I visited Obici's main building today and I was able to park close to the entrance. YES!!!! The receptionist helped us find our way to the doctor's office. The interior has been UPgraded in a major way. It looks like a different, star trek type of place. I was shocked at the sleek lines and new flow patterns. Very nice and accommodating for those with mobility and visual disabilities. TEN plus for the signage updates and seating! I got in and out rather quickly. I achieved my goal and leaving extremely pleased with myself and Obici Hospital. read more

I felt like I was in a fight for my life when I came to the ER here at Obici. But the staff did not miss a beat... From the check-in at the ER desk to the ER staff, to the admission floor right below ICU, my life was in their hands and they did not let me down! A couple of honorable mentions Caitlin my ER nurse is very professional, friendly, knowledgeable, and tentative. Thank you for your warm hands and caring heart while you attended to my needs during this very scary moment. Jessica "Army Strong", was my day nurse when I was admitted to the hospital. She explained every procedure and helped me with my concerns. In a freezing hospital room Jessica never denied me a warm blanket ( I'm up to seven). She was gentle and very apologetic when drawing blood and taking vitals. I could not have had a better nurse looking out for me... Until I met my night nurse Melody! Words can not describe her wisdom as a nurse. In fact, if her ID did not say nurse you would swear she was an MD! Melody's discernment was unreal, her ability to anticipate your needs was uncanny. Her attention to detail was unbelievable. The care she provided, and her ability to articulate what you are experiencing was so comforting. I never wrote a review on a hospital but when you have staff members like nurse Melody that show you she genuinely cares you must leave a review! There is so much that I can say positively about Nurse Melody but this review would be way too long. But I must mention how the other nurse staff has expressed the same sentiment. Nurse Melody called Nurse Jessica after her shift was over and checked in on me "during her personal time at home!" That is the kind of medical professionals you only see on T.V. (Gray Anatomy) I am feeling better and am very thankful for the medical staff here at Obici. I truly believe God orchestrated this whole encounter for my good. read more

The hospital where I gave birth to 2 babies and recently had an outpatient surgery. Great hospital. The nurses and staff here are all so friendly. When I had 2 c-section surgeries, the nurses and my doc was always checking on us to see if we needed anything and everyone I came into contact with was very friendly. Great bedside manners and always put me at ease. I was here recently for an outpatient surgery and hate being in hospitals and was not looking forward to my surgery. The nurse Brenda took me to the back to start prepping me. She was so friendly and made jokes to help me feel at ease and not scared. Wonderful bedside manners. She explained everything with what she's doing and the whole flow of what is going to happen. Great hospital!! read more

I feel badly after my last update, and my appointment this morning at Obici Hospital (OH). I still stand on my review based on my experience two years ago. However, today was my second mammogram here, and it would be wrong if I didn't give a shout out to the wonderful people who work at OH. I called yesterday to get an appointment for my mammogram, and they were easily able to fit me in today. I arrived at Registration, and was called by the staff less than five minutes later. The staff at Registration has always been friendly and courteous. I then went to Radiology, and needed to fill out a short form. When I returned my sheet, the technician called me immediately. I should mention that both waiting rooms were almost empty. Quiet for a Friday! We walked to the room where the mammogram would take place. The technician was very nice and kind. She wasn't the same woman as last time, but both were wonderful. When it comes to trying to be gentle about squishing boobs between plastic, these girls are the best! I think I was out of there in about 30 minutes start to finish--45 tops! I have never had a problem at OH when it comes to x-rays and mammograms. Radiology is efficient. Radiology gets 4 stars, but I can't give OH anything higher than a 3. read more

My mother was admitted in April she was transferred from another facility then transferred back. When she arrived back at the other hospital after being at obici for 5 days she smelled horrible. She was very sick not once did they offer to help her bathe give her a washcloth nothing. Then they transferred her back to the original hospital in the middle of the night leaving her phone behind. I would normally would have given one star hands down . but not today I had Mr.Warren he made me feel like he actually cared about what was happening and went out of his way to make me feel comfortable like he truly heard me( and he was not the pa or Md) he kept checking In on me and my husband to see did we need anything and kept us updated on everything that was happening on even bringing my sleeping husband coffee. it truly takes one person to change your experiences if they had a staff of warrens it would be a lot better knowing someone cares makes a big difference. Obicii hospital in Suffolk VA on Godwin (life Safety). My wife went to a Ortho Appt on 28 July 2023 after waiting a month for an Ortho Appt (DR. Manish Patel). Checked at 130 pm for a 150 pm appt. She departed at 305 pm for not being seen (not even a nurse check in) No seats to sit in. patients stacked in the hallway and blocking the exit ! No Ortho Doc can see a patient every 15 minutes. Contacted the Obicii patient advocate and they sent me a email with contact info. Thank you Patient Advocate! This needs to be fixed as it is a Life Safety Issue and a Patien Safety Issue for the Hospital. You can not stack Patients in the hallway without Joint Commission approval and SOC documentation. read more

