One of my first experiences of job-hunting in Leeds was here, and I can say, it was not great. I realise this was a while ago now, but it really put me off recruitment agencies.
When I walked in I was told that I'd do a type test, since their recruitment was based solely around administration work. Then I would fill out the forms with all the usual, job history and so on. I did reasonably on my type test, although certainly not to the dizzy heights of 220 wpm (words per minute).
Thinking that this would be a great starting point for gaining employment experience I sat and waited for the lady to come back to me, only to be told when she did that I didn't have the kind of experience they were looking for. At the time I was a little too timid to mention that, since I had only just graduated, I had come to them to *gain* that experience and wasn't that the whole point of a recruitment agency - for them to find me work and therefore gain experience via employment?
I don't know, maybe at the time my application seemed poor, despite having gained a 3rd level qualification, you know - I like to think that my degree surely counts for something. It just seemed like one of those never ending conundrums, a chicken egg nightmare of "I need experience to get employed, but, I can't get experience without being given a job..." and so on ad ifinitum.
Perhaps they have changed since, which is why I've give 3 stars and not 2, but for me it was a total non-starter. read more
