So I had my very first acupuncture experience today. I have to admit I was a little nervous. I broke my foot over a year ago and it still isn't 100% so I figured I'd try acupuncture and that it couldn't hurt-no pun intended. So your probably wondering, does it actually hurt? Depending on where she is putting the needles you may not feel it at all or you may feel a tiny pinch. Everything she said about my body definitely felt true. So Carolyn does seem to be quite intuitive. She put around 8-10 needles in and left me for 45 minutes. I am not going to lie, I was getting pretty antsy at the end. It felt like a test of patience. Alright Yelp, it's time that we get a little intimate. It all started with me developing a cyst on my inner thigh and a trip to the dermatologist. My adorable, little dermatologist, Pam, of Rapaport Dermatology, said that it had developed due to an increase in my running schedule. Once we started talking about running, I mentioned that I often have patella issues in my left knee, to which she excitedly referred me to her Acupuncturist, Carolyn. I spoke with my mom about the idea of seeing an acupuncturist and we both decided we would go together. Carolyn's office hours are a bit on the random side of things, but we settled for a Sunday afternoon because the meter parking would be free and we didn't have a lot going on. Within just a few seconds of examining the color of my tongue, Carolyn was able to tell a lot about my body. Don't believe me, do you? Well, you should because she was eerily correct about one too many things. Mainly, she noted that I was lacking in cortisol due to the fact that, according to what I told her, I am chronically stressed. She then asked if I got tired after I ate meals, which astonishingly, I do! A problem that has since become a thing of the past due to treatment and herbal supplements. Once I began my session with Carolyn, I remembered that acupuncture is often suggested as a non-invasive treatment for hyperhidrosis, a condition for overactive sweat glands (a condition that I have). I have already had permanent surgery for my hands, but had been noticing an increasing amount of sweat in my feet over the past few months. I mentioned this to Carolyn and asked if she had had any patients with this before, to which she said yes, but nobody long term enough to know if she could help. Needless to say, I felt intrigued and challenged to stick it out and see if we could notice some results. While the hyperhidrosis has not completely left my feet, it has gotten unbelievably better than I could have ever hoped for. I've been getting accupuncture from Carolyn a couple times a week for several months now and I see and feel the changes after every session. She is a calm presence, trustworthy and an expert in her field. She isn't pushy with Chinese herbs if that's not your thing but if and when I express some concerns, she always has thoughtful troubleshooting ideas to alter my diet with regular food items I can get at the grocery store or Whole Foods. Carolyn not only has had years of rigorous training but she's an instructor as well. She offers such an affordable cost, there's no reason you shouldn't try it. She could be charging at least $300 a session but she's such a generous person only charging $25/visit as she wants to bring the healing art to the masses. Without a doubt, I had one of the greatest experiences with Carolyn. I came in for a birth chart reading. Beforehand, she had asked for my name, time of birth, date of birth and place of birth but no other information was given. I affectionately refer to Carolyn as my "Reset" button. I started going to her for allergies about 18 months ago, and have continued seeing her almost weekly for a variety of other reasons. I was hesitant to try acupuncture because I'm terrified of needles (I cry when they have to take blood,not from the pain but from a fear of needles). She eased me into it though, and the needles don't hurt. I don't feel most of them, and when you do feel them it's a light pressure, not pain. For someone with a needle phobia, I can tell you that there is nothing to be afraid of.
