I visited this DMV office for a vehicle title transfer and REAL ID transaction. Unfortunately, my experience was disappointing. I was assisted at Window 8 by a female employee (middle-aged, glasses, ponytail, wearing a black hat with cat ears) When reviewing my vehicle transfer paperwork, she noticed that I had entered $0.00 as the vehicle value. I attempted to explain why I had completed the form that way, but she repeatedly interrupted me and would not allow me to finish my explanation. Instead, she lectured me that nothing in life has a value of zero and used her rings as an example of items that have value. I felt talked down to rather than assisted. She then criticized me for forgetting to enter a date on the form. While I understand that forms must be completed correctly, the manner in which she addressed me felt unnecessarily harsh and dismissive. Later, after she instructed me to correct the paperwork, I informed her that I had already paid the $15 transfer fee. I mistakenly showed her the receipt she had just given me for a different DMV transaction. I felt that my concern was dismissed and that I was being blamed for a mistake before the situation was fully reviewed. Rather than simply clarifying the issue, she became visibly frustrated and questioned whether I was alright. She insisted that I was showing the wrong receipt and continued speaking to me in a condescending manner. A short time later, she discovered that the correct receipt was actually on her own desk. I felt embarrassed and spoken to in a disrespectful manner, particularly because the receipt was later found on her own desk. I believe customers should be treated with patience, respect, and professionalism. I left the interaction feeling embarrassed, dismissed, and uncomfortable asking questions about my transaction. On the other hand the lady who took my picture was completely the opposite who was very kind, and somehow made feel a little bit better about the whole interaction with the other employee. I will file a formal complaint regarding the way I was treated by this employee. read more

From the start she was giving me attitude and talking to me like I was dumb and wouldn't even consider trying to help me sort out my registration issue. She even got her coworker on Window 3 to try to tell me I didn't understand something, when that thing wasn't even the issue. Came at 7am and was already the 5th in line. They opened the office around 7:40am, which is 20 minutes earlier so that was nice. As mentioned in other reviews, the staff is efficient. However, some (especially this one guy) can come off really condescending and would raise his voice to tell you something you already know. I had to wait for a second in between him telling me multiple times "go to your application online" to let him know that my car is leased. Then he dropped his tone. I tried to scan a QR code he told me to scan, and it didn't take me to the right page either after physically showing him the web page on my phone. Finally, he told me to Google search "DMV Virtual Office," which finally took me to a form I had not seen before. I wish the DMV website could be a lot easier to navigate, especially for us who lease a vehicle and is unable to make name changes or address changes online. We could not find anywhere saying to visit the DMV Virtual Office (which is not to be confused with the DMV Online Services) until we had to wait in line for an hour, be yelled at, and then drive home without accomplishing anything there. Please give us some grace. A lot of times we are in situations that are confusing to us and we just want to get them resolved as much as DMV office workers do. read more

I came here on Christmas eve for an appointment I booked ahead of time. I had been nervous that it might be a busy day as a result, and when I was about to head out for the appointment, I was alarmed to see on the DMV's live wait times online that the Oakland main office had 35 mins wait for appointment holders and 85 mins wait for walk-ins when I headed, out vs. Oakland Coliseum DMV had only 5 mins wait for appointment holders and 15 mins wait for walk-ins. I ended up still going to the Oakland Claremont office as planned but was really nervous when I got in that I was going to have a much longer wait than expected. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised; I checked in around 11:25 which was 15 minutes early for the appointment start time, I got called up at 11:47am, and was finished at 12:08pm. When I first showed up, it wasn't very clear to me which counter to go to for check in. The employee who waved me over to check in was rather impatient and rude with me, acting like I was stupid (I'm not the best at reading unspoken social cues) and also telling me bluntly "I can't hear you" when I was trying to answer her questions. I am sympathetic that I personally wouldn't want to be working on Christmas eve, but I wish they were a little more mindful of their demeanor toward customers since I hadn't said or done anything rude. However the second person who helped me with the review and processing of my REAL ID application itself was much better, calmly let me know she was correcting my appointment type since it was booked as a renewal when it should've been a new REAL ID application, and patient and polite in demeanor. She also was friendly to me in wishing me a happy holidays at the end. There was a bit of a wait for the last step of taking a driver's license photo, the third person was more abrupt in her demeanor, and paused several times in our interaction to chat with coworkers, but other than that it was fine. I was surprised how easy it was to park at the DMV lot since when I read reviews ahead of time, it sounded like that's typically hard but maybe it was because it was around the holidays. This review is for one particularly idiotic, nasty DMV employee. It would be a two or three star if this was just another California DMV. I hope somebody in a supervisory role at this DMV sees it. I went in after having made an appointment, paid my fees, takien my test and filled in my application to replace my license with a Real ID. All done online. I arrived ahead of my appointment time and was directed to a fairly long and slow-moving line that snaked outside to the parking lot. That was the line for people with appointments. An even longer line was next to it for people without appointments. I waited almost an hour and then was called by the gentleman in the photograph. I have low