Poi Coconut Butter, Tully's Hawaiian Coffee, original art by Veralyn Villanueva and cup from VNP

I am back home on mainland, sitting on my back deck, watching the blue birds build another nest and drink my coffee with an added spoon of poi coconut butter. Thanks Jim for the suggestion of a great way to add this super food to my morning routine and thanks Steve for your delicious products and recipes. When friends ask what my favorite thing I did on this last trip I said going to the farmers markets. Since I've been visiting BI for 30 years it's like coming home. Mahalo nui loa. Till we meet again. Aloha. L

Spaces were full when I arrived so I parked across the street in the lot for the park. Very casual place with small menu. There is a gift shop type area for local purchases and a fruit stand on site. I ordered a smoothie and pork tacos from the menu. Tacos were good. Smoothie was refreshing. Menu selection is small but with a decent amount of variety. I would recommend for a quick bite or a smoothie stop.

The menu might be small, but it packs serious flavor. The Ono sandwich was, well, *ono*! Perfectly cooked protein, fresh veggies, and a tangy sauce that brought it all together -- simple, fresh, and unforgettable. And don't even get me started on the Kalua pork tacos -- tender, smoky, and paired with just the right amount fresh tomatoes. The setting was relaxed and rustic, with just the right amount of charm. We grabbed a shaded table outside and enjoyed our food while soaking in the peaceful surroundings. It felt like we'd discovered a local secret. If you're in the area sightseeing or taking in waterfalls, do yourself a favor and stop by. Great food, and a perfect slice of island life. This place is a true treasure! If you're wondering: "Locavore" is a person whose diet consists only or principally of locally grown or produced food. Add a bunch of uniques gift ideas by Big Island artists and life is complete. Located in the heart of old town Hilo on Kilauea Avenue is where you'll find Locavore or as locals will know it's next to Ben Franklin. The staff of Sam and Audrey were genuinely kind and welcoming. I was most impressed with their knowledge of products and pride in what they had to offer. My sister (who I was visiting) purchased fresh non-GMO produce and pickled namasu. Since I was visiting Hilo I chose unique stickers and postcards to take home with me. I really felt a warm peaceful vibe while browsing around The Locavore Store. On a Sunday afternoon it was filled with curious customers. Health conscience hippies, those looking for island arts & crafts, and a few locals living la viva Locavore lifestyle. What a fab gem in old town Hilo. Til next time... Pls follow my adventures IG: @eric_travel_guru
