I love seeing folks just sitting back and enjoying the day. It was perfect fall weather.

Y'all I hate traffic and I wasn't sure how much we would have on this alternate route through the Smokey Mountains. Well this was a blessing in disguise. We had such a wonderful time. No Wi-Fi, just me and my guys hanging out watching people and nature. I kept saying how American I felt.

Convenient center for education, parking tags, rest breaks, and elk watching. We stopped here while driving through Cherokee to use the restroom and ask about the elk. The employees at the visitors center are knowledgable and helpful. They informed us that we had just missed the elk who had grazed near the center earlier in the day. Luckily we saw some later on in the park and again while driving through town. Drive carefully and keep in mind the rules regarding distancing yourself from the elk.

Wonderful stop to pick up park maps, buy little souvenirs, and mingle with other visitors. The staff were very friendly and helpful with answering questions. You can stop here to purchase a parking pass that's now required everywhere in the national park if you plan to park more than 15 minutes. Behind the visitor center you'll find a beautiful walking trail along side a river and as well as interesting historical structures. Also, stopped in on a Saturday afternoon and was happily surprised by a live folk band playing inside the center.

We had decided to go up to Newfound Gap to walk part of the Appalachian Trail just so we could say we did. I know cheesy touristy stuff. Oh well it was a nice cool day for it. Once we had finished walking the trail for a mile or so we headed on into North Carolina and stopped at the visitor center to get our stamps for our National Park Passport and to explore the area. The visitor center inside had all kind of information about the area then there is a trail that follows the river with an old farmstead that you can explore. The 144 year old barn was really fascinating minus all the idiots that think its ok to write on stuff that isn't there's. Walking the trail next to the river was nice, with a few spots to drop down to the river and admire the crystal clear water. Then we came around the corner and there was an elk just laying about 100 feet off the trail and just pass him was probably 2 dozen elk just grazing in the open field. Such majestic creatures. Oconaluftee center did not disappoint and was happy to get my stamps as well.

This Great Smoky Mountain National Park visitor center has a big interpretive display section with short films about the elk reintroduction and other topics. Outside, there is a trail down to the river and the mountain farm museum all with stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Continuing our 2022 Southwestern North Carolina Thanksgiving weekend roadtrip, we stopped here upon entering the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. We always like checking out the National Park Visitors Centers. They always have a lot of good information. After parking and walking inside we learned US 441 going through the park was closed because of downed trees from the windstorm earlier in the day. My wife and I thought what wind? The wind we've experienced in our first six months in North Carolina is nothing like we experienced living in Reno, Nevada for six years. I guess if you don't see much wind for a while it has a greater impact when it does happen. We had planned to visit Clingmans Dome because it closes for the season on 11/30. I guess we will have to do that another time. Unfortunately there were no elk grazing when we were at the visitors center. We ended up spending more time here than we usually do as we decided what to do. The visitors center has a very good interpretive center and a nice gift shop with books, shirts, hats, etc. The Park Rangers were in front of the building greeting guests and talking to visitors. One of them was holding a large antler which we think once belonged to an elk. It was a very good stop and we learned a lot. We will have to come back on our next trip to the area. We ended up changing our hotel reservation in Cherokee, NC to Asheville, NC so we could drive closer to home with the extra time we gained.

On our way to Florida from Tennessee, we decided to stop here on 12/4/22 for a bathroom break. We have been here many times, not just for the bathrooms, but for the outside exhibits and to look in the gift shop. Today we had time for only the bathrooms. The water was cold, but the hand dryers had hot air. This stop provided an opportunity to check our text messages. We were unable to get cellular service from Gatlinburg to this location. In the mountains, you get no cell service. In the past we've seen elk grazing or lying around. No elk today!

This visitor center is the main visitor center for the south side of Great Smokey Mountains National Park. The interior is fun and filled with souvenirs that kids and families will love. You'll find everything from pushies to post cards. The national park stamp us located just inside on your left toward the back as you enter. There's a small wooden township just next to it that shows what life was like back in the 1800s. Don't approach the chickens. This area is also hugely popular for elk viewing on the adjacent field. Just be sure to give them plenty of space. You can hike a trail to get near them, but again, allow plenty of space. Safer viewing can be found on the outdoor patio connected to the visitors center.

The best visitor center and park shop in the Smokies. Great bathrooms, beautiful setting, and lots of elk! I spent a lot at the store - round-up and you can support the parks. The museum is also informative.

