I visited a local coffee shop and bought a bag of the oak city coffee. It wasn't my favorite since the beans were freshly roasted to use in my espresso machine. It was pretty hard to dial the beans in since they were fresh. We did try to go to the google maps address and only saw a store front with no business at the location for oak city. Oak City Coffee Roasters is located on Hargett Street down the hill from Boylan Bridge Pub. It's a metal building with the name over a sliding garage door. It is easy to miss but I would 100% recommend taking some time to go down there on a Friday evening or Saturday to meet the owner Bill who manages the company solely. Whether you're enjoying music at on First Friday (with $2 discounts off certain bags of coffee) or you stop in on a Saturday afternoon like I did, Bill will welcome you and share his passion for the trade of roasting and his desire to use his skills to make an impact not only in Raleigh but worldwide. Bill always has fresh coffee brewed ready to drink but can also do a pour over of anything you'd like to taste. The coffee is delicious and that in addition to Bill's passion for creating a good business with the desire to help others that will keep me going back. I cannot say enough good about Oak City Coffee Roasters and would encourage anyone in the Raleigh area to support this business (one year old this month!) and get to know Bill. Even though the shop has limited hours, you can order a bag of coffee online and he will deliver it to your home for free in the Raleigh area OR you can walk down the street to Café de los Muertos and pick up a bag. On my visit I tried the Kenyan Select, which was delicious. A strong coffee that hits you perfectly with a blend of dark blackberry flavors and doesn't leave acidity to the ending flavor. My roommate loves this coffee so much that he wakes up every morning, steals it from the cupboard and makes some for the two of us. (Really not a bad system.) When I was biking by oak city coffee roasters, the big doors drew me in. It was Saturday, and I needed something to help me continue through the afternoon into the night. I was given a free cup of coffee (thanks!!!) Which was delicious... and there was no way I was leaving without a bag. The nice man guided me to the coffees he thought I'd like most, based on some preferences I shared, and I selected the Valiente. At $12 for a bag, I questioned my choice, but I didn't need to. Even though I normally hoard my "fancier" goods, I'm excited to drink this coffee every day, and I will definitely buy more once I run out. I left my old girl coffee pot for you....we hung out with our pals cream and sugar to cover up the bitterness of the K-cups you insist on using. But there's a new love in town. One that requires a little side action with Miss Coffee Pot. The Kabum coffee sold at Oak City Roasters. Be still my heart. No literally. This stuff is like a jolt to the system. Those overpowering friends cream and sugar have slowly faded away and left just me...and Kabum. I'm sorry to break it to you this way. The truth is Kabum was with me every morning these past few weeks and I am in love. She has a bold flavor and full body. She smells divine! Locally owned coffee roaster near Boylan Bridge. Owned by NC State alum Billy Landahl, Oak City Coffee is a nice little roastery behind the Boylan Bridge Brewpub, and across the tracks from Five Star Restaurant. If the garage door is open, the shop is open. There aren't really any reliable hours, which is the only drawback. On First Friday's, there's usually free coffee and a band playing. I'm not quite sure what happens in the winter, but fortunately that isn't a huge concern in Raleigh. Coffee is sourced directly from Central America and Africa. I have enjoyed the varieties that I have tried, including Yirga Chefe from Ethiopia and Kilimanjaro from Tanzania. Billy recently ran a successful Kickstarter project that will provide jobs to adults with autism or other developmental disorders. The project funded the creation of City Cups, which are essentially recyclable cups for Keurig machines filled with Oak City Coffee. Awesome idea. read more

Just found this coffee today and was completely intrigued by the packaging and personal touches added on the back about the roasters or farmers. I immediately drove home and brewed a few cups of the Antigua selection. Very light, but the flavors came together so well. Nothing was competing for attention...perfect flavor harmony. We were so excited when we drove by and saw this place for the first time! It really got us started on the idea of locally roasted coffee. All the varieties we've tried have been great--we're particularly big fans of how flavorful the peaberry variety he has is, but we're told that Kabum is the big seller. Of course, the review wouldn't be complete without a brief rave about how wonderful the owner is. His genuine passion for coffee shows, and we left with big smiles on our faces after talking to him for just a few minutes. The world needs more enthusiasm like that! read more

Best coffee in the capital by far and probably the best in the state or on the east coast. But they aren't open enough. I have been there 4 times when they are closed. And Raleigh Brewing Company is usually sold out of the Oak City Coffee. If you can make it when they are open buy a bunch you will not regret it! read more

I became a fan of Oak City Roasters after buying some of their coffee at Fresh Market. My husband and I liked it so much, we decided to make the trip over to their storefront to see what other flavors are available. The gentleman manning the place that day not only explained all the coffees to us, but also took us back to the roasting machine and showed my kids how it works.
