I rarely go to Manila, so when I see a new food concept or establishment I make sure to sample it. One kiosk that stood out during my last prowl at Rob's Place was Occubite Muffins & Coffee, located in front of the mall supermarket.
What caught my attention was the kiosk's trendy and whimsical design and color scheme. Also, I was intrigued that instead of cupcakes, they call their goodies muffins -- although the pastries really looked like miniature cupcakes to me. Next, I dig the fun and unique monikers they give each variant of muffin even if I don't really understand why the hazelnut muffin is called Jack Sparrow or why the chocolate walnut is named Da Vinci. Above all, they claim their products have less sugar and are low-fat.
I bought a box of six muffins and asked the staff to choose for me. I really had no idea which variants sell best. When I went home, I was pleased that the muffins were still intact so I was able to take a good picture of the goodies.
My verdict? I say yes to muffins and Occubite! I couldn't exactly tell if the muffins were indeed low-fat and less in sugar, but I observed the icing on each piece was not excessively sweet. Lastly, the muffins were denser and a bit drier in texture when compared to ordinary cupcakes. read more
