Our dog plays with a new friend

We take our 10 month old German shepherd dog once a week. She loves the place and barks when we enter the parking lot. The dogs enjoy playing together. Dogs are vetted before being allowed. Nice amenities for people too.

Be careful! Have had more than one unauthorized charge to my Credit Card And haven't been there in over a year. Won't be going back.

DO NOT VISIT THIS PARK IN A RV or LARGE VEHICLE! We came from Boone which from our Google map said…read more23 minutes or 5 miles. The road to park is very steep in sections and has two (2) hairpin turns not designed for large heavy vehicles. When we got to the state park, at what felt like the top of the mountain, the only thing we saw were a dozen or so new picnic tables surrounded by a field of leafless trees ~ mid April. Very disappointed to say the least. IMPORTANT: On the way back down to Boone our brakes started to fail at about an .08 of the way down and we had the pull over and let them cool down for 45 minutes to let them stop smoking. This was a very scary experience and a poor decision to visit. Absolutely would not recommend this experience in any car or in an RV!!! Hope this helps someone.

There are 5.5 miles of trails. To the summit seems a straight uphill climb. You need to have good shoes on and be somewhat in shape. The view is supposedly spectacular. Our party didn't make it, we took a flatter trail. There is a Junior Ranger Program and an interesting hiking guide to search for fungi. Picnic areas are available. There is a fee to camp. Dogs on leashes are welcome to outside areas, but not inside buildings.

Children 12 and under are required to wear life jacket for safety. The guide who was a summer intern was friendly, knowledgeable and very capable of handling the barge. On the drive in we saw one deer grazing. Parking is $7 per car and the barge ride was $6 a person. We decided not to visit the nature center during this outing but plan to return again in the fall. The lake has several types of fish, turtles, beaver, water snakes and occasional bear looking for food. We would return and bring a picnic lunch and make use of designated picnic areas. There is a trail along the lake that takes about 2 hours to walk. The park is renovating a building and outside space for river otters to arrive in the future. This is a very family friendly place.

It had rained heavily the night before, so there was a bit of mud, but it was a nice moderately difficult up and down hike through the beautiful woods surrounding the lake. We even saw some deer in the middle of the forest! We also did the barge tour, which was enjoyable, as well. We saw lots of deer, birds, a beaver dam, and even a few ducks along the way as we learned about the history of the park. We also did the planetarium show, which was okay, but it felt more appropriate for younger kids then for our teenagers.
