I loooove love love poke bowls ever since I tried them in the States ! Sadly have to admit that…read moreBrisbane has not caught on the poke bowl trend just yet as we have limited franchises that sell it :( But its all good, Suki has us covered for now. Suki is a cute restaurant on the Southbank strip that sells ramen, poke bowls and sushi burritos. You can either pick made up favorites or you can customize your own. I love how they are a place that provides healthy drinks other than soda ! They have coconut water, organic cola, different flavours of kombucha, and juices as well. I chose the regular size ($14.90) #3 poke bowl which had raw salmon, tuna and kingfish with the extra fish, surimi crab, seaweed salad ($1 each for extras $3.90 for double meat), with veggies, togarashi mayo and my base was quinoa and kale. So my bowl with the extras totaled to $20. Sadly, I've never had to pay that much for a poke bowl in America. Everything was pretty yummy, but I wasn't really a fan of the quinoa. I found it way too over cooked and mushy...it tastes like eating grits or oatmeal, but the kale was good. Hopefully it was a one time thing with the quinoa. Staff were friendly, atmosphere was upbeat and they had good seating available. TIP: if your eating in, they give you normal plates & bowls, & if you are making it take away, they place it in a plastic bowl/container. Ask for a carry bag if you need one. Make sure you see what veggies/salads/toppings the staff our including in your order, because some cost extra and some are included (cilantro and chili are free extras) I wish this was closer to Southside because the only locations I know of are Southbank and Balmoral...Because I know Suki is a great option for a healthy take out meal!

Especially with all the bright colour changing display on the outside, it really is hard to miss! There are two sections to the place. A dark ramen section and a bright sushi/burrito style bar on the other. They also have Poké bowls. I obviously went for the Ramen one. The eating area has some booths and some outdoor seating. They have a vegetarian ramen too but even though I really wanted to try the vegetarian option, I felt that I could not understand why the vegetarian one was 2 dollars more than the Chicken and I really have been waiting to go to Taro's ramen for that! So I ended up ordering the vegetarian gyoza and the Shio chicken. I could not really eat the gyoza, since there were pools of oil collected in all the ridges almost like it was deep fried. It did say pan fried on the menu but I felt it was an excessive amount even on the inside of the gyoza. I was not sure what the filling is because the oil flavour was a bit overwhelming but It was mainly orange so I am guessing a carrot base or sweet potato? Disclaimer: I am not a ramen expert but I have had some great ramen in the past from Bone Daddies, Shoryu Ramen and Kanada-ya in London. The ramen was presented well enough (by the way- the worst ramen I have had in Brisbane was at Harajuku Gyoza, nice gyoza-terrible ramen). The stock was pretty good but I could not drink any of it since it was much too salty for my palette. The egg was small and did not seem to be marinated so the flavour was lacking. There was an ample quantity of chicken in the soup and a generous serving of bamboo root (which I love). The noodles were satisfying and a definite improvement to Hai Hai which I tried not too long ago. All in all, I wouldn't say it was amazing but it surely filling and satisfying for a hungry tummy craving something soupy and warm in cooler weather. I rated this 3 star because I have not yet tried the other section and is only based on my ramen and gyoza experience.

It's my favourite sushi haunt and it definitely helps that it's on the same street as my work building. With unique plates filled with buttery fish and a wide variety of cooked options including karaage, gyoza and dumplings there's something to please everyone. Service has been exceptional each time I eat here with water glasses being refilled regularly and helpful staff at every turn. It can be slightly more expensive than your bog-standard suburban train, but I'm willing to pay for the atmosphere and comfortable surrounds.

They have simplified their 'plate pricing' by only have 2 types of plates on the menu - all plates with coloured rings around the edges are $4.50, the patterned plates / premium items are $8.00. Wide selection of fresh made sushi rolls, nigri, entree items (gyoza, prawn parcels, chicken karaage bites etc), premium items, desserts and miso soup on the sushi train, but you can also order from the menu. Tried a mini tempura prawn udon bowl soup for $8.00 and it was awesome. Brown rice and black rice sushi rolls on the train and lots of vegetarian options. They have a little takeaway window at the front of the restaurant with sushi rolls for a quick takeaway lunch. The chefs work fast, and all items on the sushi train are fresh, fresh, fresh. Takeaway can be made to order. Great spot for lunch, nice ambiance and friendly staff. Just make sure you get in early to beat the lunch crowds! Takeaway and catering also available.

After a tip of from a friend in the area, however, I decided to roll the dice - or should i say, rice! I was greeted by an older lady with friendly face the moment I walked in the door. And after trying manfully but ultimately unsuccessfully to get the damn thing fully closed I took in my surroundings. I absorbed the brown colour scheme, three smallish tables and... I had taken in my surroundings. This was clearly one of those places were all the action was saved for the kitchen, or so i hoped. I looked up to see a menu board that boasted well over fifty items, including typical Japanese favourites (teriyaki noodles, Japanese curry) to more out of the box fare (octopus balls, eel). I went with a dish that was accompanied by a yummy looking photo and while I'm not entirely sure what the ingredients were it sure was tasty. As I ate I noticed the staff preparing fresh sushi rolls behind the counter and opted to try the spicy beef. Perhaps not a traditional choice but one I can heartily recommend. A sentiment that goes for Oishi Sushi also.
