Matt is just a great, all around, fun guy! We took an 8-mile kayaking trip with him at Dead Lakes and he fit right in with the four of us, laughing with us, answering our questions during the trip, and helping us understand the unusual ecosystem and its inhabitants - we loved every minute and cannot wait for a return visit! Matt is phenomenal, entertaining, knowledgeable and worth every penny you pay to use his (reasonably priced) service. We hired him to guide a group of five which ranged in age from 55 - 90 years old. There are many many great things I can say about Matt but most of all he is a gentleman. He has top notch equipment and knows every inch of the Dead Lakes. I wish we had used him earlier in our trip for other activities. He made several great recommendations from restaurants to local businesses. We plan to use him as a guide again for an extended camping trip. read more

I'd been wanting to kayak the Dead Lakes for as long as we've been spending Spring Break in Cape San Blas and finally convinced the rest of the family it was a good idea. Matt took me, my husband, and two middle school-age sons out for a 3-hour trip and it was a magical experience. The water level was high, so some of the cypress knees were obscured. But the cloudy weather lent a mysterious air to the starkly beautiful environment, and Matt's commentary was spot-on. He grew up paddling these waterways and knows the environment, animals, and history of the area like the back of his hand. We saw a beautiful interplay between a family of ospreys, and he pointed out several snakes as well. Even the teenagers agreed it was a high point of the trip! read more

Everything looked great until the end of the first night when my son noticed the grounding pin had been broken off in the charging cable. The first and second night it charged fine. The morning of return pickup we noticed the unit had not totally charged. I made sure meet the rental staff when they picked it up to inform she. She frankly immediately copped an attitude and said she would charge us for the cord and also for not having the unit charged up on pickup. She indicated we should have called immediately when we noticed. Bottom line, I understand both sides, but we were honest and felt like we were accused of lying. I don't care about the extra charges if warranted, but we didn't damage the cord. They provide great carts. My suggestion? Double check everything and pester the crap out of them if anything is not working. They deserve 5 stars, but copped an attitude. We're not all stupid tourists....

I write this review reluctantly. (Only because I don't really want other people to discover this…read morehidden gem.) I've played here for several years now. I think I first played the course approximately 9-10 years ago. I've basically been in love ever since. I went from driving over to play while on vacation to simply staying at the condos on-site. It's that good. The condos are very nice, too, by the way. The layout is extremely interesting/challenging. If you like to grip and rip driver on every tee, find another course. In fact, I only hit driver off of approximately 6-7 tees. It's very much a shotmaker's course, and not just on the approach. Besides the superb layout, the course is always in tip-top shape. The greens are neither especially fast or slow, but they're always in good condition and roll true. If you have a spouse who doesn't play but is game for riding along on occasion, this is a good course for that. It's half golf and half nature ride. It's an Audubon-certified course, but there's a lot of other wildlife/nature to see, too. Honestly, I think I could just ride around here without playing and be entertained. In all seriousness . . . the water hazard that borders 14/17/18 . . . watch out for alligators. I've nearly stepped on some while looking for balls. The only negatives: 1. The adjoining Crooked River Grille (overall a net plus, but somewhat of an underachiever; see my separate yelp review for it) 2. If you stay and play, guests can't - EVER - take carts over to the condos (which are located ON the course, between holes 14/17/18). While it seems minor, this is kind of a big deal to my family and me. In the old days, I would basically get a cart when we got here, put my clubs on it, and just change out as needed based on battery life. That way, my wife could come and go as she wished (i.e., go shopping, to the beach, etc.). Now we have to plan all comings/goings/tee times very carefully.

Facility is very well kept range is nice cart paths are nice tee boxes nice. Course was absolutely amazing. Each hole feels like you are completely secluded and in the middle of nowhere. Lots of strategy here not a driver everywhere place. The course wasn't particularly busy today, but it was probably the only round of golf I've ever played where I only saw one other group while playing. Our group of three scrambled and had a fantastic time enjoying the day and taking our time. 5 stars we will be coming back. Maybe with a few extra sleeves of balls next time!
