Disclaimer: This review reflects my personal experience. I'm being fully transparent and honest about my stays at this hostel, which I visit once a year for both personal and business reasons. I've been coming to this hostel since 2017, and while I've had a mix of experiences--some good and some not--most of them have been positive. I'm bilingual and tend to understand travelers better than most. I usually book through Hostelworld, which I recommend for anyone looking for a fair price and reliable booking. One of the highlights is the people you meet here. I've connected with travelers from Chile, Germany, France, Canada, and Japan, and shared great moments watching FIFA games--yes, including watching Salt Bae embarrass himself on national television. As a photographer and documentarian, it's my job to assess and evaluate conditions at establishments like this. Some people may not like the location, but I personally do. The hostel is only 5-10 minutes from Manhattan's East Village, with a nearby subway stop at Morgan Ave. The surrounding area is made up of warehouses and lofts and is frequently used as a filming location for movies and TV shows. There are also excellent food spots nearby, including a great bar and pizza place just down the block. When checking in, make sure to lock up your belongings. If you have larger items, you can ask the front desk to store them for you. The hostel does offer handicap accessibility and an elevator, which is not common in many hostels. This is a good option for large groups, families, or group travelers, as long as you book in advance. Rooms are cleaned daily, so please allow housekeeping the opportunity to clean both rooms and bathrooms. I recommend staying here because the layout is comfortable, and beds are first come, first serve, allowing some flexibility. The showers are excellent, and there is free coffee and tea available. There is no breakfast, but there are nearby cafés, or you can buy food and cook in the large shared kitchen. Please label your food properly, and if you're leaving and have leftovers, relabel them as free so nothing goes to waste. Another disclaimer: I received no compensation for this review. I stayed in a shared room with 5 beds for two weeks while looking for housing in the city. The NY Moore is an easy recommendation for me for other people in the same situation. I'm a regular hostel user whenever I travel and something I didn't anticipate here was having my own standalone bed (i.e., not a bunk bed) as well as the room having plenty of space. Bathroom was a nice size and was cleaned daily. The amenities in the basement were solid. I didn't cook much but I did take full advantage of the fridges/freezers. Four stars! Facilities were probably the best I've seen in a hostel! Bathrooms were clean and spacious! Not a very social hostel, no planned events except for a comedy night on Wednesday. If you're looking for a more social hostel, I'd suggest HI NYC where I stayed last time. read more

It was a great stay. Everything about this hostel is spot on. My room was clean and a joy to stay in. 4 Bed female dorm, not all bunkbeds, spacious. Has lockers. Private clean bath and shower shared amongst us. Quiet this day/night. Staff are really good. Helpful and polite. The hostel has a homey layout, with furniture, TV, library, dining areas, vending machine and working kitchen. I highly recommend, good value. read more

CRAZY LADY KEPT ME UP ALLLLL NIGHT. I DO NOT RECOMMEND  honestly ONLY thing I liked was just the art on the walls, I am being honest and transparent here: I am not a fearful person by any means. But I literally had a crazy lady sleeping next to me. She did not sleep the entire night and was stomping back and forth from the bed to the bathroom and going out of the room constantly throughout the night. She had the light on, and was talking to herself. I went to et assistance from the front desk in which they came to tell her to be respectful to the other guests in the room. She pretended to go to sleep and started up again... We were on the 1st floor and there was a Hasidic man smoking a cigarette starring inside the bedroom, THE WINDOWS WERE OPEN WITH NO BARS ON THE WINDOW. He was 5 ft from my bed.... the worst experience ever. I slept with my clothes I was wearing from the day. And left with my eyes bloodshot. When I told the front desk about her, they said they had problems with her all night. NEVER AGAIN. I do NOT RECOMMEND. read more

Best hostel I've stayed at in NYC for sure. Friendly staff, good prices, beds are actual beds and not bunk beds, which is definitely a rarity. There's 3-4 beds per room which is reasonable, and each room has a shower. Circulation's not super great, but there are windows to help with that. The rooms are pretty big too, and there's a spot to hang clothes as well as lockers (need to bring your own lock, as usual with hostels). Location is a bit far from Manhattan although it's close to Bushwick and Williamsburg. I'd definitely recommend this hostel out of any other one when visiting NYC. read more

Artsy, cozy, different. I have never stayed in a hostel in the States. It definitely had a hostel vibe but much different than my other experiences. Everyone was friendly but there was not much interaction amongst any guests or wirkers. Many guests were much older than other hostels I've been to as well. Everyone I saw was at least 30. They have typical hostel features, a common room, TV, to do lists, and suggestions etc. The WiFi was a bit spotty but manageable. Art on the walls was great, and fun to look at. If you need an affordable, clean, hassle free place to be, you can't go wrong with Moore. There isn't much in the neighborhood. The access to public transportation made other parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan easily accessible. read more