expectations for the DMV. I know it's gonna take a while and they'll be at least one or two additional lines to wait on. But this DMV employee took it to new lows. He was sitting right next to the line, not at one of the usual windows, but at a rolling workstation that was up right next to the line He had a view of the line starting 2 or 3 feet from his chair. When he called me I went over and was stunned when he rudely said "why are you late for your appointment? " I said I had arrived early and had waited an hour on the line right next to us. He said, even more rudely, "what line? I don't know about any line." It was literally inches away from him. Having lived in California for a long time I have fairly low expectations of the DMV. They seem to find new ways to make you wait every time you arrive, but this was beyond ridiculous. Glenda the DMV examiner is a horrible and dumb employee. She failed my partner for driving "too slow" when there were lots of kids playing and he slowed down to 15 to TAKE TURNS. He was not driving below the speed limit except for on the turns. Avoid this lady at all costs. Just because you hate your job and your life doesn't mean you can take it out on everyone else! She was looking for reasons to fail him and also came up to our car window before the test and said "oh oops my bad" in a bitchy tone to me and my partner, acting like she had interrupted us doing something private when we were literally just talking to each other. This made me super uncomfortable and I felt like this was extremely unprofessional and weird. Even with the Coliseum DMV shut down, this office moved efficiently. Special shout out to the lady at the intake desk who greeted everyone nicely but properly dressed down the man who scoffed at waiting 2 hours for a Real ID ("Sir, Real IDs have been available since 2018") and the camera employee who said he'd try to give me a Real ID photo as nice as the one on my current license. 4 hr wait for Real ID. Once it was almost closing time, employees were finding any reason to deny people their application so they could finish through people quickly. Employee that I was assigned too did not accept a US passport as a valid ID (against DMV policy), printed up made up required documents that was required for another visit, and immediately called the next number before I could say anything. Just got a car, had to register it so went to the Claremont Ave DMV with no appointment. Walked up at 8:45 (they opened at 9:00) and there were probably 100+ people in line. I saw where I could scan a QR code for a walk in appointment, so I did that. Went in, and was out in 30 minutes. A great experience. The DMV Oakland on Claremont st. is a horror story. My wife and I went today (July 10, 2025) to apply for a Real ID. We had spent hours the previous day uploading the documents online via the DMV web site to get approval: U.S. Passport, Farmers Insurance document, and California Franchise tax document for our most recent tax year FY 2024 (with full social security number visible). After uploading these documents multiple times (because they 'weren't clear enough to view". NOTE: You must scan/upload the doc images to the DMV website at a MINIMUM 2 GB file-size. So, finally, after three hours at home finalizing our online application it worked out and we got a "GO" notice with a bar code and all. So today we go to the office as walk-ins (appointments are actually not available at this office for at least 6-8 weeks in advance). Then we waited three hours in the office until we finally got to see an agent. She didn't give a flying f**k about our "GO' document, she didn't even look at it (in other words DO NOT BOTHER TRYING TO APPLY FOR A REAL ID ONLINE! Complete waste of time. Just walk in with all the necessary docs, makes NO DIFFERENCE. Then this exceptionally snarky black lady began quite rudely to ask for our documents (completely ignoring our hard-fought for 'GO' doc we got online from DMV. She literally (with irritation) just pushed it back to us without even looking at it. So we handed over the hard copies we had in our possession and then she went after me for accompanying my wife who needed help in finishing the process since she has problems with official situations like this (trouble reading the info on the little tablet she had to sign). As I tried to help my wife with that the lady snapped at me "Don 't stand there, you're too near the camera!" (just 6" to the left of my wife so I could read the tablet and help my wife fill out all the check boxes. So I moved to my wife's right and then she says to me "Don't stand there!! You must stand directly behind your wife!". This with great animosity. So I stood directly behind my wife and had to awkwardly lean over her head to help finish the process. Eventually everything worked out (after the lady laboriously scanned all our docs--even though that was the reason we did this already online!!! Why bother with an online application. Then we spent 40 minute in a line to have my wife's photo taken. We arrived at 10:20 am and finally got out at 2:30 pm. One thing, I hate to say this, is it seems all the employees of this particular office are Black and they obviously have a problem with white people, especially middle-aged white men like me (I'm 70). They were a bit more polite to my Asian wife. I'm sure they just wanted to let me know what it used to be like to be a black in a situation like this a few decades ago. The last thing you want is someone getting mad because they think you are cutting them off in the long line. The worst experience I've ever had at any place of business or any government process. Gives off strong vibes of racism and discrimination against white people. First, not a single white person was present as an employee, how is this ok? That is not the bad part though. The bad part was the behavior of the lady who was at the service station. What a rude and horrible person. First, I get to the desk and she does not acknowledge my presence, but continues to gossip about her church with the lady at the next desk. Then when she finally acknowledges that I am there she talks with a mean and aggressive tone as if she is some sort of police officer who is dealing with a serious criminal. She continues to bark commands at me for no reason, an example of me being maybe two inches to the left of the plexi glass and she commands me to stay in front of the desk as if I went somewhere beyond the reasonable location. She proceed to talk to me as