From the very beginning, we were met with genuine compassion, dignity, and a level of care that went far beyond our expectations. The entire staff created a peaceful, supportive environment that helped us focus on what truly mattered ,being present with our loved one. I especially want to recognize Augustine Torres, whose care and dedication made an unforgettable impact on us. Augustine exemplifies what it means to truly care for people. He was consistently attentive, incredibly patient, and deeply compassionate in every interaction. No detail was ever overlooked, he anticipated needs before we even had to ask and handled everything with both professionalism and heart. What stood out most was his ability to bring comfort not just to the patient, but to our entire family. He took the time to explain things clearly, offered reassurance when we needed it most, and treated our loved one with the utmost respect and dignity at all times. In such an emotional and overwhelming experience, having someone like Augustine made all the difference. We are beyond grateful for the care we received here, and especially for Augustine Torres. He is truly exceptional at what he does, and this hospice center is fortunate to have someone so dedicated and compassionate on their team.

My father was recommended for hospice and I decided to bring him to Austin so I could help tend to…read morehim better. I picked Aspen for their proximity to Legacy Oaks South Austin. No one had said anything bad on Google, so I figured we'd go with them. Feyemeh was helping me with the details of preparing for the move. We talked on the phone, texted, and emailed. Day 1 moving my dad into Legacy Oaks was a little rough. Nothing had shown up , including a bed for him to lay in. I got a call from Legacy Oaks that their nurse who was supposed to do an initial check hadn't showed up that afternoon too. Spoiler alert - that was the end of anything negative I can say about Aspen. The issues were understandable too because I had only started working with them a week or so prior to bringing him to town and our arrival date was up in the air literally until we were on the road to Austin. Feyemeh was trying to get it all to align. The next day I got a call from the admitting nurse and manager Jenny. She went to see him late that evening he showed up. She wanted to make sure to get a prompt eye on him. The bed and equipment showed up on day 2. My dad quickly declined after coming to Austin. The nurses communicated often and well regarding his status and what we should do. Their office's proximity did seem to help him receive fairly constant and prompt care. I was with him the Sunday after bringing him to town and showed up when Veronica, another Aspen nurse, arrived to check up on him. She was thorough and gave me a good education in what was happening with him. He was showing signs of dying right then, and about an hour after I arrived, he passed away. As fast as the decision to come to Austin happened he was gone. Other than the few start up issues, Feyemeh, Jenny, and Veronica were always available to help me navigate what was happening and how to deal with it.

Before he got here I toured the San Marcos offerings and decided on Brookdale SMS and both he and I are happy with the choice. Yes, the building is plain but I learned from Cincinnati that you have to look under the hood and that's where Brookdale shines. Everyone I've encountered goes out of their way to make sure Dad is happy and healthy and keeps me up to date with anything of significance happening in his life. The senior staff are professional and responsive and the aides are pleasant and competent. The low turnover rate of the staff is an indicator of a well run facility, especially in such a demanding field. I felt assured in the Covid-19 precautions and the proof of their efficacy was zero cases, staff and residents; a friend's mother died of Covid in a nearby facility. We would make the same choice again and highly recommend Brookdale San Marcos South.

I feel it is important to know the facts about the assisted living community that will become your family members new home. Most of, if not all the communities that Brookdale purchases are older, outdated buildings, which I'm sure comes with a multitude of problems. I could list numerous things, but the problem that effected my family members living situation is the outdated plumbing which caused multiple water leaks in and around her apartment. Due to the lack of attention in fixing the problem correctly, over time the continuous water leaks allowed for mold/mildew to build up. (See attached pictures) Included in the residents monthly rent is weekly housekeeping and laundry. I have attached a picture of the mildew under the toilet rim of the toilet my family member used daily. This disgusting picture was taken only 4 days after her scheduled Monday apartment cleaning was done. I'll let you make the decision as to the quality of their housekeeping services. Three meals a day are also included in the residents monthly rent. However, when the food they are being served is so bad that some of the residents go to the grocery store, incurring the additional expense to buy food to eat or they just skip the meals completely, this is unacceptable. The resident's complaints and suggestions about the food and never changing menu seem to fall on deaf ears, as the management team and head chef do nothing to improve the situation. Lastly and most importantly, Brookdales Emergency Call Alert System for their residents is inconsistent and most likely outdated. The staff's response time to the resident's calls is not always acceptable and UNSAFE. No one, especially an elder family member should have to sit on the floor, after a fall, for 40 minutes waiting for someone to come help them! The staff blames this on being understaffed, but management will tell you that is not the case. Either which way certain people are lying to cover up the seriousness of the problems going on in this community, not to mention the extremely unprofessional way this situation was handled by upper management personnel, Cyndi keefe. When expressing my complaints and concerns regarding the welfare and safety of my family member I was completely offended by Cyndi's condescending responses in addition to some remarks made by her that were totally uncalled for. Considering how expensive it is for our family member to reside in an Assisted Living Community, is it too much to ask of these communities to provide quality food for them to eat, a clean apartment for them to live in and to be taken care of in a healthy, happy, safe environment with a management team that truly cares about them? Thank you for taking the time to read this.
