Everything I need in one place. Including a friendly smile. Shopped around and in the end I purchased everything here.

Busch Gardens

Yeah, I kinda know my way around a commercial kitchen, and even though I haven't worked "the line"…read morein a while, I still enjoy visiting restaurant supply warehouses for new pots, pans, and kitchen gadgets to use at home. Louis Wohl & Sons (the same folks who advertise on TV) have both a wholesale operation selling to commercial restaurant operations, as well as an entire retail store (Chef's Warehouse) which is open to the general public. The two facilities are located in a very large building along 46th Street in between Fowler Ave and Busch Blvd. The building is located in a quiet residential area of town, south of USF and very near MOSI. As you enter the doorway to Chef's Warehouse you're greeted by one of the staff who will gladly walk you around the store answering your questions and helping you find various items. If you're a home cook looking for items that are a bit sturdier, and will last a bit longer than what you might find in a high-end cookware store at the mall, then Chef's Warehouse is the spot for you. They have pots, pans, bakeware, cooking utensils, high-quality knives, cutting boards, bar ware, food storage containers, and a wide variety of plates, glasses, cutlery, and serving items. If you frequently throw dinner parties, or just enjoy entertaining at home then you'll marvel at the selection at Chef's Warehouse. This is the perfect place to visit if you have a small catering or food truck business. I walked in today looking for some extra half-sized sheet pans and cooling racks for tomorrow's big chicken wing roasting festivity, and found exactly what I wanted at a price MUCH cheaper than I would have paid at the better-known cookware stores. In general the quality of the cookware is superior since these items are designed to be used in commercial kitchens, and the price is often better as well. Take a tip and pay this place a visit!

Louis Wohl & Sons sell to commercial restaurants, but they also have the retail store "Chef's Warehouse". There are not many restaurant supply stores that are open to the public, so this was a great find. My boyfriend is a line cook, as well as a cook at home. He had become interested in buying newer/better cookware, similar to what he uses at his job. We have gone there twice, and left with a frying pan, chef's jacket, knife, knife guard, and meat thermometer. They also have chef shoes and pants, strainers, dishware, hot dog warmers, coolers, pots, and a myriad of other kitchen utensils. Since they mainly cater to restaurants, some of the prices are pretty steep for an individual. For example, we will not be paying $70 for a frying pan. However, there are plenty of reasonably priced options for those who are more money conscience. If you are a cook and interested in some high quality kitchen ware, you should check out this place.

There's covered parking for about 60 vehicles right outside the door, and maybe that much more uncovered. They have large flatbed carts that you can roll to your vehicle. Restaurant Depot is not some colorful touristy market, it's a working wholesale-only supplier, not retail. (By the way, it's a division of Jetro Cash & Carry's company, in case you see that name.) You have to be a registered member in food-service to shop here. There are aisles and aisles of food by-the-case and food-service-size containers of name-brands and less-known brands. Pretty much every food you can imagine, including some you could call ethnic, such as tortillas, empanadas, ramen, etc. They even have beer, wine, and spirits. We cheered for the cases of poppyseed hot dog rolls and Vienna-brand hot dogs, so, yes, local places really Can make authentic Chicago dogs if they want to! They also had cookware, utensils, and food-service supplies. Our favorite part of the warehouse-size store was the cold-curtained refrigerated room, a store-sized area itself. You have to borrow an insulated jacket hanging near the entryway to stay warm in there! The room is full of frozen meats and poultry and dairy, and a great selection of fresh seafood on ice, a two-aisle-wide section that includes whole fish and huge shrimp and scallops. For us curious foodies, Restaurant Depot is something to see at least once, even if we had to help carry a Lot more for our friend than we buy for ourselves at those big box grocery stores :-) And our friend is working to create a Chilean Seabass and scallops Rockefeller recipe, which i hope we get invited to help taste!

Will be back here to load up on cheeses next time I'm entertaining. Very helpful and friendly staff who gave me tips on what to look for and their favorite finds. Look for red tags on the shelves for what are often discontinued items marked way down. Pro tip: bring a sweater or jacket to wear because it is freezing cold in the cooler!
