What is it about this place that drives me ten more kilometres away from my route than I would otherwise? Well, there are a mountain of reasons for anyone in need of anything middle eastern. Aisles of spices, sugary treats, ingredients of the Middle East. That is only half the story. This place also have, tangine dishes, kebabs, rice dishes, pizzas, breads, coffee, tea and is oh so different than your average joe restaurant. Going to this place will take you to the land of desert culture, and thousands of years of experimentations and evolutions of food. There are staples of food that came to the middle east (potatoes) with globalisation and became part of those cultures and other ingredients that were natural to this place. After hearing of this place for a few years now, I decided to venture in. Clearly with signs out the front stating that Oasis Parking available at rear indicated this place gets busy. Upon walking in, table real estate is at a premium, so don't come alone. Get a seat, and then check out the menu. Oasis Bakery certainly has a cosmopolitan vibe to it, and is not shying away from its Lebanese roots. The breakfast menu is well varied but not extensive, so one does not stare at the options for ages in an indecisive way. Passing the open fridge for help yourself to beverages (including ciders) which at 9:30am on a Sunday I refrained. Place the order and received an electronic buzzer which kindly notified me of when my coffee and breakfast was ready for collection. Service was very friendly, food ready in a timely manner and tasting amazing, it is no wonder the Oasis Bakery has such a brilliant reputation in Melbourne's south eastern suburbs and is highly recommended. I haven't eaten here, but been dragged by my mother for groceries. Needless to say, she'll need to drag me no more. Great range of spices, herbs, health food, everything (with a Middle Eastern bias). A little pricey, but convenient. And apparently always busy. Plenty of car parking, places to stand and eat, and sweet nothings to nibble on. The owners repackage bulk goods (fruits, nuts, LSA meal) with funny titbits - "Whatever you do, don't vote liberal!". Great to see some personality while supporting a clearly independent family owned store. Purchased items of note: delicious Collective black plum natural yogurt, bean-to-bar in Madagascar chocolate, lavender flowers for baking, and so many chia seeds they'll be coming out my ears. Other items of interests: ibriks, tortilla presses, EVERYTHING. Nearly as dangerous as Essential Ingredient for my wallet. read more

A friend put me onto this place as the best spice shop in Melb. I have to agree! I have found so many good quality spices here, some that are really hard to find too! Some of their stock includes pinto beans, (a staple in Mexican food!) quinoa, nuts, all the spices you could ever need in a decent quantity, (not like those dime bags of oregano from commercial grocery stores) dried Mexican chiles like anchos and guajillos, masa harina, polenta, lentils, tapatio, mole poblano, tortilla presses, felafel makers and so much more! I haven't even listed a fraction. They also have a bakery with some pretty decent macarons, baclava and petit fours. If all the food and spice shopping has made you peckish, why not stop for a rest in their food court for some kebbeh or the best shawarma rolls or plates in town! This place is very popular for a very good reason. They also do online shopping orders. 2013 update: I just wanted to update that since I've discovered I need to go gluten-free, we've discovered that Oasis has an aisle full of gluten-free items. Everything from gluten-free soy sauce (tamari) to various gluten free pastas, muesli, pancake, bread mixes and more. They also carry a range of gluten-free starches: potato, rice, tapioca, buckwheat, corn. Did you know primo chorizo has gluten syrup in it? I was outraged! Thankfully, Oasis carry a delicious brand of both hot and mild chorizo that's specifically listed as gluten free. We tried it. Better than primo. (Primo, you're now on my list!) Also, when we went to eat in the bakery, they have a range of gluten-free and when ordering, was advised/warned as to which plates not listed as gluten-free might still have traces of gluten in them. Such an unassuming street frontage hides one of the best places in Melbourne! Oasis Bakery features a Turkish grocery store and bakery and a large cafe space. I can't oversell how good the food is. The breakfast and sweets in particular are just amazing. The prices are reasonable and serves generous. It is always very busy (you'll soon see why) but the staff are friendly, helpful and efficient. My hot tips would be the breakfast tacos or blueberry hotcakes. Also make sure you swing past the cakes counter! read more

