The locker room is what you'd expect in a facility open to the public, but the pool itself, water quality, staff attitude and lifeguards are all first class. The pool water temperature and chlorine levels are nearly always right where they should be. At times when I've forgotten my goggles, I have completed my workout without great eye discomfort. Currently, October 2022, the pool is not open as many hours as it was prior to the pandemic. On Saturday and Sunday afternoons, the pool is divided in half with four lanes for laps swimmers ; the balance of the pool is reserved for recreational swimmers. There is a diving board for those that pass the swim test. Be sure to check the schedule before heading to the pool as swim lessons can intrude on lap swimming lanes. Children's and adult swim lessons are offered for a modest price, and the classes tend to be small. Most all of the staff wear face masks at all times. As of now, masks are not required for entry. The entry fee has varied over the years, but it has always been very affordable. Right now, 2022, seniors get in for one dollar.

This pool is located on the campus of Venice High School, and is open to the public during various hours (see website for details). Also, it is the only indoor pool in that area that I know of beside the one at the Santa Monica 24 hour fitness. The locker rooms, like any public pool, leave much to be desired, and are built like concrete bunkers. The walls and floor are all concrete, thus cold pools of water cover the entire floor and it is freezing in there, especially when you're wet. However one thing I liked was that rather than having actual lockers, there is an attendent behind a cage window that you hand your items to kind of like a coat check. They also have these mesh bags that you can use which hang on these metal poles they set up so that you don't have to put your stuff onto the wet bench or floor. Once you put everything in the bag you simply hand it to the attendant for you to get later. This way you don't have to cram everything into a little locker or worry about bringing your own lock. There are also lifeguards on duty and they have kickboards and poolbuoys available for use. The structure itself is also very well ventilated so though it gets colder than a smaller building, there is less of that strong chlorine smell. All of the attendants and lifeguards on duty are friendly and helpful. The crowd is mixed, though I would say it skews toward the older side. All in all, this is a great place if you're looking for a no frills swim. While you do have to suck it up while you're undressing/dressing before and after swimming if you're going during the colder months (and wet floors and benches are annoying), the pool is spacious and well kept. I also love that it's less than 2 miles from my apt.

We've been to the park before but never the pool. It was fine. it wasn't packed and they even had a diving board. We had a great time. The staff was very friendly. The water wasn't that cold and the pool wasn't crowded. Plenty areas to set up your chairs and sit down in the shade too.

I joined the LA Leggers for the 2019-2020 marathon training season, making the switch after being a…read morelong-time member of another training program.  The LA Leggers "clubhouse" is inside the historic Santa Monica Camera Obscura building overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Palisades Park near the world-famous Santa Monica Pier.  It is not a bad place to start your Saturday long run. The Leggers organization celebrated their 30-year anniversary during the 2019-2020 season and do they have their stuff down.  The weekly runs for each pace group are led by "Mentors".  There are 15+ groups which run and run/walk at different paces.  There are several walking groups as well. The LA Leggers offer something for everyone of all fitness levels who want to put in the work to become a "Marathoner".   Membership in the LA Leggers is for one year of weekly runs, although the marathon training season begins in late summer, culminating with the LA Marathon in March.  LA Leggers is a great organization and I recommend.   Weekly group runs have been suspended due to the pandemic and replaced with weekly Zoom meetings in order to provide support to the members.

But it's true just the same: I'm not an athlete. I'm a fat, slow, aging couch potato with big dreams. One of my big dreams is to do an Ironman some day...but boy, that means I have to a MARATHON. Ugh. My least favorite thing: running. Enter the LA Leggers. There are several big running groups out and about on the west side, including the HUGE one affiliated with the LA Marathon itself. I've run into that group a few times down on the beach, yelling out run chants like Army bootcamp and taking up the entire path. They look sweaty, tired and disgruntled. But every time I'd seen the LA Leggers groups running, people are laughing, smiling, enjoying the day and making running look - dare I say it? - FUN. What? Crazy talk! I joined last year and trained for the 2009 LA Marathon. Injury in November, bad sickness in December and all the crazy LAM date juggling and I was out for the season in January. August came around and I signed up for the 2010 season, determined to try again. As a non-athlete, it's been wonderful to find a "running" club as awesome as the LA Leggers. Encouraging, well-structured mentoring programs and terrific leadership combined with a truly GOOD group of people = wanting to show up and do the training every single weekend no matter how early. You make friends out there with people you would never meet otherwise, and the energy is always up up up. They welcome a wide spread of pace groups (I am in the slowest, 20 minute miles walking pace and YES, they do have walker programs!). I'm looking forward to completing my very first marathon in March, proudly wearing the Leggers name! GO LEGGERS! (And if you needed one more reason to join next year, the LA Leggers were just voted Best Running Club in LA by Competitor Magazine. All that for less than $75 bucks for an entire season! Almost unbelievable!)

I am currently taking a swimming class here in the evenings and the instructors are great! One thing to note: the class right before ours is little kids (6-7 yrs old), get there at the right time (10 minutes before your class) or the locker room will be filled with about 20 girls screaming and laughing and occupying your space. :) Walking in to the pool and walk straight into the locker room. There's a lifeguard at the desk, they can issue you a towel; I bring my own. The locker room: It's small, mostly assigned lockers, there are a few empty ones. I mainly just bring my bag out with me where I can keep an eye on it during class. There are about 3 bathroom stall, 3 shower stalls (no curtain) and no hair dryer nor large mirrors. If you come here before work, be prepared. There is a bathing suit dryer that's somewhat helpful. Theses are just things you find at a gym. Overall I really like this pool!

Tucked on the side of Kaufman (at one point, the "Women's Gym") on North Campus right by the Sunset/Westwood Plaza turnaround and Lot 4, North Pool is the older, smaller pool versus SAC or the other swim pools available to those with a UCLA Recreation membership, but it has it's own charm and group of regulars. Lots of sunshine, even in the winter months, and a lot more mellow than other open rec spots. Bring a towel; towel service is phasing out/almost gone at this point.

Julie had great 'eyes' and pointed out all of the endemic sea life. She managed the group of 6 appropriately and safely (but not overbearingly). The boat only had 6 divers which was really awesome. Drake made pizza for lunch which was to die for. He is a 3rd generation boat captain and really seems to enjoy his job. This was my 2nd trip with Fathom Five and I can recommend them unhesitatingly.

The group meets on the track at…read moreSanta Monica College every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. There is a workout for beginning runners, new to track, usually 400m repeats. The majority of members are in the "main" workout, which varies in content every week, always totaling 3 miles on the track. For example, 3 x 1600m or 6 x 800m. Runners are split into groups based on speed. The group also meets for a weekly run off the track, usually from the Brentwood Coffee Bean on Saturdays at 6:45 a.m., for distances varying from 5 - 20 miles. Great for runners training for 5K, 10K, half-marathon and marathon distances.
