Medium sized TKG (Tamago Kake Gohan) eggs. Special $20 for two trays.

A scenic drive along the South Shore will bring you to Waimanalo Country. A laid back, tight knit community of great people. Tucked up in the back roads is OK Poultry, a country store which sells fresh TKG (Tamago Kake Gohan) eggs. Many have seen the viral TKG from Japan. The eggs from this place are much better when poured over hot rice with shoyu. Totally different flavor in the traditional Japanese sense. The yolk is a dark orange and the whites are clear. The store is a mini museum of old items from O'ahu's past. Usually open only on Wed/Sat 7:30 am till sold out. Go see Sharon on Wednesdays, she's a sweetheart. Aloha.

Location: 41-656 Kakaina St in Waimanalo Hours: They are open Saturday & Wednesday 0730 to 1300 or until sold out. Price: I was told there is no difference in nutrition and taste between the brown and white eggs. I've purchased both and was not able to tell the difference. The brown eggs cost $1-$2 more because those birds don't lay as much eggs and cost a little more for feed. Eggs are size small to jumbo and cost $10 up to $17 per tray depending on color and size. Each tray has 30 eggs. Taste: My family eats a lot of eggs and so I have been to many egg farms. These are by far the most fresh and tastiest eggs hand down. They are somewhat more creamy and very fluffy when scrambled. They are well known for their Waimana TKG eggs. TKG stands for tamago kake gohan which is a popular Japanese breakfast dish. It's simply a raw egg over hot rice and usually topped with soy sauce. The medium size eggs are perfect for this because they have a nice yolk/egg white ratio. Eggs can be eaten TKG style (raw) for up to 21 days and will keep well in the refrigerator for up to 45 days. Service: They are always very friendly but if I am being honest, not always efficient. When they have two people working the line it runs smooth and quick but sometimes they have just one person and it takes a while. On my most recent visit, there was just one worker. I stood in line for 1 hour and 15 mins and they ran out by the time I got to the front of the line. That was partly my fault because I didn't get there until about 1000. With that being said, go early!! Tips: The also sell fresh fruits and vegetables.

When I first started coming here, there were only a few 5 star reviews. My friend introduced be to this place and I've been coming back ever since. I could come here any day they were open in the afternoon and get what I wanted back then. The word is out and that is no longer the case! It's awesome that others can taste their delicious TKG eggs and I'm happy for the farm to get more business. Recently, they have been selling out often so make sure to call before going down. On a Wednesday morning I called around 9ish and they were already sold out!! No one picked up that morning when I first called and I called about 3-4 times. They were that busy! When I finally got someone on the phone, they immediately told me they were sold out. Sad but I'll have to try again earlier! This place is worth the journey because their eggs are so amazing. You'll be able to tell the difference in quality once your crack open the eggs by the color of the yolk. The yolk is a beautiful orange color and when fresh, these eggs can be eaten raw. I wasn't a huge fan of just a raw egg but cracking it over some warm Japanese rice was delicious. Definitely check them out and a huge plus is you're going to be supporting a local farm!

What a terrific place to pick up fresh, free-range chicken eggs. The yolks are extremely bright orange as they should be. Definitely not that crap you get at Costco or Sam's club. Prices are very reasonable. Go early, they open at 7:30 and there's a line outside already. Sundays are less crowded after 8 AM. There are times, the larger eggs are sold out very early. However, even the middle size eggs are very large in my opinion. Cash only.

    Line on Saturday at 7:55am.

Do you like fresh eggs so fresh you can eat them raw? Into Japan TKG Tamago Kake Gohan (raw eggs over hot rice)? Don't mind getting B-grade (essentially less than perfectly shaped) eggs? Love eggs with dark orange yolks? You have found heaven at OK Poultry...or so you would think. The secret to obtaining a high quality fresh product only requires a few simple steps. First, wake your butt up early on in the morning and head out to Waimanalo. Get there when they open at 7:30am to find a line already 150 people deep. Next practice your Japanese because half the Japanese expat community is there and making small talk with the people in front and back of you is easier in their language. Lastly, stand in line for two hours to find out that the large and XL eggs are sold out. Settle for the medium and small because they taste just as good. Or you could just go to Nijiya Market or Don Quijote in Town, pay twice as much for the super fresh A grade retail version but not lose two hours of your life in the hot sun sweating so much you take another shower when you get home. My wife who is currently laid off loves the wait to get a bargain. Her employed husband working 12 hour days will be picking them up at the grocery store next time.

