Val has so much experience working on fancy dresses that it felt good leaving the dress in her hands/care because you know she loves what she does. I would definitely come back here should I need any more alterations! Absolutely recommend Val's Alterations - skill can't be beat! And she accommodates your personal needs and makes it to how you want it! Thank you so much, Val! God bless you!

I brought in a pair of new with tags crop pants for a simple hem. These didn't come in petite so I…read moreneeded them to be shortened. The length, post alteration, is even and correct. The stitching on the other hand is not. Stitches are missing/broken/overlapped and sloppy throughout both hems. In addition, they used a hot iron on these poly/spandex work pants and now there are permanent shiny burns on my brand new pants. Now, I am going to take some responsibility here as I had even stated to a coworker that I had other alterations/repairs that needed to be done - with clothing that was older and that I should get one of those repaired/altered first in case I wasn't happy with the quality. Unfortunately I got impatient. I also took the bag without looking at my pants before leaving as I was rushing back to work. Thankfully it is on a hem and nobody is going to be looking at it - but considering they were brand new, it's still super disappointing. The customer service was meh. Flat, uninviting and disorganized. Odd for a brand new (to the mall) business. They were completely disorganized when I went to pick up my pants. The woman had to go through every bag before finding my pants - kept pulling out blue jeans and asking if these were mine even though I kept telling her that mine were dress pants. There were tags on every bag with clients names and phone numbers - she wasn't checking these. This business has some growing pains in some regards (organization/customer service) but ultimately the quality of the alteration was terrible. When pants were given to me there was no acknowledgment that there were any issues or discussion around solutions. That alone would have redeemed this situation. There isn't a person or business in existence that hasn't made an error - but if there isn't ownership or acknowledgment of a known obvious issue- then it is simply neglectful poor quality customer service. I'm giving a 2 because the pants length was straight(ish - poly can be difficult to work with - full acknowledgement of this, but this is a storefront which implies professional workmanship) and accurate and the alteration was completed in the timeline they provided. Received a text when they were completed - which is a bonus for busy folk. That said, I will find another seamstress next time or do it myself. (Images showing workmanship - all same pants, just depending on light and angle/how close up I was to the pants - burn marks hard to see due to lighting - bottom right on quad photo is an example of the damage from hot iron)
