Kit Carson House - Carson's desk

    Kit Carson House

What an amazing man with a life full of adventure. It's surprising that more people don't know what…read morea hero was Kit Carson and how much of an impact he had on the American West. He's got a frickin' state capitol named after him - Carson City, Nevada. I mean, WOW! Frontiersman, trapper, adventurer, military leader and finally Indian agent, Kit Carson lived a life that can only be imagined. Except for him, it was real. The Museum itself is a little small and you'd miss the rather ramshackle appearance if you didn't know it was here. A bummer really. But it is his original home, which has been restored by his brother Masons due to his historical relevance. Only a four room house, which is pretty amazing if you think about it. Watch the movie (or find it online) and tour the home, which has many of his original possessions including his saber and scabbard, brigadier general epaulettes and a number of the magazines and books of the day telling of his adventures. The small gift shop has a collection of biographies for sale as well. What a great man. Don't miss it.

If you try to visit you will find only a few free parking spaces on the street which are taken. You will then need to secure parking around the Taos downtown. The parking machines won't work. The information screens won't advance. I finally started punching random buttons out of frustration and after changing lots. To my surprise the machine asked for my license plate number! So I was successful one time and I got one receipt for all of my attempts. But I was later charged FIVE times ! Two of the charges occured one week after leaving the state. The merchant number for parking charges goes unanswered. You will then have to contact city hall. I am still waiting to get the situation sorted out. Then, your visit will be shortened due to the time wasted on finding parking. I could not watch the short film on his life. And I would say a 5-6 dollar admission would be more befitting the site than 10 dollar.

Pueblo of Pojoaque Bison Ag Program - Phil & Staff preparing for us

Phil even asked his staff to wait for us so we can see the Bison feeding for that day. Normally the tour would be more people but on a winter time, Phil fitted us in for 1:15 pm tour of the Bison Program. Phil showed us the Bison, the land where the Bison live , all the fences and water wells and gave an informative insight of their life. It was very interactive as we asked Phil where the water come from and how they get it to the Bison etc... It was suppose to be 1.20 hour long but Phil was so kind , I think we was there for close to 2 hours. I have a difficult time finding any local restaurants that served Bison burger and Phil extended his hospitality inviting my family for Bison Burger Lunch with his staff on the next day. Wow it was amazing lunch... I will post some pics later. Its the best and amazing cultural experience of our Santa Fe / Albuquerque vacation !!! I have done horse back riding and other outdoor activities. But to experience and interact with real members of Pueblo of Pojoaque was a cultural experience that I will treasure and tell all my friends to do if they are ever in the Santa Fe NM area. My Mom & Dad loved Phil and they don't even speak fluent english and knew he was a good man as I translated for them what Phil was explaining to us. I was so surprise that they are only on face book page listed under Pueblo of Pojoaque Bison / Ag Program. ( They don't have their own web site but part of the pueblo of Pojoaque web site). Finding them on facebook will be much easier if you search using the listing I provided above. I really want to let other Yelpers find Phil & his amazing staff and view the Bisons as I have. I only came to notice them on a flyer that I saw on the Poeh cultural center ( Museum for Pueblo of Pojoaque. ) I am proud to be the 1st yelper to review this amazing program. They are about 20 mins / 16 miles from Santa Fe plaza and about 5 mins away from the Hilton Buffalo Thunder Hotel ( Where I stayed). Please click helpful and mention Jayson from NY to Phil and he take care of you. The price depend on number of people and group size. I can tell you that it was much cheaper then any horseback riding that I have done before and was twice as entertaining. Phil was so kind he checked on me the next day to make sure I had a safe trip back to NY as he knew I was running against some snow in my drive back to Albuquerque airport. Wow he told me they got close to 10 inches of snow in that area.

The buildings and center have every accurate element of Pojoaque architectural detail. The Gallery has at least two levels. I only got to see the entrance hall because I immediately realized my wife would love the sculpture, and I went to send her in... we had our dogs in the car, so I had to go out to get her, and stay behind. Before I went out I briefly saw the person tending the gallery... she was doing something on her computer and said she'd be right back, and instructed me not to take pictures inside; I acknowledged that I don't take pictures of others' artwork. And I mentioned I was sending my wife in, as the attendant disappeared into a short doorway and sat at the computer with her back to the galleryl. I walked outside and immediately sent my wife in to see ... and by the time she got there (2 minutes later at 4:53), the open signs had been flipped to closed, and the door was locked. In disbelief, I went back up and knocked and then tried calling... but no luck. So, I'd advise any visitor to be there well in advance of 5PM when they close, as the attendant apparently closes early even when a potential sale is walking in from the parking lot during posted hours.

He is so passionate about the history of Kit Carson and his influence on the area and the expansion of the West. Unbeknownst to me, he had been there as a young boy. Now that he's old - lol - he didn't remember the museum bring set up the way it was. We arrived at approximately 3:20PM which was forty minutes from closing time. Dave, the lone museum staff member, explained that he would stay as long as we needed, but not accept any new visitors after a certain time. Tickets to the non-profit museum were $10 per adult. Cash or card was accepted. Dave made our visit a 5-star experience. He loves history. He has read several of the books if not all of them from the gift shop. He recommended "Blood & Thunder" by Hampton Sides which was an historical account of Kit Carson's life, "yet reads like a novel." We first watched a 20-minute documentary in the theater across the courtyard highlighting Carson's key adventures. The women's restroom was nearby and reasonably clean. Then we trekked back over to the museum. If you're over 5'6" watch your head because the doorways are low. There were minimal artifacts scattered throughout, but we enjoyed it nonetheless. Parking was a bit of a hassle as there was no lot - only metered street parking a ways down. And in the last words of Kit Carson, "Goodbye, friends, adios amigos."
