Ever wonder if your BnB host wants your money there more than you? You won't if you stay at Ochenta y Dos and meet owners Dave and Pat. Both were uber helpful in assisting us plan our trip, which included a price-conscious side trip to Chichen Itza and general getting around town. More than that, they easily accommodated our un-godly timed arrival of 12:30a (other places balked at the idea), served an impressive breakfast with our food restrictions in mind (strongly recommend the homemade banana bread), and made us feel like old friends. BnB stays are great when your hosts can strike the difficult balance between being ever-present and owner-has-left-the-building invisible. Ochenta y Dos understands this, and they were sensitive to the level of engagement we wanted each day during our stay. But wait, I haven't even mentioned the grounds! This newly renovated property is stunning with its colonial architecture where all rooms face the ample pool (no tiny 'plunge pool' here). We stayed in Suite 4 and found it clean and well appointed with a comfortable bed and awesome rain shower in the roomy bathroom. We gave the fan and AC a workout and they worked beautifully to create our own private oasis after a walk into the centro. Lounging by the pool surrounded by swaying palms felt very luxurious and peaceful ... until we didn't want that. Ask the owners to 'release the hounds' and you're met with four of the most charming small dogs ever--you'll want to stash them in your carry-on for the trip home. If dogs aren't your thing, no problem, they are kept away by default. Overall, we had a wonderful 5-night stay in Merida due largely to the skill, hospitality, and beauty at Ochenta y Dos. The price, location, and accommodations were ideal for us, and we feel we've made new friends as a bonus. Thanks for the Merida memories, guys! read more

Simply the best! After an adventurous trip through Quintana Roo and Yucatan, we spent the last days of our vacation at Ochenta y Dos. The luxury and comfort of the property added the wellness factor to our trip. It is beautifully designed with many references to the Hacienda-style, which Merida is so famous for, but without turning it into a museum. In fact we checked out a 5-star hotel downtown, which is a historical building with all the postcard Hacienda motives at 500+ USD a night. But the Rococo furniture felt uncomfortable and the 5-star attitude of the staff resembled the master-and-servant relationship from the past- an atmosphere we don't enjoy. Ochenta y Dos turned out to be a much better choice. Mostly because of things that money can't buy. Like the amazing host, we saw in Patrick and Dave. From the first tour through B&B until we finally said goodbye, they were the perfect hosts: there for you, when you need them; in the background when you want time for yourself; always naturally friendly and available for questions; very knowledgable about local restaurants and sights. This B&B actually deserves one B more: The first for super comfortable beds, the second for delicious breakfasts and a third for befriend. We had great talks, many laughs and the feeling of being at home with friends. read more

If you're going to Merida, stay here. Heck, go to Merida just to stay here. I visited, solo, for my birthday and was immediately made to feel welcome and comfortable. The rooms are spacious, and well equippep; it perfectly combines facilities akin to a 5 star hotel a, luxurious family home and the feel of a relaxed guest house, and is excellent value for money. A 20 minute walk gets you to the city centre, and after sightseeing it's a real treat being able to come 'home', dip into the pool and relax on a lounger. Dave and Patrick are the perfect hosts, kind and considerate, knowledgable, helpful - Dave even drove me to the bus station (twice!) - thanks Mr D ;). The breakfasts, enjoyed by the poolside, are plentiful, varied and amazingly scrummy, and the guys offer a happy hour in the evenings so you can chat to other guests over homemade margaritas (wow) and guacamole (double wow), as well as extras including local excursions. I'm not sure who I loved more, the guys or their four adorable dogs, but I truly enjoyed my stay and felt sad to leave. Hoping to return soon. read more

Spending Christmas away from home can be strange at best; but, at Ochenta y Dos its like you are at home. Patrick and Dave have done a great job making a home into a business, not a business into a home. Christmas dinner was over-the-top and we sat for hours eating, and talking around their huge dining room table. So much fun.