Definitely the best hostel I've visited in New York. I met some very interesting world travelers, and the neighborhood is teeming with musicians and artists. They have options for single, four, and six person dorms (mixed and gender specific). I love the game room, free wifi, and the affordable price they offer. I paid $65 for the 4 person, and $63 gets you the 6 person dorm. Not much of difference for the upgrade. The kitchen area gives you storage bins for your food if you plan to stay an extend period of time - this includes a fridge, eating tables and a cooking area. Staff are locals that know a lot about what is around, so fire away with your questions. They have activities, maps and events posted on the walls. Just walking through the venue will make you look at the wall for at least a couple of hours. Inside and out, the building is covered with talented graffiti artists who have shown us that their vibrant subjects and colors can add amazing character to a bland urban building. read more

I wanna thank Ronnie (hope I spelled it right), Adam, and Jack (hope I remembered that correctly) for treating me like an old friend as soon as I walked in. I whole heartedly believe that the staff plays a huge role with the hostel experience whether you're new or experienced with staying at other hostels, as they do an amazing job answering any questions as well as ensuring that everyone that comes in feels comfortable and accommodated. This place has a cozy, laid back vibe and has areas to lounge in if you're taking rest breaks during your stay in ny. Within a few blocks of this hostel, there are many establishments and a few train stations that are walking distance. Cannot complain about a thing from my visit. I gave this 5 stars originally. Well, au contraire. They start out nice, and then it gets all Brooklyn hostile (no pun intended). Who wants a hostile hostel? I would like to call out Marcel, from Ohio, who decided he didn't like me, honestly I am likeable as hell, as well as Zeta, who watched Marcel and the manager, his name escapes me, but just look for a scowl - literally kick my bag down the street. All because I gave them 5 stars, booked a night there, well under their 25 day max (come on 25 days?! I was a 14 and that was killing me already). The also charged my credit card for friends of theirs and still have not returned the money, about $240. Finally, you will get massive breathing problems because the AC units haven't been cleaned since before the internet was invented. The patrons are really cool though. Take it from me, stay somewhere else (Jazz on the Park, Bowery Hotel and Hostel, International Hostel, a ditch, anything but there). read more

They never refund you if you cancel your booking a month before arrival and even after they confirmed the cancellation was free! They will keep on messaging that refund done but will never provide with any ID transactions and bank refund operation numbers! My bank opened an issue to claim for money back now so please think twice if you really want all these problems with this hostel! They are doing dishonorable business. read more

Adequate A pretty nice hostel. Pro's: Staff are friendly. Nice decor. Spacious in dorm rooms and common areas. Kitchen is not bad. Water is always hot (to my knowledge!). Free tea and coffee. And its decent coffee too! Walking distance to a couple of different Subway lines (I think this is true for most of NYC, so take that with a grain of salt). Cons: $5 to store luggage for the day of check out is petty and unnecessary. Leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Expensive (again, this is probably true of most of NYC). The area it's in is pretty average. Its not unsafe as far as I could tell, but it's not particularly nice either. The staff seemed very uninformed on the area and which direction to point you in for a variety of basic needs. E.g. we were after a reasonably priced supermarket (not the expensive organic one that's marked on the map). Two different staff members both just said the organic one was the only option nearby. A quick google search showed half a dozen equidistant options in the opposite direction. Come on guys! This was my first hostel experience and I was very pleased. Staff was nice and understanding when I had check out time wrong. Rooms were clean, with exception of bathroom, there was lots of hair in shower and on bathroom floor. That was my only issue. Great place for cheap, last minute accomodation. read more

3-stars, bumped up a star due to them still working things out + cheapness. ===== Pros: CHEAP for a 8x10 room in a suite (of 4 rooms) at $46/day... did not expect this in NYC. Suite itself is pretty well outfitted... even has a full-sized fridge. New building; dusty but clean. Location surprisingly vibrant... seems like this is a pretty hipster part of town under massive gentrification. (Momo's Sushi & Roberta's Pizza are excellent in their own rights.) Very walkable to subway, after which it's ~20 min to Manhattan. ===== Cons: The room walls only goes up around 7-8' or so leaving about 2-3' of "air space". This means a lot of VISUAL privacy but you can pretty much hear EVERYTHING by the other people. Wish they could just... plastic-wrap the space or something to insulate the sound. WiFi is iffy and not really accessible to a bunch of the rooms (more specifically: my room). They really need to fix their heating issues... was too cold for all of us in the suite. At least they listened to our feedback and gave us extra blankets and supposedly turned on the heaters but it wasn't really noticeable. Our specific water faucet in the suite was kinda messed up, and the shower curtain was too short. ===== TL;DR -- Cheap hostel with caveats. Price outweighs issues for me. :) read more