The wait in the ER is outrageous. I understand that they are busy, but they have to be acutely working to be busy. Tons of employees standing around talking about what they make money wise, joking and playing like little kids. You give blood samples to one person and the next comes in saying they don't know where it is. It's a mess, it's honestly terrify knowing these people are the one responsible for telling you what's wrong with you. read more

This is strictly a review for the Labor & Delivery ward in the Women's Center wing. I actually did not end up laboring at the hospital. I did go through transition and delivery though. I arrived "full" and so I was unable to have any pain medication. The nurses for this first step were professional and able to deal with an uncomfortable patient such as myself. They were able to coach me on pushing along with my OB and my husband and because of them, I had the baby out in 20 minutes. The reviewer before me mentioned her displeasure at having to take a shower right after delivery when all she wanted to do was sleep. At the time of the birth, I had been awake a full 28 hours as I was getting ready to go to bed when contractions started for me. (Four hours later, I gave birth.) They waited about 90 minutes but I too had to get up to shower and empty my bladder after giving birth and yes I was tired but it was needed and worth it. Childbirth is bloody and messy and personally, I'd rather be moved to the postpartum room feeling clean and refreshed than gross and not having a good gauge point for where I am on the recovery scale. I ended up staying 3 days and 2 nights. The postpartum rooms in the Women's Center are private and family oriented. My husband was able to stay in the room with me the entire stay. My newborn was able to stay with me as long as I wanted. We enjoyed a special new parents meal on day two. Final day, I was discharged before Noon. The nursing staff were nice and helpful. I always knew who my baby's nurse was and I did see at least two doctors including my own. The only complaint I do have is with the lady doing intake at the front desk of the labor and delivery ward that night. She saw that I was pretty much incapable of answering questions or filling out forms but insisted that I had to. She wouldn't let my husband and the father of my baby fill out my forms despite his having my legal written permission to do so. She literally did not care at all about my disposition which tells me she's been there too long. No empathy or understanding, period. Despite the horrible woman on the overnight shift, I would most definitely return here should I ever have another baby. read more

Dangerous Experience! Went to the ER for a chest cold, sinus infection. No fever. Just a cold that I've been passing back & forth with my 2yr old and could not get an appointment with my Primary Doc. I was taken back to sit in the Hallway. There were plenty of rooms but no problem, although no privacy for patients. I could overhear the patient beside me just got out of the hospital for COVID, still sick and needing care. I needed blood work, my issues could be fluid on my heart. The Gentlemen seated in front of me in the hall tested Positive for Covid. The Doctor joked with the man that he probably caught it in the ER Waiting area! My heart goes out to him, but could one of us go to a room? Or could I wait in my car? I'm negative in the same room with 2 patients who just tested Positive. I need to get home to my 2yr old. I was told, No & I need to sit there and wait an hour for bloodwork. I left the ER without treatment because it doesn't make sense to sit there until I catch Covid. This was Monday, today I received a Bill for over $4,000.00. It included an IV and treatments that I never received. Still needing bloodwork and a EKG, I have insurance but will wait for an appointment. read more

I've heard a lot of bad things in the past about Obici & have never been there until yesterday. I went in with an irregular heartbeat & they got me right in for an EKG & bloodwork. I did have to sit in the waiting room for about an hour to wait for a room but I guess that's to be expected? My nurse, Daniel was AMAZING. He took the time to explain what was happening my whole visit & relaxed me as much as he could. read more

This review is based solely on my experience with Labor and delivery. I've been to L&D a few times during my pregnancy but this time was different. I was five weeks early and didn't think my water had broken but it had. From the time they told me I would be having my baby five weeks early and delivering that day.......I received the best support, attention, care and professionalism ever. I'm not sure how they could have possibly hired the most talented staff around but they were the absolute best. From the Dr who delivered my baby, the nurses that took care of me, the baby nurses who took care Of my baby, the staff who brought my meals, the janitorial staff and everyone in between... They made me feel comfortable and cared for. I left the hospital with a happy, healthy baby and I am grateful for that. read more

