This has a bit of a Cinema Paradiso feel to it. The way theaters used to be. The way theaters should be. The screens are nice and the sound is great- that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the FEEL of actually going into a movie theater. Not just a cookie cutter, bland, corporate cattle call. The locals are terrified that Tiger Woods and Justin Timberlake are going to buy this place. Gut it. And turn it into a golf simulator. Thats the rumor. Dear God, please prevent this from happening! This place deserves to exist.

Plenty of screens & toilets. Last few times it's been relatively quiet, which is nice! You can choose your seat and chill. It has a costa, so you even grab a coffee and take it into the screen with you, beats a fizzy drink sometimes! Opposite costa is the odeon's fast food bit with nachos and drinks etc to get you munching through the moo ooo vie!

I was let down the other week when my showing was sold out but the guy was really nice behind the til and gave us VIP seats for our alternative viewing. Like I said..super nice. There are also loads of choices for food either before or after in the surrounding restaurants.

A decent local cinema…read more It has a retro look from the outside, with old school lettering spelling PLAYHOUSE on the front of the building, with letters missing. I have never discovered if this is intentional or they just cannot be bothered changing the light bulbs. Inside, you have a very unremarkable cinema. Seven screens of wildly varying quality - no surround sound except in screens 1 to 3 - and old looking seating with the usual sticky floor, worn feeling of an older cinema. My main gripe is that the cinema has so many screens, yet it will hold onto mainstream movies long after appeal has subsided, moving them down to less and less impressive screens, milking them as long as possible. I feel the cinema could do with a more eccentric taste in film, with a faster turnover. I would certainly go to the cinema more if they played more unusual movies, such as foreign choices or indie movies. There is no need to keep playing Star Trek for about a month and a half when you could play something a little more interesting instead. Mainstream blockbusters are fine and have their place, but with such an old, historic building, the cinema could do with carving out a reputation for supporting lesser known cinema, a lot like the Dundee Contemporary Arts has.

If you are buying snacks here be aware that there is an Asda just a few minutes and you can buy your items there, some items nearly four times cheaper. A pack of M&M's where £3.95 and Asda was £1.00 that's s massive £2.95 of a difference. The cinema area was small but the seats where comfortable. I couldn't get a phone or wifi signal anywhere. I would come back to this cinema.
