For riders with their own horse or pony, Liege Manor also has a five star livery service for full and working liveries, and a loan scheme for people who wish to have the experience of owning without having to fork out to buy a horse. When we first visited out of hours to just pop in and ask some questions, the receptionist totally…read moreignored us and behaved like she had no idea we were there. She didn't even say hi/acknowledge us, despite us being potential clients at the time and standing right in front of her! We went back and I was given very little information and left to roam the stables on my own despite my lesson time encroaching. It seems the teacher hadn't been informed that I was there and someone who wasn't allowed to handle the horses alone. She came and found me and we led the horse. The teacher was pretty nice and that first lesson was good. However, group lessons were more frustrating than enjoyable. As I was lower grade, I was with very young children on tiny ponies who would sometimes cry or just not respond to the tutor if asked a question, delaying our progress. Most times I felt like we had gotten nowhere and I had learnt nothing new and it was a waste of time and money. It would evidently frustrate the tutors too. We would get a few chances to get trotting but if you have a child in front who just lets their horse stop or they don't listen to what we're doing, you're stuck behind them and you miss your chance to trot and then get told off for being too close to them. You don't get the whole arena for the lessons either. Private yet more expensive lessons are the better ones. Most of the horses for the lower grades are naughty and will not respond, no matter how much you kick (and yes, they tell you to kick hard continuously but even then they have to bring out their whips just to make them move/trot.) When you're prepared, excited and enjoy trotting, but your horse will not move, it is incredibly frustrating. The last time I went, their electricity went so me and a group of children were led by someone and just walked around the stables for half an hour! No lesson, no reduction in price or a refund for not getting what we paid for. I have ridden horses on my own without being led before so it was quite patronising to have a child lead me. They're incredibly stingy with time. Even if they make you late for your lesson, you will lose those precious 5 minutes or so in your lesson time so you may only be paying for a 20-25 minute long lesson in all. When you've paid a lot, not learnt anything and just feel frustrated in your "lesson", it can be a real pain. In all, this place is only good for private lessons, if you can afford it.

Another thing worth knowing about this place if you have kids is that they can teach children from the age of four onwards, unlike many riding schools that can't / won't pay for the insurance for such young riders - but equally it caters for adult learners of any age. My riding instructor there was really professional, knew what she was doing, and got good results out of her classes - so I'd defintiely recommend this school if you're thinking of learning to ride. The prices are very reasonable for group lessons, too - £9.15 for 30 minutes, or £14.65 for 60 minutes. To get there from Gabalfa Roundabout, head to Tesco traffic lights, then go straight over the bridge, turn left into the park where the river bridge finishes, drive between two big pillars, and the Riding School is on the left after about 300 yards.

The owner Bonnie can be strict at times but its just to get you to be the best you can be and it is also for yours and the horses safety. Its a great experience and i love to go every sunday. Its great for begginers and experienced riders both! The price is good and i find that at the end of every lesson i have a smile on my face:) People might think that the horses are 'plodders' as i have read on one previous comment but thats harsh as they are well looked after and are happy and friendly, and it all depends on how well you get them up together in the ride. I would highly recommend this stables for anyone, because it has helped me progress through the years and become a better horsewoman. Bonnie and Jordan are very friendly despite what people may say and i have had goods rides with them both. Every week i find myself learning something new and interesting. I never get tired of the lessons because i love horses so much and practise makes perfect. My favourite things to do in the lessons are: -jumping -bareback -canters -no stirrups and i like to ask bonnie to have hard rides as i like a challenge I love this stables and ive made lots of friends, horses included, if people dont like it here then thats there choice but i wouldnt go to any others stables. I reckon the City of Bristol is defined by its rivers (that's right, I found out from a guide on…read moreour boat tour, that there is actually a hidden river that flows underneath the city, called Frome). And the Avon cuts around the city center and creates all these bends and quirks in the landscape, as well as bringing an enormous sense of flow, energy and vibrancy to the City. I massively enjoyed doing a bit of the Avon river walk and would thoroughly recommend heading down to the M shed on a weekend, to get on their River Avon Tugboat ride for £6 per person for 30 mins- it's especially glorious being out on the river on a sunny day. Loved being able to encounter one of the Locks on the river so up-close and personal, and was excited to see there is actually a ferry that runs from Bristol to Bath in the summer months, and so something I might try and do on my next visit. Massive tip o' the hat to Yelper Laura W whose review I highly recommend reading for why the River is called "Avon" - I totally was unaware of that historical nugget and it really make me chuckle to find out about its origins. I had also really liked Yelper Sam G's photos of the Avon river over the suspension bridge walk, but wasnt able to get that view over the Gorge on this visit, so something I will endevour to get to on my next visit here. The Mighty Avon It…read morecuts right through the heart of Bristol. As some of you might know Bristol used to be a part of the county of Avon which existed between 1974 - 1996. Some people think it still does exist and letters and address' still have Avon listed on them. Anyway the fact that the river avon flows through the city is probably soemthing to do with why the county of Avon was called... well ... Avon! A riverside walk on a sunny day comes highly recommended. If you start out in the City centre, round Bristol Bridge, or futher along towards the Arnolfini then make you way towards the suspension bridge (will probably take around 40 minutes) I can garantee a beautiful walk. There are also some great river side bars and resteraunts to stop off at on the way, when you get to the suspesion bridge walk over it to have the best views of the river and the Avon Gorge.