This place is just a gem. Years ago, it was a small-ish middle-eastern grocer with some tasty baked items, and it has built upon that (and the popularity they rightly earned) to become a juggernaut in an unassuming strip of shops. It's hard to decide if you should come hungry, because you'll spend way too much money on interesting ingredients and groceries in the shop, but you'll also be able to enjoy their great pastries fresh. It *IS* on the expensive side when it comes to the groceries, but they carry such a good range including a lot of exotic spices, chiles, obscure ingredients (if you're a fan of Ottolenghi you can stock up on pretty much everything you'll need here) and the quality is generally quite high, so it's not outrageous. read more

"....MIDDLE EASTERN BAKERY...OUT IN THE SOUTH-EAST...." Yesterday afternoon I visited the OASIS BAKERY on North Road, Murrumbeena... Well. it's a pretty spectacular place - not just a Bakery.. it's also a huge Gourmet Food Stockist including lots of Up-market Western and Organic products.. a Breakfast Cafe.. and an All-Day LICENSED Eatery.. with some serious technology happening - your own pager - Wow.. one of those that lights up like a Christmas tree when your hot food is ready for pick-up..!! I was there for about an hour - had a really good look.. and did a little bit of shopping - spent $80.. In their Grocery section I bought: 2 pkts Flat Pita Bread - $1.20 each - Was a little disappointed they didn't have it in wholemeal. 2 pkts Turkish Bread - $3.50 each - Was undercooked.. I had to bake it again when I got home. 1 box of 16 pieces of petite Half Moon Baklava - $16 per box - I have to say.. these were EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD..!! Would go back for these.. For the first time ever.. I saw Turkish Delight, studded with pistachios, and Pistachio Nougat.. in massive clumps.. like big wheels of Cheese.. thin slices being shaved off like the meat on a Gyros - I just had to have some of these.. 4 slices of each [these sweets are $50 kg] plus 2 slices of chocolate & coffee flavoured Halva [$30 kg] cost $35.. I must reveal.. the Sweets counter was choc-a-block full of Macaroons.. of every description and colour - I will say.. If I see another one of these.. I'm honestly going to......possibly be sick..!! In the Hot Foods section, I purchased: 1 x Big BLC Pizza - $6.90 - This was nice.. an interesting array of flavours, but only the size of a 'bread & butter' plate.. my teenage sons were not too impressed..! 1 x Spinach & Cheese Triangle - $4.30 - A bit mean with the filling.. and the size.. this was seriously tiny.. 1 x Mushroom Boom Boom - $5.50 - Yeah.. nice, but less pastry.. more filling.. would have been so much better.. 1 x Zaatar - $2.30 - Pizza base too dry.. topping nice but lacked usual piquancy.. not enough lemon juice.. I think? And just so so tiny.... Not particularly impressed that all were packed in separate 'flashy' boxes....!!!! This did nothing to mask the true quality of the product inside.. In fact.... this 'flashiness factor' is what possibly dis-enchanted me with the whole experience, yesterday - My Honest Opinion.... Focus on the 'product' NOT the 'trappings' then it might become a 'genuine foodies' hang-out... rather than the place the 'Fiat and Peugeot' owners might flock to when they need to impress dinner guests.... OVERALL FIRST IMPRESSION - TOO COMMERCIAL FOR MY TASTE.. TOO EXPENSIVE FOR MIDDLE EASTERN FOODSTUFFS which are notoriously such good 'value for money' and so much 'better' elsewhere....like out in the North-West.... BEST THING ABOUT THE PLACE - The beautiful big old chubby black and white mastiff tied up out the back.. got some gorgeous loving cuddles.. There is no doubt that this place has a wide array of groceries and baked good. Predominant middle eastern, and it is their specialty particularly in fresh foods, they also stock a wide variety of other ethnic foods including a great range of Mexican salsas. You will find all sorts of spices, grains, legumes and dried fruits as well as an expansive range of fresh dips, cheeses and baked goods. The choice can be overwhelming and indeed I found myself quickly filling my basket until I had a good look at the prices. This place has become quite commercial and the prices are more expensive than you would pay for similar products elsewhere. If you do have allergies or food sensitivities you will probably feel right at home here. Everything is organic and there are plenty of vegetarian, vegan, gluten and dairy free friendly ingredients. The deserts are super delicious as are the Falafel chips but at $10 a packet they're hard to justify. read more

