Working with Kurt Thompson on an addition to our home was a great experience in every respect--his prices were fair and the quality of his work was excellent. Kurt has built many homes in Kayenta and so is very familiar with all of the expectations and rules that maintain the aesthetic integrity of the community. For example, he took on details that needed attention, such as the rims of patio ceiling lights that needed to be painted to match the exterior and did the painting himself. He was easy to talk to and kept us updated on the project daily. We would work with him again in a heartbeat. read more

Working with Kurt Thompson of Obsidian Construction at my home in Kayenta was an exceptional experience in every way. Not only did he have the winning bid for our project, at 20% below the competition, but he was on top of every step, consulting with us daily to make sure we knew where things stood in the morning, again in the afternoon and what was on tap for the following day. We found Kurt through a neighbor who reached out to us to share his experience, praising Kurt for his knowledge and attention to detail. Our experience was the same. Kurt was on the job constantly, supervising the details of excavation, roofing, stucco, and paint subcontractors as well as doing a tremendous amount of the framing himself and all of the rock wall construction. He was constantly in touch, either here or on the phone and we enjoyed daily conversations with him. While we didn't know Covid was coming when we first got started, the fact that he ordered the windows and doors as soon as the contract was signed was fortuitous. The job might have been delayed for months if he had not been so on top of the planning. We paid him in draws following each inspection. His bid included allowances and contingencies for things that needed to be bought as the project moved forward. In the end, there were no overruns and he returned the contingency. I found his costs to be reasonable and economical. The few changes orders that we requested--really add-ons, were also extremely reasonable, particularly as I have found that most contractors severely overcharge at those moments. One add-on was the construction of a sauna, which I had planned to do myself, although it would have taken me weeks. Kurt did a beautiful job in short order, paying careful attention to detail, finding the tongue and groove red cedar that I wanted and carefully sanding and fitting each piece. While I considered buying a sauna kit, Kurt created a custom sauna that fit exactly in the space available and was substantially more economical. Another example of his attention to detail was that he noticed that the hinges and hardware on the closet doors did not match that on the front doors, and so he removed and replaced the hardware to match. Overall, Kurt was knowledgeable, a good communicator, a tireless worker, fair and friendly. He even went out of his way to provide little courtesies, unexpected and unasked, like bringing in our trash cans on Monday mornings and bringing the newspapers up to our porch from the driveway so that they wouldn't get run over by the construction crew. We enjoyed having him around, are thrilled with the careful results of his work, and are happy to recommend him without reservation. read more

Kurt Thompson as a general contractor is one of the most brilliant contractors I have ever had the pleasure to work with. I have been in the tile business for 38 years. I'm now retiring and Kyle and Kristy Myers was one of the last jobs I did for Obsidian Construction, there was a load of confusion on that job, but it didn't not come from Kurt, it was all created by Kristy and Kyle, the home owners. They asked a standard bid and continually upgraded without your permission or even consulting with you, you had to discover it on your own. Don't get me wrong, they were nice to me, as long as I allowed 5 changes a day, otherwise I was on their gossip list. They would be extremely nice to you if you let them badmouth other subs and especially Kurt to you and others, as I overheard their conversations even with complete strangers, talking bad about other people seem to be their pastime. Their house turned out beautiful for the budget they had even though they went $250,000 over budget, as they were the ones who let me know this... they cried, and cried over the price of the labor as they themselves upgraded everything. I feel bad about this situation but I have to side by Kurt because I personally witnessed much of Kristy Meyers obsession with increasing her high end products in her home while expecting our labor prices to go down to finance it. read more

Kurt Thompson with Obsidian Construction LLC Does not take responsibility for his negligent actions. Did not bid our home construction even close to what it ended up costing. He prefers to work hourly and convinces you to do this, as well as talks you into helping him, and says it will save you money but you will not. He also stated he had crews for his framing and cement work and it was mostly one guy so job was not time efficient. Always get a firm bid in writing for all subs and his framing and concrete before you start or hire him. Our home was Underbid by 20%, in which we almost lost everything we put into it (over half a million down). If we didn't step in and do so much work ourselves to bail us out of this situation we really would have just lost everything as he did not take responsibility as a contractor should have. He was in charge of our builder construction loan in which he put us in a huge financial bind as he guessed on a lot of his bids rather than obtaining proper bids, which ended up coming in way too short (especially the hours and cost on his own framing and cement work estimate bids). He made sure he got paid, but we did not get several reimbursements which we had a budget for and ended up paying for out of our pocket. When it came down to the end our $10,000 appliance budget got turned into $0, our flooring budget turned to $0 as well, he took away our $2500 tile materials budget which we got $0, and $2500 glass around the shower doors $0 again, turrets got cut (partial masonry some framing and roofing which was a loss of thousands from our allowance), painting was a $12,000 budget, which ended up being about half that, little budget for finish work didn't even pay for product alone yet no labor which we only got $1600 when our original budget was $5000 in this category, and $0 exterior cement budget when this was on the plans and required by code, and we did our own HVAC in which we never got our credit for $8000 left in that budget, also did our own facia and soffit with $0 budget as it was forgotten in bid. We only had $4000 in upgrades on the loan that we authorized, which is certainly covered by the thousands in allowances that were lost or sweet equity savings so it was not us that sank the loan. We honestly still don't know where our money all went, But we do know that he got paid first. We had to do all the above services (cost and labor) on our own to obtain our permit while he ended up leaving us to work elsewhere in Colorado. We did not see him for the last couple months before we obtained occupancy. House still isn't finished to plans. He doesn't build your house to plan anyway. He took off one of our turrets and installed a rectangular window instead of an arched one because he said it would look better without them even after we told him we still wanted them. I tried very hard to give him the benefit of the doubt at all times by cordially helping him along the way. Including 6 weeks of framing (my family had to help raise heavy garage trusses), lots of rebar, fixing mistakes, cleanup of subs, etc. In the long run he doesn't care about the customer, even when it was the right thing to do, only thing he cares about is getting paid. On several occasions he threatened us, and he fell short of his verbal agreements and promises. Our family is extremely hurt by what he's done to us. We also felt his service to be the worst customer service we ever received. He just treated us so poorly. My wife would try to talk to him and he would just turn on his saw, or he would always just walk away. He puts his subs before his customers by paying them premiums and sometimes more to keep a good relationship (direct quote from him) and he makes you do a lot of the contracting as he's always in a hurry to get out. His way of contracting is making a few phone calls. He did not follow up with some of the subs that we had issues with as he always had an excuse, so we ended up just fixing a lot of their work on our own. We suffered wall damage, floor damage, front door damage, roof tile damages, excavating drainage issues, and other tedious things due to poor work service or damage by contractor and/or subs. We've worked with a half a dozen general contractors in the past, but Kurt is absolutely the worst by far with customer service, money management, and overall management for a new construction project. We do appreciate everything that did go right but felt a one star rating was sufficient for the extreme damage we suffered. Please note: This is a very honest review. It is not written to hurt Obsidian Construction, but rather to warn other potential customers of the experience we had with him on our home.
