In my almost 40 years, I have never written a bad review of a business. Today is a first. The quality of the customer service I received from O'Connor Maloney warrants me wasting time out of my day to express my concerns and warn other potential clients.
At the beginning of our meeting, I told the CPA that I already started filing my 2020 taxes on TurboTax, but it said that I would owe the state of Massachusetts money, which I did not think was right. That was part of the reason why my (then) fiancé and I sought financial and tax preparation advice from a CPA.
At the time, I was a full-time student and had earned about $1500 in 2020 working part-time. Filing as a single person, I was technically below the poverty line. The CPA told me that because I withdrew from some of my investments, I still needed to pay capital gains, even though this money went towards the purchase of our home that year. My fiancé's returns would be a little more involved and would cost $350; there was no mention of an additional $350 for mine. At one point during the meeting he said my returns "will not cost anything", or words to that effect.
For someone, who I assume has been in this industry for some time, he should have known after a cursory glance at my paperwork (for very simple returns), that I would end up owing that year. After having already completed the necessary steps to file on TurboTax (at no, or very little cost to me), why would anyone then pay a firm $350 to file on his/her behalf? That is not a financially sound decision, and it was the CPA's job to convey that. He did not do so. In fact, he did the opposite.
I would never advise one of my clients to make a decision that was not financially sound, especially when it was readily and obviously apparent to me. That is irresponsible and a very poor business practice.
Not that it matters to such a large firm, but my husband and I will not return to O'Connor Maloney for services again and I will certainly not recommend this firm, either. They wasted no time depositing $350 of my hard-earned money without even an acknowledgement of the concerns that I voiced in my letter to them. They clearly do not have their clients' best interests in mind. read more