My concern is only about the breakfast menu: as I don't eat eggs, why do I still have to pay full price, $17.95 for the Archie's Choice? And when I asked about exchanging the Haloumi ($5 extra) for eggs, I was told I would have to pay the additional price anyway, making the whole breakfast dish, minus eggs, @ $22.95. Outrageous! Was there another (basically) toast/veg option? No, 2 x eggs came with everything. Except if I wanted a purely fruit bowl. Incidentally, I'm not vegetarian or vegan. I just don't like eggs. In the relatively spice-free south, this little bit of Egypt by way of Sydney Road is a boon to the cook. What started chiefly as a tradie take-away joint and middle-eastern grocery is now just a few innovations short of being a one-stop culinary shop. Oh yes. The world's most beautiful woman and I ventured south today for family reasons. We wisely chose Oasis as our lunch spot. If this place was in inner Melbourne there'd be lines of people up and down the street and around the corner. In time, a flash git in cheesy Brooks Brothers clothing wearing a Rolex watch and white shoes would have franchised it and rapidly opened six new outlets in surrounding suburbs. Mercifully, that hasn't yet happened. The people of this area are indeed very fortunate. Oasis is a mighty place. The food is outstanding. Superlatives don't allow praise enough for my Lebanese breakfast with lamb. Every element of this dish works superbly. Beautiful baked eggs with meat. Gorgeous home made beans. Superbly spiced minced lamb. Excellent creamy cheese. Lovely tomatoes, no less than three types of tasty olives, wonderful crisp fresh cucumber and a delightful haloumi. The mildly spiced flavours in this meal, especially the beans and lamb, provide a rare breakfast treat. It's a seriously great meal, a tour de force. One of the best and most substantial breakfasts I've ever had. My companions' pizzas were lovely as well. Next time here I might try the tagine, a particular favorite dish of mine. It will be hard to choose though as the food on display here all looked fantastically good. This is a very well run business. Oasis is understandably popular. People of all sorts were coming and going regularly. The staff were all very good and knew the drill like clockwork. I liked the ordering system which buzzes you electronically when your meal is ready. Ours was ready in an impressively short time and dispensed with a cheery hello and goodbye. I'd give Oasis a 4.6 and look forward to a very early return visit. The good news is that a new restaurant is in the offing on the Mornington Peninsula. Something to look forward too. read more

Sauce Cheats, I used to enjoy the Falafel wraps. Recently I noticed the wraps were dry and had very little Tahini. So I subsequently ordered -very clearly - the falafel wrap where no Tahini would be put inside the wrap, but rather on the side. They took that order and my payment and I walked away noticing they had charged for extra tahini as a side $1 Next visit I clearly stated I did not want EXTRA tahini but rather the Tahini that would be put inside to be put in a dish. There was some resistance to this request but this time I was not ripped off. Subsequent visit , I asked for the same ( Tahini on the side) , making sure it was understood I was not ordering extra tahini. The check out lady seemed to hesitate and turned to a more Seniour woman behind the counter. That woman motioned to her jumpier how to enter it. I looked that lady in the eye and asked if she had entered it as an EXTRA charge. Guess what, she had done the sauce cheat move again! I pointed out this error and this seniour lady said that they HAD TOO process it this way. I quizzed her why I would be charged more given I was not asking for extra; only that the sauce they were going to put in thevwrap be put on the side. She dug her heals in and said it was extra "work" to satisfy this request. I asked if she thought it was worth speaking to the manager. Her response ; I am the manager. I said "I recognised the guy who was the manager" and she said that he was her husband. She said that it was a topic of discussion in a management meeting. I wonder if it was also a topic of discussion to put less Tahini in every wrap or to add a sneaky $1 charge to people who ask for their sauces on the side. Anyway, I said I think management needs to reconsider the policy. I voted with my feet and simply ate elsewhere along with a decision not to go back and to redirect any freinds suggestions of meeting there in the Future. If they (Top Management) are cutting corners in one area and think so little of keeping their customers, what else will it extend toward in what they serve and how they treat you. read more

You can get a dazzling array if hot food for breakfast, lunch and dinner and there's also cakes on offer. What's not to like about this Mecca of the south east! It's packed with people on weekends and their food is great. Wonderful range of produce, organic and health foods.
