It was late September when we visited and it was one of the few colder, rainy nights so we had to sit inside. However the dining area is open, warm, bright and immaculate. We started with the cod cakes and sauteed mushrooms for starters. The cakes are not the traditional Portuguese cod fritter, they were lightly crisp and delicate and the mushrooms were rich and firm. We selected a Duro valley red (Quinta dos Castle Ares) which we loved. I selected their Black pork loin end which had a side of a vegetable lasagna, my wife had the Black pork cheek in plum sauce with chestnuts and greens (see photos). I regret that I did not write down the Portuguese names of the dishes. But both main courses were complex and satisfying. For vegetarians, I believe they offer the veg lasagna as a separate dish, and have other veg friendly options. Fore desert we split the chocolate mouse, my wife had port and I had (..two..) Beirão. It was the first time I had tried that specialty and now I am a fan. The service was excellent. We were attended properly and kindly and if there was a language barrier, one of the staff who spoke English was there to help. I highly recommend Histórico for a lovely dining experience should you find yourself in Guimarães.

Dinner seating started at 7 so we had a drink and watched the sunset next door (great people and good cocktails) then headed over. Great greeting, nice table. The food was fantastic- steak for me and monkfish for my wife. The wine and bread were great. We struck up a conversation with a French couple at the next table and hope to see them on the path.

We ate at Papas Zaide on a Sunday, and the owner cooked a meal for three very difficult guests - two vegetarians and someone who was allergic to dairy and eggs. She created a basic stew over rice with pseudo-chicken for us vegetarians and made sure all the appetizers were edible by all - including a pseudo olive loaf, along with delicious bread, olives, oranges, and salad, accompanied by honey and olive oil. For the meat eaters, the traditional meal of fall-off-the-bone pork and potatoes hit the spot. The white and red table wine from small, local Duoro Valley wineries was some of the best we had on the whole tour, topped with a moscato for dessert. Our hostess even made a special dessert with no eggs - a kind of trifle with non-egg custard, fruit, jello, and biscuits that was delicious. Their specialty is definitely their roasted chicken, which one can see cooking on spits at the entrance of the restatruant, conjuring such amazing smells that truly open up the appetite. The staff is sweet and did their best to serve me, with my English/Spanish and no Portugese self. Everything I ate was top-tier without being fancy. Simple and flavorful. I ordered a 1/2 chicken (way too much for me by myself) that came with batatas (french fries- which I didnt love), so I ordered a side of white rice and a salad, as well as what I would call a carafe of wine (it was definitely either two very healthy pours or 3 regular ones). All in all, I paid $15 euros, which I thought was a great value for all that I was given and how tasty everything was.
