Previously, I had been to Obici for my and my children's medical issues, and I didn't really know about HMC until now. When I arrived, I was given a buzzer and told to wait in the lobby. The lobby area is beautiful--bright and comfortable. Looking out the window I could see the pond, fountain and trees. It was so peaceful and relaxing. I waited about 15 minutes before my buzzer went off. I then went to registration and it took about 10 minutes. Afterwards, I had to go sit back in the lobby, but I needed to use the restroom, and when I came back out, my buzzer was going off again. That was fast! The procedure (EKG) was quick and the nurse who took care of me was very nice. We chatted and I felt very at ease with her. All of the staff were nice but she was exceptionally good at her job. Overall, my time at HMC took about 45 minutes and I was impressed. I wish I had used this place instead of Obici for other instances in the past. This building is clean and so bright and cheery! I would definitely recommend HMC when you need medical care.

I recently visited Bon Secours Health…read moreMedical Center in Harbourview, Suffolk, Va. and was very disappointed with the lack of patient privacy during my visit. Due to ongoing renovations, patients were seated and treated in the hallway. While I understand that construction can create challenges, there was little to no effort made to maintain confidentiality. Doctors were openly discussing patients' medical conditions, concerns, and treatment plans within clear earshot of others. Sensitive health information should not be easily overheard in a public hallway setting. Is it not important that healthcare facilities have a responsibility to protect patient privacy, even during renovations. I hope the administration addresses this issue promptly to ensure patients feel safe, respected, and protected when receiving care.

The interior has been UPgraded in a major way. It looks like a different, star trek type of place. I was shocked at the sleek lines and new flow patterns. Very nice and accommodating for those with mobility and visual disabilities. TEN plus for the signage updates and seating! I got in and out rather quickly. I achieved my goal and leaving extremely pleased with myself and Obici Hospital.

The day nurse was a blond woman, approximately 5'4", and appeared to be between 20 to 30 years old. She did not introduce herself. After I acknowledged the night nurse, she politely asked whether she could discuss my care with the day nurse. Following their brief discussion, the night nurse wished me well and left the room. One of the student nurses introduced herself, while the other remained quiet. The day nurse then told me that she would be giving me oral medication today. She did not formally introduce herself or ask about my condition, pain level, or how I was feeling. The student nurse asked about my current health status and pain level and then relayed that information to the day nurse, who appeared disengaged. The day nurse seemed to ignore those around her and responded in a manner that I perceived as aggressive and unkind. I requested to be discharged, and fortunately, the doctor agreed. I then requested pain medicine. The day nurse informed me that she would only be administering oral medication, and I told her that oral medication would be fine. She then began asking me several questions about my conversation with the doctor. I informed her that I would be leaving the hospital today. At that point, her demeanor appeared to change significantly. She smiled and appeared noticeably more cheerful. However, at no point did I feel that she showed concern for me as a patient or wished me well upon discharge. Instead, she handed me my discharge paperwork and said, "I will see you on the flip side." I understand that hospitals may be short-staffed and that nurses often work under difficult and demanding circumstances. However, I believe poor bedside manner and the mistreatment of patients or other staff members are unacceptable. When transportation arrived to take me out of the hospital, we had to locate the nurse so that she could sign my discharge paperwork. We found her at the nurses' station laughing and talking with another staff member. During that interaction, a staff member referred to her by a name (I guess everyone is aware of the behavior and no one has addressed it). Overall, I found this nurse's behavior to be dismissive, unkind, and lacking in professionalism and appropriate communication. My experience left me feeling that I was not treated with the compassion, respect, and consideration that a patient should reasonably expect while receiving care in a hospital.

The nurse assigned to us was cold, difficult to understand, and provided very little communication or clear instruction throughout the visit. After tests were performed, we were left waiting in the hallway with little to no updates. Staff would often walk away without answering questions or explaining what was happening next. The lack of communication was so poor that we found ourselves having to ask other staff members for information. We were even close to leaving before receiving discharge paperwork because no one followed up with us. This was especially disappointing because my wife and I had just found out that we're expecting a baby, and what should have been an important and emotional experience was overshadowed by unprofessional attitudes, racism as we are Hispanic American veterans and poor patient care. We understand that emergency departments can be busy, but basic communication, compassion, and professionalism should never be overlooked. Especially when there are 2 patients not a fully stocked ER. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and works to improve the patient experience for future families.

After years of dealing with it, seeking the benefits he deserves for his life-changing war-time injury, I am now covered by Champ VA and Medicare. When the government awards this coverage, they provide specific billing instructions to the patients' billing departments they work with. Some billing departments don't refer to the rules. They agree in accepting payment, they agree to accept it as "Payment-in-Full." Lakeview's billing department, in spite of repeated contacts, persists in an "illegal practice" called Balance Billing, i.e. adding to the bill after they are paid. Once I passed the background check, I was given a parking pass valid for the next few days. I parked in the parking garage as instructed by my nieces husband. On one of my visits, I walked through the oldest structure on campus which was the original hospital built in 1827. This is the oldest military hospital in the US. It still had the original stone exterior (outsise of original hospital) which had been closed in with hallways surrounding it. I checked out some cool paintings throughout the hospital. I learned a lot of history by reading the captions of the paintings. This biulding was turned into an administrative building. The campus was huge! HOWEVER, mind you I have a shattered pelvis and a hematoma the size of both of my 2 fists put together pressing heavily on said shattered pelvis whenever I sit or lay down. Also mind you the pain meds I was given weren't enough and I noted not only that to the nurse but also that my pain was at an 8/10. What do they do? Give me some Tylenol and told me to wait. I sat in my chair starting to get dizzy from the amount of pain I was feeling. Did I bring this up you might ask? yes, yes I did. What did they do? Get me some water and tell me to wait for the more critical patients To be treated before me because theres "not enough beds for everyone." No big deal, I get that. Someone could be dying, makes my injury look a lot less severe. That's fine, I'll wait. Not long after, the first bed opens up and they take a young woman with a SPRAINED FREAKING ANKLE BACK BEFORE ME. Don't go here. They clearly don't care about ANYONE'S health so if you care about yours, go somewhere else for help. These people are sick. For the purpose of keeping this review professional, frick every last one of them.