if I am a child when demanding the paper work that I have brought, being incredibly rude in the whole process. First of all just commanding me to give her my passport or birth certificate, she repeated this five times without me having a breath of explaining to her that I don't have it. I was not born in the US, so I brought my naturalization document which I carry in the folder. Before I could even tell her that I brought this (since it's an approved document for identification) she snaps at me saying that will work. As I attempt to take it out of the folder she repeats three times that she does not need the folder, I was never going to give the folder. Then there is a need to provide two pieces of mail that have my name and address, as I am attempting to get those from my folder she starts snapping about how she does not need a bunch of paperwork but just the two pieces, I was never going to give anything else. At this point in time I might have spoken two words, since she is so incredibly rude and unprofessional. Then there is the signing of the recites, as she give me the first one to sign and I start to sign it, she throws the second one right at where I am signing hitting the pen as I am signing and continues on with her business. At the end I had a question for her, the answer was very rude and demeaning, as you can guess by now. As soon as she ends her answer she say, "Now take your recites and go into the picture line." As I am standing in line for the picture and thinking about how rude she is, the next people come to her desk, so I want to see how she is dealing with them. She is kind and patient, and of course it's a black mom and her kid. I cannot help but to feel a sense of racism from this lady. I feel bad for this lady, obviously she has had a hard life that has filled her with hatred. One woman who was working at window 29 was very condescending and threw a paper back at me when it was not the right document she wanted which was a receipt that they kept from me. I didn't get it back until I was basically yelled at and had two other workers tell her they had it and wasn't supposed to. You can do your application for a real ID online as I had to renew my driver's license before my birthday and all you have to do is fill out the form and scan and upload your required documents to the website and then print out your confirmation number. Then I looked online for the best and shortest waiting time at the Claremont office and today was the day, less than 20-30 minutes so I jumped in the car and drove straight there and the line only had about 8 people. Then a friendly woman came by and took each of our temperatures and if we passed, we were given a sticker to show we are screened. When I showed her my confirmation number, she told me that I needed to go into the express line! Yay, no one was in the express line so I was next to be processed outside. There is only one person who handles both lines so after she finished with someone in the non-appointment line I was next, woohoo! From there she looked over my papers and assigned me a number K017 and texted the very same number on my phone and told me to go inside and have a seat on the right side and wait to be called. All seats are six feet apart. So I waited a few minutes and there was a screen showing who was being served at what kiosk! When your number is called it shows on that screen, and someone announces your number and where you are to go. My second stop when called was where I showed my documents once again and paid the fee for the Real ID/renewal. They also take credit cards so I used that. You have to remember to stay in the box on the floor and not get close to the counter. And of course, everyone must wear a face mask. I brought my own pen to sign the papers and also they ask you to do an electronic thumb print. I also had to do the eye test so luckily I was wearing my contact lenses rather than glasses! The worker at this kiosk was efficient but not friendly. Then the next step was to go to another kiosk to get your photo taken and the worker there was friendly and said I had a nice smile! After the photo was taken I had to wait in another line to get processed and the woman there gave me an interim driver's license and said the real iD would come in less than 2 months before the interim expired. All in all, the whole process from waiting in line outside to leaving the DMV took about 30-35 minutes! read more

Overall it's not the worst DMV I've been to and it wasn't a terrible experience. I would try to make an appointment before going and filling out what you can before arriving online. We had appointments first thing in the morning and the check-in line for those with appointments and those without became merged because there wasn't enough employees to service two lines. The line to check in took 10-15 minutes (with an appointment) and then you wait inside on chairs placed along the walls for your number to be called. There are signs everywhere stating 'No cameras' but then there are QR codes on posters for more information. I'm not sure how you'd be able to utilize the code without your phone. There are computers inside for you to retrieve your confirmation number if you forgot to bring it. The person I went to the DMV had to use this service. When called the employee asked if he took a picture of the confirmation number....where there were signs that no phones were permitted. He said no and they were able to pull it up on the computer. The employers at this location are EFFIN NASTY!!!! The level of rudeness is almost abusive. I had to go 4 times for a change of address, every time I got different information and it's because they don't effin' listen to you when you talk, because they are doing another 20 things in the background while blasting music inside their cubicles. The person giving away numbers didn't even let me talk or ask her what form I really needed, immediately jumped into conclusions about my needs and keep shutting me up while yelling at me to answer her questions. Drivers license with real ID This place is just unbelievable. We came with all paperwork, an american passport but a European birth certificate (original and translation) as my kid is not born here. We had an appointment and we uploaded all documents correctly. The lady at the entrance told us that they don't accept the birth certificate. We told her that we have only this and that we have an official translation. She sent us home. She was extremely rude and unfriendly.