Okay, OK ... Poultry, that is. Normally when FPO and I want fresh, home grown, local eggs we have to plan a field trip out to Wahiawa and Peterson's Upland Farm, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just far. But the other week we were meeting some friends at Vino in Restaurant Row. Is it still called Restaurant Row? Doesn't matter. Anyway, we were at Vino and had the Smoked Pork Belly. The pork belly was overdone and dry but it was served with a sunny side up egg that was so rich and visually appealing we thought it was Peterson's. Imagine our surprise when we were told, no. Not Peterson's. The egg was from another farm called OK Poultry in Waimanalo. Winner, winner no chicken dinner. Need to keep the chickens alive for the fresh eggs. This time our egg hunt took FPO and I in the opposite direction. We drove through Waimanalo in search of our second chicken farm. Because we'd never been we used the Yelp app to open Maps and followed the instructions. As it turns out, the instructions take you on the scenic route, through some residential areas to get to OK Poultry when you're approaching from the Honolulu side. Located on Kakaina Street, it's on the left-hand side of the road and even though there's a handy (and fairly large) sign, it's easy enough to miss the first time you visit. It could happen to anyone ... FPO. If you see Geobunga, which is further down the same street, you need to turn around. It's a small driveway with a small area in the front of the property for parking. Maybe ten cars? Their shop is on the left side of the property as you enter, and they have a truly cool display of nostalgic items including an old-time jukebox, an array of (we'll call them classic) typewriters, cash registers, cameras, and telephones. And various other interesting items that remind you of the good old days. Open Wednesday through Sunday from 7:30 in the morning until 1:00 in the afternoon - or until they run out, whichever comes first OK has white and brown eggs and the prices range from $4/dozen for cracked eggs up to $12/dozen for Jumbos. And, just like with Peterson's you can tell the eggs are fresh because they have that same richness and depth to them that grocery store bought eggs don't. It's really nice to know that we no longer have to drive all the way out to Wahiawa for fresh eggs. Not to say we won't on occasion (for old time's sake) because Peterson's is great too and Wahiawa has Barrio Café but it's just nice to know that Waimanalo also has an egg farm with nice people, really fresh eggs, and the opportunity to support the local economy.

Really ono eggs. Bit on the producer side than the local super market. But they have quality eggs and pay for what you get. Would recommend.

It was tidy and set-up nicely. It had one very large arena for lessons and jumping events, and another medium sized arena that was well kept. Judy Woods is the Trainer and Instructor that I spoke with and was able to observe a couple of her lessons, and was very happy to see the diversity of her horsemanship. It was enjoyable to see her students bond and work well with a lesson horse. Most of the horses are privately owed, but Ms. Woods herself has a few fine horses that she teaches lessons on. The stable itself was very clean and well kept. Most owners appeared responsible for making sure their horses were looked after and cared for by private hands. Even so, I would highly recommend this stable to anyone who is looking to board their horse, or to someone who is just looking to work on their horsemanship in any discipline: Western, English or Dressage.

Okay so, my son and I came out here yesterday for the Dita Holifield's All American Rodeo. Look, I've lived on Oahu for 7 years and only recently heard about this! I've never been to a rodeo before, but I will definitely be making this an annual family tradition ;) My son (age 5) and I had so much fun. The events take place over three days, but I chose Saturday evening (the last day) because it worked with my schedule. Gates opened at 5, but we showed up 7 when the events started. Honestly, I wish I had showed up at 5 so that we could have walked around while there was still daylight. There were events for the kids, but since we arrived at 7, we went straight to the stands. I felt my son didn't really get to enjoy the entire event like he could have. Lesson learned. This event was packed, and lasted approx 2.5 hours. I love that it's located in Waimanalo...AWAY from town. I live in Honolulu, so this was a nice change of scenery. Yes, there are a lot of people who attend this event, but parking wasn't bad. They have police and staff guiding the way, so parking was quick. Surprising, cuz parking always sucks in town. Okay, keep in mind this was my FIRST rodeo. The only expectations I had were: Beer, food, horses, bulls and fine looking cowboys. Welp, they delivered on that! Don't ask me about the specifics of the events because I'm totally clueless on points, level of expertise, and what should be happening. I just went to have a good time. However, the last event was my favorite: Cowboy Hula. I believe there were 6 competitors who signed up for this crazy ass event. No they didn't dance hula. These 6 competitors are given a hula hoop and must stand, or squat, in the middle of the hoop. The object is to STAY IN THE HOOP! If you run out of the hoop, or the bull knocks you out of the hoop, you're out! lol It's like musical chairs, but with bulls. I'd come back just for that! Fun to see who the last man standing is gonna be. The winner this year was a woman, I believe she might have been from Georgia. So overall, they get 5 stars from me. This will have to be updated next year when I experience more of the attractions for the kids, food, etc. Again, I arrived later. We aren't rodeo people, but after seeing those fine looking cowboys, a girl might have to learn, up and relocate to Waimanalo..ya feel me ;)

I usually hate going to big events because parking is always a hassle and I tend to get lost in the shuffle. But New Town & Country Stables does an excellent job with managing traffic, in and out of their huge parking lot-even to cross traffic and turn left onto Kalanianaole Highway! And never mind the large crowd. I felt like I was walking into my auntie's house instead of sea of rodeo groupies. Everybody-from the parking attendees to the ticket booth workers to the food vendors-greeted us with warm smiles, offered to take pictures of us, gave my kids gifts, and even fed us bites of fresh sweet funnel cake. The show is loads of fun and guaranteed to keep you at the edge of your seat cheering and rooting for cowboys you don't even know. But the daytime shows are long and HOT with no shade. I suggest you bring a blanket or pad for the butt scalding cement seats, an umbrella for shade, and get yourself some refreshing 'Nalo Made Lemonade. And when that doesn't work...take cover in the stables and cuddle up with a bunnies, feed the goats, pretend to be a cowboy and go for a ride, or relax on miniature horse drawn carriage ride. I attended The All American Rodeo last year and this year and definitely will be there next year! If you can't wait that long there is a Stars-and-Stripes Ranch Sorting event on July 2, 2016 http://thecowboycalendar.com/venue/new-town-country-stables/ that is open and FREE to spectators. I have absolutely no clue what it's about...but cowboys, cowboys, and cowboys! Need I say more???
