He had SO many facts about the city and everything we were seeing--and he was hilarious. Honestly, I think Andy could probably carry an entire conversation by himself if you stopped responding. He just keeps going! But in the best possible way. The themed drinks were a lot of fun. I had an apple cider mimosa, which felt very appropriate for a fall boat ride. They also had a special Oktoberfest mug for $45 that came with FREE REFILLS. My friends took advantage of that for the beer and cider, because apparently they understood the assignment. Food-wise, we shared a HUGE Bavarian pretzel and an apple cider donut. There were also larger food plates available for $16.50 if you wanted to make a whole meal of it. When we went, the leaves were just starting to change, so I can only imagine how gorgeous this ride will be once the colors really come in. I'm guessing mid-November could be spectacular. I spent $16.50 on a disgusting plate of German food. However, the food sold in their concession stand was better albeit expensive. They let us off in Bear Mountain for what was supposed to be a three hour stop but turned into a two hour stop from them running behind. To our disappointment, the zoo featured in the park had barely any animals in it and we did not see one bear in the entire time. The highlight for me was the beautiful view of the fall foliage mountains near the middle of the park and lake. Although the amenities were lacking and we were packed in like sardines, I did have a wonderful day with my friends, but I honestly felt that this cruise was a bit overrated and would not recommend it.

It's a unique casual outing for friends/families/couples/kids. I live in Stamford, about 20 minutes away and cannot believe I hadn't heard about this earlier. I managed to catch the last ferry of the 2018 season (note the calendar posted on the Norwalk Seaport Association website) and can't wait for next year to do this again! Getting there/parking: I had originally plugged in the Norwalk Seaport Association address into maps, but the ferry itself is actually just over the little bridge. We parked for free across the street from the Seaport Association and walked over, but there is also a paid parking lot immediately in front of the ferry departure. We arrived about 5 minutes in advance and bought tickets at the booth without any issues. They accept credit and cash, and you can sit anywhere on the ferry. Our trip had about 30-40 folks, including some older people and young kids (toddlers). The ferry ride: So relaxing! The ferry takes a leisurely pace up through to Sheffield Island, about a 40 minute ride. The ride is smooth, and we were able to stand up and walk around the ferry if we wanted to. I think this would honestly be fine for anyone sensitive to motion/sea sickness. There are usually a lot of small boats and tiny islands in that area, and its nice to sit back and catch a breeze. On the return trip, the captain took us on an extra loop to better see the Manhattan and New Rochelle skylines which were visible on the horizon. Such a cool experience, and I had no idea it could be seen all the way from Norwalk! Sheffield Island: The tour of the historic lighthouse was really interesting, and its clear that a lot of effort and love went into setting this place up and restoring it. When we went, the lighthouse was under renovation, but an amazing fantastic volunteer snuck my husband and I up, and what a treat! The staircases/ladders were narrow but the views up there were absolutely stunning and so worth it! It was a clear beautiful day and we could see the water, the coast, the sound, and the Manhattan skyline off in the distance. Absolutely amazing. I don't think there's any other view quite like it. We had a few hours to ourselves on the island, and since the lighthouse tour was just about 30-40 minutes, there was plenty of time to walk along the shore. There was lots of sea glass, shells, and even a few horseshoe crabs. The shore is a little too rocky to actually enter the water, but there are lots of boulders to sit on and enjoy the view, and it's very peaceful. Even with a full ferry, the island was not crowded at all and we could spend some time sitting on the benches, chatting, walking around at our leisure. There were picnic tables set up, as well as a nature walk (sadly closed due to ticks, but we'll have to do that next year) Tips/advice: - Bring a camera! Trust me you're going to want to take a lot of photos of the view from the lighthouse tower. - Book tickets in advance, online, since the ferries can be filled up. - The ramp is a bit steep, so if you're bringing kids, bring a small portable stroller, since bulky might be a little heavy to push up. - Wear rugged slip-resistant shoes, since the shore is quite rocky. - Pack a picnic! I think you can even BYOB. Some lemonade, a caprese sandwich, some olives, while enjoying the view...perfection. All in all, a fantastic experience that I can't wait to share with family and friends!!

We passed three lighthouses-Peck Ledge LH, Sheffield Island LH and Green's Ledge LH. Charlie, co-captain of Captain John, had just toured the inside of Green's Ledge LH the day before which is listed on Airbnb for $6,000! He went around the ship showing everyone the floor plan. It especially exciting to be on the Long Island Sound and to see the red and white towers from Northport, since I live on Long Island!! We were able to see several different viewpoints of the sunset and osprey nests as well. Definitely recommend to residents of Norwalk AND tourists alike!

Before getting off at 34th Street, the boat stopped in Astoria, Roosevelt Island and Long Island City. One can purchase tickets on the app, or through machines located at every depot. I was advised to activate our ticket right before boarding to maximize the free transfer, valid for 120 minutes (which we actually didn't need on this trip.) The one-way fare is $4.50 or $29 for a ten-trip pass. Seniors, and those with disabilities can apply for discounted fares. There's limited seating outside, with more down below. Also, a bar! Apparently, you can take your dog which my grandpup Hank, takes full advantage of.

Crowds gather in front of the doors, but to my surprise, these old cool ferries are huge and there's room for everyone. So, don't panic. Free ride, ignore the chaos! However, I can speak to my experience getting there and the whole line situation from Manhattan to Randall's Island, and the return trip back. Coming from Jersey, I had walked crosstown from NY Penn Station to the terminal on 35th Street (easier to cross the intersection here). Because there was an event, there was clear signage for where to go and people at the line entrance waiting to scan QR codes. The rides are first-come, first-serve. So as each ferry comes in and passengers onboard disembark, the vessel is checked and then the line moves and people embark. The crew watch and assist when people walk onboard and count how many are getting on the ship. There were people who needed different accommodations - for wheelchairs, strollers, etc. The line on Randall's Island to get back to Manhattan was a little confusing. There wasn't obvious signage. You can see from the park paths where people are walking into the park from the Ferry, but it's not obvious where the line begins to get onto the ferry that's leaving. The entrance is further away. The ride on the water was smooth and I'd say it took about 10 minutes. Amazing views of Manhattan and Brooklyn. If you've never taken one of the ferries on the East River, I recommend taking a ferry at least once to see what it's like if you ever can.

Very frustrating experience on the 15:35 Astoria E90th ferry line on June 4th. I was alone with two…read moreyoung children, including a 5-month-old in a stroller. My lane has stairs, so I had to use the side ramp, and there were no clear instructions on where stroller or wheelchair users should board. When the gate opened, I tried to check in my ticket, but a lady working the line pointed with her chin toward the regular line and ask if I saw it in a very dismissive way, even though I clearly couldn't use the stairs. I was then made to wait until everyone else had boarded. If all boarding lanes are not accessible, there should be a clear and fair process for wheelchairs and strollers. People with no other option shouldn't be treated as if they're doing something wrong or made to wait last just because there is no clear accessible boarding system in place.