The hospital staff Doctors and Nurses in Medical are the best. The Emergency Room is a totally different issue and I wold recommend going somewhere else like Sentara Bell Harbour and then transport to Obici if heeded. ER is unorganized and painfully slow. Expect 5-7 hours if they get busy. Once admitted the best hospital staff and nurses treat you with respect and kindness. They go out of their way to make sure patients are comfortable. read more

The staff are very friendly to the patients and family and I'd rate their bedside manner with high marks. Coming for a scheduled outpatient procedure and waiting 3.5 hours and never being told that they were running behind was unacceptable, particularly for an elderly patient. In the future, just take the time to stop in and say we are running behind or we have had an emergency and there will be an extended wait time before we can get to you. It would be considerate to just let the patient and families know. An anesthesiologist came in and said they would come right back and it was over 2 hours before they came back. read more

I was in severe pain on my way home from a trip and we had to stop at sentara obici ER as it was the closest hospital to ya. I live 30 minutes away and there was no way I could have made it. The staff was amazing! Everyone was caring and compassionate. I never felt like an inconvenience. I was terrified because my doctor is associated with a different hospital and they wanted to do emergency surgery. Dr. King performed emergency small bowel surgery and was knowledgeable and friendly about the whole process. He made me and my family feel very comfortable. After that the nursing staff took care of me over the next few days and again treated me very well! I have been in many hospitals with my medical condition and this one was by far the best experience I have had! read more

Just pathetic.over four hours and we haven't seen a doctor. Blood test and xrays indicate blood clots. We have been waiting 3 hours for an ultrasound. They just came and told us there is only one person in the whole hospital that can do an ultrasound. Really???? Lesson learned. We will never come to this under qualified, lousy hospital again!!! Alright, I've got another emergency room to rate. Last night, around 7:30, I sliced my index finger on a can of Amy's Organic Refried Beans. Now, we've been tempting fate wit our crappy can-opener that is about 10 years old. I finally got hurt. I don't handle my own blood really well so when I saw blood (lots & lots of blood), I just ran out of the kitchen through the living room, through our bedroom, and into our bathroom yelling, "BRING SOME PAPER TOWELS!!!!" Dearest hubby had to, of course, come look at my finger before bothering to get off the phone and bring me some dang paper towels. I would have tolerated it better had he not said, "you're getting blood everywhere." Really, genius? BRING ME SOME PAPER TOWELS!!! Men. I was finally able to get a bandaid on & then I thoroughly wrapped my finger in gauze - just in case. I skedaddled off to the Obici ER - thankfully it's very close & thankfully I had only had one glass of wine at this point. I checked in at the desk. The lady there was very pleasant. Almost as soon as I had checked in, I was called into triage. I was very pleased to be called into triage so rapidly - this bodes well for my next major asthma attack! Here's where I had to take off a star & a half. I was there for over 3 hours before I was called to the back. It was another hour before I got my 3 stitches - which took about 15 minutes. I wasn't dying or in respiratory distress, so it's not too huge of a deal - just a forewarning. However, the entire staff was pleasant, everything was clean (I noticed no foul or strongly antiseptic odors), and for a late night that was running behind, everyone seemed to keep their senses of humor. read more

I am strictly rating the outpatient side of Obici. After experiencing DePaul on Granby Street in Norfolk, Obici is like the Mayo Clinic. We had outpatient surgery done and it was refreshing to have a helpful staff, clean restrooms, nice waiting area with free refreshments, and an extremely clean room. The nurses were extremely nice and helpful. In addition, I liked how they called me over the phone in the waiting room to inform me how my wife was doing. Nice touch. Plenty of parking and the roundabout was easy to pick up my wife. Overall, good as could be expected for a hospital visit. read more

Been here way to many times to get sewed up bones set....had head sewed several times,jaw sewed,foot,hand,arm,leg and a few more areas lol...I was a rough teen...same hospital that my pop passed away in 95,hope they have gotten faster on intake,use to be forever to be seen. read more