It's rare these days that you can walk into a hostel and get a sincere welcome, right when you pull the entrance door! The staff was super friendly and made sure I had a good experience especially because I slept in the bedroom next to the entrance! It was a bit noisy around 10-11pm, but the opposite would have been surprising; it's still a hostel in Brooklyn full of young adults. The decor is cool, the ambiance is cosy, and the travellers I met were respectful and laid-back. On the first night, I shared a room with two 50-something ladies from Boston and the following night I was alone in my room, yay for good sleep and shameless selfies in the mirror! Since I had a canadian phone number, I tried to get a reservation in a restaurant, but I had to give a local phone number, so I gave the hostel's number, forgetting to mention to the staff I did. Happily, there was a lady who confirmed the reservation for me, and the restaurant was waiting for me as expected! She knocked on my door after I entered my room to make sure who I was and whether I intended to show up at the restaurant. She also told me the good stuff she heard about the restaurant! This is the best hostel in NY. The staff is helpful and walked me to my room upon arrival. Plenty of areas to socialize and also private spaces like the computer room. It's noisy in the hallways, but what do you expect. I got a 3-bed female dorm and it's surprisingly spacious. I will stay again if I need to! read more

They said she had asked for a room transfer but didn't notify her that her belongings were going to move. She was pretty upset because they left a lot of her belongings in the first room. Our (my boyfriend and I) flight back to SFO got canceled super last minute and we couldn't extend our stay at our airbnb in Brooklyn, so we immediately found the NY Moore Hostel on Yelp and made arrangements to stay for the night. The people working at the front desk were extremely gracious and were able to accommodate to our last minute request for a room that night (for both of us too!) The room we got had 4 neatly made beds and was very spacious, clean, and comfortable and I had a great sleep for the one night we stayed. I did not feel the least bit uneasy while staying here and although I realize it is a little pricier for a hostel - we paid $60/person - you're paying for the quality of the service as well as your comfort. I recommend this place for anyone looking for an affordable place to stay in the Brooklyn area! read more

The room was as expected for any basic hostel but I found the other people staying there, especially staying up late in the public spaces, to be very, very eclectic - and not in a Bushwick way. Ei there was a 50-something woman speaking to herself in her native language in the bathroom at 2AM, for 1-hour. I will not be staying here again and won't recommend it anyone who wants to have a decent nights sleep. There are much better hostels that cost a little extra in Manhattan and have sane people. read more

What an amazing place! I only stayed here for one day (October 1st as my crash-in day before I go to where I really needed to go). It was my first time to ever stay in a hostel, and I was a little skeptical about it. I mean, sharing a bedroom with strangers? I was on an extremely tight budget for my solo trip to NYC, so staying in a hostel was a crazy choice...especially since it's my first EVER visit to the jungle. My friends who told me about hostels say that they've had very decent experiences and that they are not so bad, depending on where you go. I did a quick search on Hostel World, and NY Moore Hostel was at the very top. I read the reviews, the amenities and everything in between -- it turns out NY Moore Hostel made the cut. Little did I know, it wasn't that bad - maybe because I was already primed into thinking it wouldn't be that bad. Everything turned out just as I expected it to be. I got the mixed male/female room, only because it was cheaper. It turns out I roomed with 2 other guys (I think both were in their 30s). The only downfall is that you got to be extremely obedient and super quiet when rooming with others. My plane landed very late the night I checked-in, and 1 of the guys was already sleeping, and the other was about to sleep. Crap. The floors creaked a little, so even if I was the quietest person ever, I'm deemed to fail, but that's the only problem. One thing to note is that towels are $3, and if you need a hairdryer, you can get one in temporary exchange for your ID. I didn't make use of their common areas, only because I had to leave at 4:30AM the next morning for the TODAY Show! All in all, I can't really say anything bad about this place. This hostel is on par with everything on its website and the positive reviews it has gotten on here and on HostelWorld.com. read more

