The typical services you would expect of a lawn care service, using professional grade commercial equipment (this is not just some guy with a used John Deere riding mower, oil smoking push mower and a rusted out Chevy pick up truck). I'll state this up front ... I have used and trusted Troy for YEARS and up until recently, the service has been top notch.
But I caveat all of this with "if you get Troy" anymore ... while although Troy is a stickler to quality and consistency and knows how to do the job ... the teams he has sent out to do the jobs over the last 3 seasons are just not up to par anymore. And if they do a bad job, although they'll reassure you they and Troy will work to remediate the issue, you'll quickly find out that never really happens anymore (you have to make sure you get a hold of Troy himself to report the issue and even then, you may have to end up having to pay another local commercial landscaping service to come out and repair any damages). Sometimes Troy isn't even told there was an issue.
Troy states that realizing the competition in his area was mostly "the neighborhood kid" and laid off factory workers he needed to find a way to set himself apart from the competition. He did. But now, years later, he's kind of resting on past accomplishments.
The Lawn Pros seem to have possibly over-expanded and like most companies that this happens to ... their work shows it ... having basically become just like "the neighborhood kid" and laid off factory workers Troy worked hard to not be like. I'm not sure what happened to the crews Troy had ... but the ones doing the work now no longer check the lawns or ground first to see if it's even possible to landscape or mow without making a mess (i.e. checking to see if the lawn is so soggy or saturated you sink into it just standing on it), don't clean up after themselves once the mess is made, and then never tell Troy they made a mess in the first place or didn't complete their job. In the past, Troy's crews were just as particular as he is and upfront if the lawn was way too saturated wet to drive their equipment on without damaging it or that they wouldn't be able to trim. I remember many times one of Troy's workers would walk in the yard even before unloading equipment, see his work boots sink into it, and apologize that it was just too saturated to cut that week without ruining the equipment or making the yard look like a mud pile. Or that they could only cut a portion of it. And I was fine with that professional honesty. And sometimes the lawn would not be completely mowed for a few weeks. But lately - they now pull up, jump on the mowing equipment, and attempt mowing and lawn care like they were driving in the Indy 500, forgetting any whipper snip work, and then they're gone leaving you with commercial size tire mud wheel ruts, turfed areas were the grass is ripped out of the lawn, areas where the deck has shaved the grass to the turf, and shredded (not cut) grass which can and has lead to fungus patches. Promises to come back at a later date to repair damage never are kept. And this hasn't been a once or twice deal, it's fairly consistent anymore for the last 3 seasons.
I know what they say, if you don't like the job someone does for you, then do it yourself the next time. I myself, even at my age, will probably just have to go back to doing my own lawn again slowly and cut Troy and The Lawn Pros loose (no pun intended) - even I know when a lawn is too saturated to attempt a job.
If you do decide to use Troy and his crew ... be there when they do the work, only pay them after the work is done and you've inspected it, if there's a mess don't be afraid to withhold payment until its corrected, and immediately call Troy himself if there's issues (don't rely on his crews, because they're not going to say anything to him) so at least you know that he knows and you have a 50/50 chance of getting things straightened out.
I like Troy and his personal work ethic a lot ... but it's apparent with his current crews the same work ethic isn't there anymore, you just can't use The Lawn Pros at this time and expect any consistency in the job or quality. And that is a shame when you have to tell people you just can't recommend him anymore, despite all that he does, and point out on your own lawn why.
