Drupati’s Roti and Doubles

Drupati’s Roti and Doubles

Pine Grove

Good variety. Delicious food. Great value…read more This place was an accidental find, but a welcome one at that. Drupatis, despite being branded as Caribbean Chinese Cuisine, is actually more like a tri-hybrid of Indian, Caribbean, and Chinese, with all cuisines being properly represented with all of the said cultures' best offerings. The Boneless Curry Lamb ($15.80) was cooked well and was very tender. The Trini Bar-B-Que was extremely good value at its price point of $14.65. It was served with what I would assume as Yang Chow Fried Rice, some green salad, coleslaw, and BBQ chicken lathered with a creamy white sauce. We also were able to try the Soya Sauce Chicken ($14.75), which was like a sweet and sour chicken dish. For appetizers, we were able to try the Aloo (potato) Pie ($4.15) and the Saheena ($4.85). For anyone wanting to try some uniquely Trinidad and Tobago snack food, I would recommend the Saheena, which is fried rolled-up spinach leaves. This fried snack was a good balance to the strong and saucy flavors from our other food orders. We ordered everything at the same time, but the Saheena was served last and after all of our main dish orders. It was a good amount of busy when we dined in at around 1:30 PM on a Sunday. People were sitting for dine in and there was constant turnover of people coming in to pick-up takeout. The dining area was roomy with lots of space in the middle. I believe the place caters to events and other functions with how the layout is done.

Great restaurant serving Guyanese, Trinidadian and Tobagonian, and Caribbean Chinese food. According to the business name on Google Maps, this is the original location. The location is somewhat in the middle of nowhere, so it's somewhat of a hidden gem. The inside is very spacious with an empty 'middle' space that becomes a dance floor at night time. On Saturday nights, there are DJ, musicians, and bottle service. There is a large take-out counter and ample dine-in space with booth seatings and large tables. Food is excellent - very economical with large portions and everything is delicious! There are West Indian and Caribbean classics such as Trinandian doubles, aloo pie, and various curries with rice and roti, as well as Caribbean Chinese dishes. My favourite items to get here are the Bake & Shark (very firm and great-tasting fish with veggies inside a soft bun), Conch Curry, and Mixed Vegetables (very fresh, crisp, and delectable - cooked with garlic). We also tried the King Fish Curry, which came with either rice or roti, and salad (lettuce, cucumber, tomato). It was alright, but I preferred the Conch Curry and the fish inside the Bake & Shark more. The Shrimp Aloo Pie (Gourmet Doubles) contained only 3 pieces of shrimps and minimal potatoes. The shrimps inside were delicious with a mild curry flavour. Conch Curry was nice and chewy, bathed in delicious curry sauce with a non-viscous soupy consistency. It was great on top of rice. It came with curry lentil soup that was equally tasty. For the 4 Veggies with Roti, we chose: bhagi (spinach), baigan choka (eggplant), pumpkin, and okra. Each one had a smooth texture and was full of flavours. For the roti, there was a choice between plain roti or lentils roti. We chose the lentils option, and it came as crumbly lentils within the roti - the extra plant-based protein was very welcomed! The Mixed Vegetables from the Chinese Caribbean menu tasted better than the mixed vegetables you'd get at any other Chinese restaurant. All the vegetables were super fresh, still crisp (not overcooked), and very delicious with lots of garlic and not oily or greasy at all. The dish tasted healthy and wholesome. Service was excellent. The person who took our order had great memory. We ordered a lot of items with various customizations, and she managed to remember everything. She also seemed to be very on the ball, making sure we were well taken care of and had everything we needed, while juggling the front desk / take-out counter, constantly on the phone (either taking pick-up orders or communicating with the kitchen), and serving the dine-in customers at the same time. Talk about multi-tasking skills.

So I ordered the large jerk pork with rice and peas. The g/f ordered the large jerk chicken with rice and peas. Overall the flavour of the jerk pork and chicken was pretty good. Maybe a bit over cooked and dry but had a nice flavour. The rice and peas were a disappointment though. It was bland and dry.

Prices are very reasonable, a little on the lower side compared to many Jamaican places I've been in the GTA. Problem was I stood there alone trying to figure out if anyone was actually working. I continued to stand by the half wall in the entrance waiting for someone to come out and ask dine in or take out?. Finally, after what seemed a long minute, I saw someone moving around in a cut out located off the side around the corner leading to the hallway....you'd need to know this or you may find yourself leaving due to lack of people running out to help you. I can see why the comments for poor service, the person that took my order was uninspired and made no effort to accommodate anything without being pressed, despite telling her it was my first time there and needed help. I could not understand why I had to order at the cash in order to dine in?? Pretty sure made it clear I wanted to sit and try a few things, yet, I was told to order at the cash, got a Styrofoam container with my food, plastic fork & knife and sat myself. Even stranger was not 5 mins later, someone else came in, went to the cash, then sat in the dining room table where he was fully catered to and served food, ate with a real plate and full cutlery...Awkward?!. That aside, I had the Jerk Chicken/Curry Goat combo plate for $16.50 (all in). The food was tasty, Chicken and Goat were tender, rice and beans cooked perfectly and slaw was slightly bland. Overall the flavors were pleasant not too strong/spicy, The large portion plate included 4pcs of chicken and the goat filled the smallest void in the tray, Largest portion was rice and beans. I found they were pricey for the size and some of the dishes and Roti was higher than I expected,($15) so I did not order them. Overall, good food, price on the high end, service non-existent (in my case).
