Totally worth the short, scenic drive! So close to Hilo town! A beautiful working farm- and lovely curated items from crafts, to chocolates, coffee and home-grown fruits. I brought some chocolate home and it is the most amazing chocolate! Also got some fresh fruits we ate while on the island. Wish I had one of those caviar limes right now!! We stopped at this gift store on the way back from the chocolate farm. The gift shop features their own macadamia nuts that they grow on their 700+ acre farm. (The nuts are processed off site). I bought some and they were delicious. The owner was super friendly. It is worth a stop if you are in the area. read more

The yummiest dried bananas that are a healthy snack our daughter loves; Hilo coffee (superior in taste to Kona!); fresh fruit, for Hilo residents, affordable and full CSA weekly produce boxes and our favorite Kai(n) locally made pasta and Hiro's cookies. We just stopped by to buy some lavender. There was lychee to buy outside and we didn't know we weren't supposed to touch it. I understand about covid restrictions. A worker who looked of Hawaiian descent came out and said in an aggressive rude tone, "Can you pick out all the ones you touched and take it with you..They are for customers to buy and a saw you touching them all." SMH. To that person, remember the Aloha spirit. You can say it nicely. It's sad that the Aloha spirit is fading. The tourists sustain your business. Besides stuffing my face with Two Ladies Kitchen mochi and the kalbi fries from Hilo Bay Café, our visit to OK Farms was my favorite thing to do during a Hilo day trip. OK Farms is located just above downtown Hilo and is home to high-quality tree crops such as coffee, macadamia nuts, cacao, hearts of palm, and a wide variety of citrus, tropical fruits and spices. We met up with Troy Keolanui, the K of OK Farms, for the farm tour which gave us exclusive access to the farm and waterfalls. We drove along their spice road where Troy broke off branches of the spice trees for us to smell. Don't laugh, but this city girl was pretty amazed how wonderful the cinnamon smell was from the inner bark of the tree. I had never seen any of the spices in their true form so it was very educational for me. We drove around the 1000-acre-plus farm and stopped to look at their cacao, macadamia nut, lychee, longan, and rambutan crops. It was very interesting to learn about their farmlands and the highlight for me was trying my first rambutan right off the tree! The farm also offers amazing views of Rainbow Falls and Ka'imu'kanaka Falls. After the fun tour we stopped at their gift shop and sampled their delicious chocolate covered macadamia nuts and picked up some souvenirs for home. The cost of the tour is $30 per person (children 12 and under are free) and offers a unique experience for the whole family! read more

My family and I had stopped by here as we were driving around the island and I can't recommend it enough!! All of the staff was incredibly kind and helpful regarding all of our questions. They had spoken with us about the coffee, their fruit, and gave us amazing suggestions of other things to do/eat on this side of the island. They even have tours of their farms as well! 1000/10 I'm definitely coming back here the next time I'm on the island. read more

The family and I took a day trip out to Hilo from Kona (1.5 Hour Drive in each direction). I'll admit it was a bit of a trek just to see a farm, but this isn't just any farm and I'd definitely say that this was one of the biggest highlights we had on our trip for sure. I traded e-mails with Ala for a few months before we made our trip over and she was great at accommodating us and our group of 11 people. She took us around the farm and walked us through the farm's philosophy, origins and goals. We tried new fruit and experienced old things in a new way. My daughter had a blast and we got some great pictures along the way. We saw a beautiful waterfall and took in some great sights. I can't recommend coming out to this farm enough. The staff are great and it definitely was a worthwhile experience. The drive there was an experience (We drove through a cloud!) and was pretty easy. Just book the entire day if you plan to do what we did. read more

Wonderful adventure just outside of Hilo. Learned about and tasted local fruits and nuts. Favorite part was spice row - who knew nutmeg was from a tree that big or how cinnamon was really harvested? This farm tour is fantastic. Tropical fruits growing include mangosteen, lychee, longan, and rambutan. There are also macadamia nuts and cacao. Many of these will be available for tasting. Not widely advertised, the tour at OK farms was the highlight of our trip to Hilo. Not able to make reservations, our group of 8 took a chance and drove there anyway. We were welcomed with open arms and our tour was immediately set up with our extremely knowledgeable and friendly guide Mel. She escorted us around the property and we tasted the many goods of the farm. We saw two beautiful water falls and snacked on white pineapple and other local grown fruits as well as macadamia nuts which are not native to Hawaii. Mel really made the tour for us special and I would highly recommend this excursion. Mahalo! read more

We specifically went to Hilo to go to a tour of the OK farms just based on the great reviews. We we sooo glad that we did! Our guide was Joy, and she spent 2 hours with us giving us a tour of the farm and explaining to us Hawaii farming and agriculture. We learned a lot from her and a lot about the various fruits, nuts, spices, coffee and other trees that we had been seeing. It was so worth our time, money and we would highly recommend this trip to anyone staying on the big island. It was probably in our top 3 things that we enjoyed. read more

I read wonderful reviews about this place and really wanted to go there when I visited Big Island. However it seems like they are so popular they can't be bothered with returning phone calls or email messages or attending to any queries from interested customers. I left at least six telephone messages for them before I left on my trip, asking about tour details and timings. No response whatsoever!! After I landed in Hilo I called them multiple times since I was a solo traveler and the online portal wouldn't let me book a tour for a single customer. No one called me back to respond to my multiple inquiries. When someone finally picked up the phone they told me that I could send an email to admin@hawaii-eco.com and that they would get back to me. I am still waiting for that response!! I even used the contact form on their website to check on tour days and timings. NOTHING!! I specifically asked the lady on the phone about tours on Monday, June 14th and was told they were operating as usual. I was driving from Volcano to Waipio and took an out-of-the-way detour to check this place out and take the 11 am tour if they had a slot. The GPS sent me to a gate that was closed and had a "private road, no trespassing" sign. After going around in circles for a while I was told that it was in fact the entrance to the farm and I just had to "push the gate open". When I finally made it to the farm, I was told by the lady at the front that they were not having tours that day since the FDA was there for inspections. I let her know that I had specifically asked about Monday tours and she said that the lady who answered my question probably didn't know about the FDA's inspection, and wasnt too inclined to listen to me beyond that. When I told her that the gate to the farm was closed she said that it was opened only on Tuesdays. What does that even mean given that there are tours on other days of the week? Nowhere on their website do they mention that you will come to a closed gate that you then have to push open, even though it's specifically prohibits trespassing. I took a one hour detour on a busy sightseeing day for nothing!! I understand that they are a working farm but it is absolutely unacceptable that they don't bother responding back to any telephone messages or emails. Not sure if this is because their tours are considered so good that they know people will show up anyway. I was very disappointed in the utter lack of responses even after multiple inquiries. Their tours may be absolutely aswesome but their business etiquette and customer service absolutely sucks:( read more

This farm is one of the highlights of our trip. We got to see the vast grounds with many different varieties of plants. Oh and waterfalls too! Our favorites were the rambutan, longan, and mac nuts. The owner was very kind and generous. She spent time explaining, answering questions, and was very generous with the fruits she cut down for us. We had so much fruit to enjoy for the rest of our trip! Also, make sure you try the honey. We loved it! read more