I used to actually think highly of this hospital until my last visit on Friday June 22nd I got to the er approximately around 10:30am after this experience I am terrified to ever enter any hospital by myself again! They treated me like I was lower than a piece of garbage on the side of the road! First off they put me in this room with five green chairs where there was one guy in there on an IV who seemed to be high out of his mind. Which I for one was taken back as to why I was even in this type of room to begin with! I was severely severely dehydrated since I had been throwing up nonstop for over two days and had lost 6lbs from it. I asked to be put on an iv of fluids which they completely ignored. The lady that drew my blood I warned her ahead of time that I have a tendency to pass out her first comment was "well this needle is smaller than what your probably used to"! Not too sure what she was trying to hint to but I did not appreciate it in the least. Which by the way I would like to add I have never or would never shoot up any types of drugs! And I've never been on drugs ever in my life! But then she went onto say "you will be fine" not taking the usual precautions every other nurse has taken and lay me back. She drew my blood and I said to her "Im going to pass out." Her comment again was "you will be fine." When I finally came to she was just sitting there minding her business like nothing had happened still not even bothering to lay me back. So I immediately said at this point "I want to go home." Her response was you will when we are done with you." And so I said "You need to atleast lay me back." And she rolled her eyes completely annoyed and said "fine just tell me when to stop." Slowly reclining the chair. Then said annoyed "is this far enough?!?" I said "no keep going." Until it was all the way reclined. Thats when the terrifying part happened. My hands proceeded to completely cramp up to the point I could not move them at all they where balled up and my feet did the same and I could barely speak. I called out to her in the hallway begging her to help me because at this point I was terrified and had no idea what was happening to me. She looked back at me obviously annoyed and said "you're fine you're giving yourself an anxiety attack just calm down." Then proceeded to just walk away. I was laying there could not move crying with sweat rolling down my face. I kept begging everyone that walked by for help and everyone that walked by just looked at me and kept walking. Somehow I managed to be able to call my mother and told her to get here asap. She got there the lady at the front desk tried to look me up and couldn't even find me in the system to her knowledge she thought I was still being transported by ambulance. My mom found her way back to me the nurse barged in telling my mom she couldn't be in that room where my mom also noticed how unsanitary that room was and how poorly they where treating me and how badly I needed help and no one was willing to help me. So she helped me up where the nurse proceeded to insist she was trying to "help me." So when my mom called her out on the lack of help she wasn't giving me the nurse stormed out saying "she wasn't going to deal with this crap." And as we were leaving she yelled in our direction "HAVE A NICE DAY!" I have never been so terrified or felt so helpless in a hospital in my life!!!! I am so disgusted with the lack of care and concern from this hospital I will never ever return there again or let any family member go there and Im not going to stop until this is heard by as many people as possible! NO ONE DESERVES TO BE TREATED THIS WAY!!!!!!! read more

My 82 year old father was admitted due to pneumonia. From the second he was admitted the staff was nothing but professional, caring and supportive. They made it seem as if we were the only ones on the unit. He has dementia and kept taking off his oxygen so they provided distractions for him without making him or us feel bad. They were willing to think outside of the box to help my father be less anxious, confused and scared without resorting to medication. The dietary aide even went above and beyond for him. She learned that his favorite flavor of ice cream and provided him with milk shakes in that flavor since they did not have the flavor in ice cream. She also made sure that when he had mashed potatoes she put the gravy on the side to make it easier and less messy for him to eat as she saw that his hands were unsteady. It was all the little things that they did that made this stay as pleasurable as possible. I used the call button twice and each time they responded immediately. But most times before I could even get the thought out to call them and ask for something they were there with it. I will only use this hospital from now on for my father. And there are hospitals that are much closer but I will not go to them now that I found this gem of a place. read more

i understand that due to the virus it has made things difficult. i also understand that some patients need treatment first. but it shouldn't take 3 hours to get ex rays and a breathing treatment done just because you don't want to open a room up to perform it. i wouldn't recommend coming here unless you absolutely have to. read more

I took my elderly mother to emergency room for pain and inability to move arm. She had major surgery 3 months before. They didn't do any vitals but put someone else's in her records. When it came time to be discharged, a new nurse came on. When I told her that no vitals were taken and that the information on my mother was incorrect. She called security and said she felt threatened. This was a false statement no one yelled or used profanity. In fact I didn't say two sentences to her. But I was told I broke the law because I read her screen. Well at least someone read it. My suggestion is go somewhere else. They were suppose to have done an investigation. But you can figure who side they took. Very incompetent. read more

