A friendly woman opened the door and it was no problem at all to still get a place. We then ordered Pizza in the Camp's Restaurant and I have to admit.. Well.. It kinda sucked. If you have a chance, get a different dish :-) Anyways the staff is REALLY nice- in the restaurant as well as the rest of the camp side. The camp is located up on a hill so be sure you have enough fuel and patience till you arrive :D

It felt like we were bothering them when requesting taxis and general information (even when speaking to them in French). The room itself was not too bad for the price. It is about a 10-15 minute walk from the area with shops and restaurants by the Clermont-Ferrand Cathedral, and about a 20 minute taxi ride to the Puy-de-Dôme.

This is a small museum that combines archeology, geology, and history. I would say that the…read moreengagement was not as high for those of us who do not have a strong interest in the power struggle that ensued as the mighty Roman Empire expanded into France. Millions of years ago, there was volcanic activity. We see evidence of that in the plateau, surrounding volcanic peaks and domes, and rocks. The museum featured only a little of this. Around 50 BC, the Romans and Gauls fought for power throughout France, and this was a battle won by the underdogs protecting a town atop the plateau. There is a lot of information about this time period, with notes from Caesar's diaries, unearthed battle evidence (mass graves with people and horses and weapons and defensive gear). There is also a very tiny bit about what the village atop the plateau looked like with models, found coins, and broken pottery. This is core curriculum for all French people learning about their patrimony. Then the medieval times passed (not sure what happened here for 800 years), and Napoleon III visited once as part of the continued Napoleon legacy of drawing a direct line to the Roman Emperor. Then in 1900 a monument was built to honor the battle. That is the museum. It's really the history of the battle. The location is lovely with views, an easy hikes with informative panels, and picnic tables.

This was my honeymoon backup after a cancelled honeymoon in Val Thorens due to early-season heavy…read moresnowfall and avalanche risk (bummer!). But, it was a-okay! After our cancelled trip, we monitored local snowfall each day (my DH lives in Clermont-Ferrand where we got married), and we decided to come here early one day to get in a day of shredding after they received 6" of unexpected snowfall overnight. It ended up being a good early day of shredding. The snow was fluffy and it wasn't too windy. But in the afternoon, the weather got windy and the runs got very icy. This was my first time shredding in Europe. I didn't like that none of the trails are marked, except for the paper map you receive at the check-in desk. So, unlike USA and Canada mountains where each fork has signs for the trails, there were no signs here at all. So you basically shred at your own "risk". Got stuck in a few dead-ends that weren't groomed and that were actually closed, but had no signage to warn us to avoid it. I'd say that the reds are equivalent to most USA large-mountain blues. I actually much prefer the 4-level slopes (green, blue, red and black) instead of the 3-level slopes (green, blue, black). Overall, a good one-day trip for shredding.
