I booked an afternoon session for myself, mom and mother in law as a late Christmas present- when we arrived everything was set for us on our stations and we had an "art-tender", Jasmine, to help us with every step! She was so kind and patient with our beginner skill sets. What I appreciated the most about all the staff I saw was how they paid attention to detail on our projects- they would offer tips and techniques and we never felt rushed in the process. Exhibits change once every eight weeks. There are different art and pottery studios throughout the building as well as different art galleries on different floors and wings on the building. They change the exhibits out every two months so it's a great place to return to over and over again. The current exhibits upstairs feature Emily Furr and Jamaal Barber. I loved both artists and really enjoyed getting to see their work up close. Several makers in the building have shops open and there is also a small gift shop area in the front of the building by the art vending machine. I picked up a Coburg Cow pin designed by Emily Furr as a souvenir. Also, admission is FREE. They have a small parking lot behind the building and there is a free garage across the street. There is also lots of street parking available. If you go visit, I also suggest going on a day when Swank Desserts is open because it's across the street!

I chose Sew Fabulous because it's close to my home, a friend had a good experience with them, and I was willing to pay more for quality and convenience. My dress was an Azazie bridesmaid dress, and I only needed the hem shortened. I booked six weeks in advance, so there was no rush fee. I paid the required $75 appointment fee, changed into my dress, and the hem was pinned in just a few minutes. When the estimate was calculated, I was quoted $255 to hem the dress. I understand every business has the right to set its own prices, and I'm not criticizing them for charging what they believe their work is worth. I was simply caught completely off guard. My dress cost around $80, and based on conversations with others--including someone who had used this shop for a similar dress--I had no reason to expect a quote anywhere close to that amount. I politely asked if the estimate was correct because I genuinely thought there might have been a calculation error. Instead of feeling like there was room for a conversation or even a second look at the estimate, I immediately felt like the focus shifted to explaining their policies and that the $75 appointment fee would not be refunded if I chose not to proceed. While I understand those policies are posted and businesses have every right to protect their time, I left feeling like there was very little effort to understand why I was so surprised or to work through the situation with me. The price itself wasn't what bothered me most--it was how the interaction was handled. I came in intending to hire them, not to shop around or waste anyone's time. Walking away without any work done but still out $75 left me feeling taken advantage of rather than cared for as a customer. If you do choose Sew Fabulous, I strongly recommend asking for a rough price range before paying the appointment fee so you know whether it's within your budget. I also recommend understanding their payment policies ahead of time, as they differ from many alteration shops. This is only my personal experience, but it wasn't one that left me feeling valued as a customer, and because of that, I wouldn't return or recommend them.

Not only is Ms. Pidgeon a consummate professional, she is a genuinely good person who brings light and laughter to the teaching and learning process. Her comments, critiques, and suggestions are invaluable and have helped me to create art I am proud of. Ms. Pidgeon is an endlessly patient instructor who allows individuals of diverse ages and abilities to develop at their own pace and find the style that is best for them. During each lesson, Susan talks out loud about what the student is learning and why. This is a critical component for me. The instruction is seamlessly blended into working on a painting of my choice. Susan listens carefully to my comments, and that is the all important part of excellent communication and teaching. Ms. Pidgeon gives me confidence to experiment and try new approaches. I appreciate that she gives thoughtful answers to my many questions. One of her favorite expressions is, "There are no art police here." I love that attitude and the fact that it is always possible to improve an acrylic painting using Ms. Pidgeon's techniques. I have also mastered some of he basics of working in oil and how to use mixed media. I continue to explore these mediums, knowing that Susan is a veritable fountain of knowledge. Recently, I learned how to use molding paste to create action and depth in one of my more modern paintings. And in the midst of all the learning and experimenting, I have had fun. The staff is helpful and friendly and they have a variety of ceramics to choose from to paint. They also have options for painting canvases and creating glass art, which I haven't tried yet. I like the new location, which now has a space in the back with booths, etc for a quieter experience or for a group that needs a little more space to work. The only thing that threw me off was that there are a few different spots that have the ceramic options to paint, but they are on opposite side of the room, etc. So after browsing & selecting an item to paint, I happened to see another display on the other wall with items to choose from, but didn't notice them until after the fact. It would be a little easier to see all of my options in one area, but I also understand that people need the space to browse without being too crowded. I like being able to do something "artistic" without having a plan or following instructions. It might not always look the best, but I always have fun doing it!