Really really excellent visitor center in the National Park! Super clean bathrooms and just a really modern building overall. This is a fantastic place to start your journey through the Great Smokey Mountains. The people that work here are all super friendly and helpful as well. The best part is when you see the deer come in the mid to late afternoons and early evenings to graze on the nearby fields. Truly a sight to behold seeing these majestic creatures. Definitely stop by here when you're visiting! :)

We went with the kids to this visitor Center before heading into the national park. Beautiful place and the small trail teaches about the place and it's history. Great stop for kids and there is also a small creek that runs through this place and there is a short walking trail along the stream.

The Oconaluftee Visitor Center is a great place to stop. The restrooms are clean and the visitor center provides information on the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There is even a museum inside the visitor's center to learn about the area and the people. The rangers working are helpful to recommend places to visit and let you know what areas are closed. They have maps available and a very nice gift shop.

We came trying to see some elk, being that they stay on this side of the nation park. We were there maybe 20 minutes and elks came walking right through! It was awesome and I'm so glad we got to see some elks. Sadly the bulls were not around as it's not mating season. We did the little trail by the river which was really peaceful. Would definitely recommend stopping by if you're in the parks, it is a far drive from cades cove, be mindful when planning!

Trail crosses under blue ridge parkway. Pics of the trail, people bridge, information sign, herd of elk enclosed. Here is a great afternoon! Start with lunch at wise guyz pizza (see separate review). After lunch cross the river on the people bridge. Turn right and short distance starts the River trail. Walk to the visitor center, chat with the rangers, check out the museum. Then walk back to wise guyz and your parked car. Good lunch and decent hike, doesn't get much better than that. Enjoy!

The Farmhouse Museum located behind the visitor center was really fun to walk through. There are many chickens walking around the area, as well as a hog pen. There's also a trail beyond the hog pen that allows you to walk down by the creek. This was a fun stop! Would highly recommend!

The nice…read morething about visiting the visitor center in a small town is that you get a nice picture of the town because the people who staff these centers are usually long time residents, they really love the town and they are always enthusiastic about visitors. They represent the very best of life in a small town. We stopped here to get information about the area and it is one of the cutest buildings on the main strip. It has a shaded outdoor seating area and nicely manicured lawn. On a busy Saturday morning, they offered free parking in their adjacent lot which is perfect if you want to explore Main Street. They had lots of information that was very well organized along the office walls. Don't forget to get a map of the city to help you along your way. ABOUT THE TOWN: The one thing that really surprised me about Hendersonville was the unexpected downtown area. I expected it to be small and quaint with great historical buildings. However, it is a very typical tourist spot that was overrun with tourists on a Saturday morning. If you are not a smoker and do not like being around it, beware because they were out in full force and we were constantly having to dodge the gauntlet of smokers hanging out on the sidewalks. Unfortunately, it really affected our ability to see the town in its best light. If I had to visit again, I would do so on a weekday morning before the stores open so that I could really appreciate the buildings. I would then find a nice downtown breakfast restaurant to enjoy a meal without the smoke bombs. Although I really loved the many outdoor dining options that were available, the experience would be ruined by all of the smoking in these areas, so this was not an option. I would love to see them remove the museum from the old historic courthouse because it was very awkward and did not make sense. This building is the "show" and should be left open and uncluttered so that it can be fully appreciated. If you visit, you will want to see the courthouse and the historic depot which are great historical landmarks.

We have taken dozens of food tours over the years. This was by far, and it's not even close, the best one we have ever taken. Stu is awesome. He's knowledgeable and passionate about the Asheville food scene. He's also funny, interesting, and incredibly engaging. (During the tour, a car drove by and a passenger yelled out, "Stu, you're the best! You are a rockstar!") The six stops on the tour were all top notch. And this wasn't your typical food tour where you walk into a restaurant, have a small bite to eat, say hi to the owner, and leave. Instead, we were seated at each restaurant and Stu explained the entire menu as well as the history of the restaurant while we ate. He did an incredible job promoting the restaurants as well as the Asheville food scene in general. Last thing, be warned, you do not want to eat at all before taking the tour. We were essentially served five full meals in three hours. Do yourself a favor, show up hungry. The food is so good you don't want to miss out on any of it by being full. I can't emphasize enough that you should take this tour if you are in Asheville. I give it a six out of five stats! Thanks Stu! You ARE a rockstar!
