River East Gallery - The crowd underneath the rap letters

I maybe should wait for a return visit to write a more comprehensive review but Toledo is an hour…read moreaway, Yelp ain't paying us for our professionalism, obviously, and I take more pride in racking up Firsts than in running up my total reviews so away we go! This place used to be a tattoo parlor and it shows in the layout. It might not be optimum for all shows but I kind of liked it for the Midwest and Beyond graffiti show I attended with some fellow Detroiters. One of the tattooing rooms was the cofounder's studio that he had opened up as a chill spot and it was fun trading sketches in black books with others who sought a place away from the hubbub of the main room. Connor Degnan's Art was on full display, too, and it was a fun side quest from the main exhibit. A back room also had some brightly colored pieces that seemed to be part of the permanent or semi-permanent collection. Turnout was just right; the room was filled up but not overstuffed to the point of claustrophobia. The curators maximized the wall space with a lively and varied collection. Quality varied but there were definitely some standout pieces. To me the big problem with reproducing graffiti style art in a gallery is it loses a lot of its vitality stripped of its proper lawless context. It loses a lot of its street cred if you take it off the streets. Nevertheless it was fun to see and a good crowd to see it. A DJ played old school hip hop and the snack table was legit. The rap letters over the front door with the gallery name was a nice touch; I feel like that's not just for this show and is gonna be around. I hope so. Hope this gallery is gonna stick around, too. It could really go either way with this type of establishment.

This unique business is an art framing center, with some nice works from Thomas Kinkade and many…read moreothers, they have some nice pieces. If you are having anything framed it is worth the drive, the money you save on the framing, will more than pay for your lunch and maybe a mocha late too. I have had several pieces of art framed and one special, oddly framed piece, (on a 45 degree angle) and the project was done professionally and beautifully done. The gentleman that does the framing takes great pride in the quality of his work. Usually you would pay top dollar for this quality, but it so reasonably priced, I was pleasantly surprised when I got the bill. This is a real find, if you like coffee, this place is great! I find it hard to believe this restaurant is in such a small town like this. The food is of the highest quality and the attached coffee cafe is as close to a Coffee Barrister you are going to get in the Midwest. The main cafe person is very, very well versed in coffee and beans and quality. I have traveled all over the country and some in Europe and this guy knows his stuff. If you are a coffee house fan, I don't think you will be disappointed. In fact I think you need to make this small cafe a stop if you are a coffee snob. The deserts available are all made from scratch on location, I have eaten there many times and the deserts are always worth the trip alone, Add a Mocha with it and you'll have a worthy sugar rush. Of course you can get everything coffee made without sugar and skinny if you like. Did I happen to mention they make 90% of their food from scratch? If you have not figured it out, I highly recommend this small, out of the way, quite place. If you don't know where to look for the place, it is in the same building as the small post office, a barber shop and beauty shop. Just across the street from the bank. At this time they don't have wireless available but they are working on it and should have it in the future. Call first, and ask if you need it.