I can't speak to the Emergency Room, but I had a baby here and their OB dept is not where you want to be going through the labor experience. From beginning to end, things were unclear and disorganized, the nurses were ditzy and pretty useless, and looking around, no other couples there were happy or looking like they were having the experience they envisioned either. I've spoken to another couple who had their baby a few weeks after me and she almost mirrors her experience exactly to mine. This is not the hospital where you can go in and have your "birth plan" the way you had envisioned: walking the halls, serene music, an exercise ball, a hep lock for freedom (I actually ASKED for the hep lock and they refused, even though the IV wasn't needed for the entire day), and helpful/encouraging staff; it was generally just a very industrial, cold birth. Everyone I talk to who delivered here say ordering the epidural takes SO LONG (even in the throes of labor) and the behavior of the anesthesiologists are always very rude/patronizing. In my case, they ordered the epidural for me around 5:45pm and the anesthesiologist didn't show until 8pm. I happen to know they have some rule that requires them to show up within the hour and that was absolutely not the case, but what can you do when you're lying there writhing in pain? Not much. Then when he did show up, he was giving some tutorial to like a student anesthesiologist and moving and speaking very slow and methodically, so as not to confuse the student, and giving him pop quizzes as he WAITED to administer to me. F the student, GIVE ME MY EPIDURAL. I mean, are you serious? I literally gave birth around a half hour later, rendering the epidural moot because he took so long to respond to the call and administer it in the first place that it had no time to kick in. The nurses wouldn't let me position myself how I wanted to during labor and wouldn't even give me the "push bar" and were holding my calf or somewhere ineffective during the pushing. One of them even kept yelling at me not to push when it was clear I was not controlling anything and finally my doctor told her to knock it off and told me it was fine to push and that this was HAPPENING. If the nurses had just stayed calm and not gotten impatient, I believe my entire birth wouldn't have been as chaotic since they were feeding me bad energy the entire time.Then they kept coming in every 15 minutes during our entire stay (and waking us up!) for the dumbest of things, made us move rooms and had me take a shower at 1am after I had just given birth when all I wanted to do was sleep! One of them even butchered my arm trying to find the vein for the IV (I hear this happens a lot there), and the checkout process was horrendous...we didn't get out of there until 4pm on Saturday when we were scheduled to leave at 11am. And I'm not even going to mention the food. It was just a total nightmare. The bad thing is that most of the doctors in Suffolk only deliver at Obici but in the future I will make sure to find a practice that delivers anywhere but here (I believe Riverside in Newport News or Chesapeake General are the next closest hospitals OB dept's). Initially I had been impressed with Obici since its a newer hospital but you can't really do anything about an incompetent staff and anesthesiologists with attitudes. I would absolutely think twice about delivering here and instead determining if your doctor can deliver at another adjacent hospital with an OB dept. read more

I delivered my first child at Obici in 2013 and the doctors and nurses were outstanding. The nurse who was with me the entire time through labor, delivery and even "clean up" was amazing and very positive. I could not have asked for a better experience. I was trying to go through the whole process without pain medication but at the last minute I decided I wanted to have an epidural and I was able to get one. 10 minutes later I delivered my baby girl. There were at least 8 other babies born that day so I know the OB ward was busy but I still felt like I was the only one delivering that day. I am about to have my second baby and I will be going back to Obici to deliver. Thank you Obici Hospital in Suffolk. read more

Worst experience ever - battered and bruised after routine screening endoscopy in an athletic professional. Beware of those who identify as "endo assistants" with no first name given - feel like something happened during the 20ish mins of Propofol to cause blunt force trauma injuries (bruising and petechial hemorrhages). When I inquired as to what happened (an incident report in med record?), was told "those things happen," and you are doing the right thing, "seeking further medical care with your PCP." Also creepy that I signed two more "informed consents" on the endo table and have no idea what I signed. The endo nurse manager when I discuss these things tells me to "rise above this." Endoscopist (think Slumdog Millionaire who went to medical school from high school in his native land) gives me a pat and jog by "normal report" on the bedrail in the PACU and gives a complete with endo photos and embellished postop report (complete with past medical history that was inaccurate) to my husband in holding area. Must be a cultural thing with women and Obici stands behind this - that it was perfectly logical to exclude me from my own endo photos or a full report of my own health. Too late for me.....but anyone doing their own research, I share my experience. I should have known better!!!!! (BTW the practice emailed me the preop. instructions of another patient complete with name, dates, times and pharmacy....that was the first clue!) read more