Stayed here while apartment hunting for places in NYC- great choice and I ended up extending my visit multiple times during my stay because they were so accommodating and the rooms are chic, large lofts with plenty of personal space and this place makes for an opportunity to meet many new people. I stayed in 301- arguably the best room. It's female only with a few queen-sized beds, your own small drawer, lamp and coat area- where do you find that anywhere else for $30? In Williamsburg? Over all, I was quite happy with my 2 day stay at the NY Moore Hostel. It was clean (this applies, to the kitchens, common areas, rooms, and bathrooms), staff was friendly, and the price for a bed in a dorm room was very affordable. The hostel looks nice, I appreciated the cool furniture in the common area, and the art work that could be found on several walls. The hostel is conveniently located between a number of subway stops (I always took the L train on Montrose Avenue), only a few minutes walking distance. As a young woman travelling by herself, I still felt very safe in the neighborhood and didn't have any problems walking by myself. The hostel gives out a small map of the neighborhood that indicates all the different restaurants and other places of interest. The lady who gave me my map also pointed me towards vegan places per request. My room, which I shared with 2 other women, was big, and had a private bathroom. The bed was a bit short, but absolutely ok for me (5'8/1.73m). The room had a/c and a fan in the bathroom. I enjoyed my stay, but there are a few small points that could be improved: It would be lovely if staff could try and make sure that the hostel is quiet(ish) at a certain time during the night. Because even if someone checked in really late, they (and other guests) talked loudly on the hallways. Yes, it's a hostel, but that doesn't mean, I shouldn't be able to sleep. I understand that disposable cups for the (yay free coffee!) coffee kitchen etc are a necessary evil to control the dirty dish situation, however, I wish that the hostel did not use these incredibly unsustainable styrofoamy cups. There are more environmentally friendly options that work just as well! It would be great if the hostel website could give a bit of additional information on things like the towel rental ($3 for a large towel - that's fine by me!). read more

The pathetic, very rude staff especially Elyza at the front desk does not have etiquettes to talk to guests, is very unfriendly and unprofessional, she is not fit to be in Customer Service, bad and negative service. In spite of a confirmed reservation, she lies and says the reservation is cancelled just to charge a higher amount for NYE. Very, very unprofessional, will never recommend this property. read more

This place is pretty great! Hostel Staff were so accomadating and very helpful espcially with places to eat in Brooklyn and Manhattan area. Was fairly clean place. Attracts many people espcially Australian and German folks. The closest train is the L which took me everywhere I needed to go. Hard to find at first but after that was a breeze to travel around the city. Average 45 dollars a night but for New York area pretty great hostel deal. The place is clean and more or less well furnished. The common area is very nice: leather couches, big-screen TV, 3 computers for internet, fridge, coffee, microwave, stereo and blazing fast WI-fi that was recently put in. They are in the process of finishing the basement so that they can have a full kitchen and a game room. Word is that both will be complete before the summer. The staff is amazing. Many are from other towns and countries themselves, so it both gives the place an international flare and also makes them very understanding and helpful to people that are from out of town. Rooms are shared, but furnished well, and housekeeping is in daily. The only wildcard is the guests, which the hostel really has little control over. Most everyone is cool and gets along well. I made several friends there that I've been in touch with and now I have a place to stay (if I ever need it) in the UK, Ireland and Germany. Who knew? **I just looked andsaw that they have filtered my review. I'm not sure why. But, if you can see this, please know thatI lived at 122 and Lenox for 2 years, and am presently staying here for a few weeks, after my apartment went condo. NY Moore Hostel: Renovated Hipster Hostel with Heart OVERVIEW: NY Moore Hostel feels like a small, newly renovated college dormitory in NYC's hippest arts neighborhood. Clean, light, airy, and friendly, the walls are becoming the latest neighborhood gallery space. Staff is friendly, multicultural and multilingual, quickly responsive, helpful, and know their stuff. They run a friendly, professional, hip without being snobby or flaky, safe, clean, hospitable place - for which they've already won several awards during their few years of operation. I've had a great week at NY Moore Hostel - one of my best hostel experiences yet. I expect their name and star to rise quickly. LOCATION: Think of East Williamsburg & Bushwick as the urban campus for the city's newest and next artists, populated by artsies, hipsters, and muggles. Close to local health food shops, bodegas, and a mix of old school Brooklyn neighborhoody shops and restaurants as well as hipster health-food stores and eateries (Roberta's is two blocks away), bars, clubs, galleries, and other creative spaces. This is the avant garde of arts (and gentrification) in hottest nouvelle Brooklyn. It's just a stop or a not long walk to Bushwick and Williamsburg, a brief subway ride into Manhattan's East Village, Greenwich Village, Union Square, Chelsea, and Meat Packing District. ATMOSPHERE: relaxed yet professional, friendly, responsive. Guests tend toward the young, friendly, artsy and hip, as does the space and the staff. Interactions tend to be chill, relaxed, friendly. FACILITIES: In a converted industrial building, just renovated in spring 2014, the hostel has clean white, well lit walls in large, open, airy, high ceiling rooms, with lots of air and light. The walls are becoming a neighborhood gallery space. The living room and breakfast area are inviting, furnished with comfortable, clean furniture, and a huge flat panel TV. Improvements are ongoing, and they tell me to expect a new kitchen, new amenities and fixtures in the shared spaces and rooms. Bathrooms also renovated, large, well cleaned, inviting. Rooms are simple, spartan, large and open. STAFF: Super nice, friendly, quickly responsive & helpful, multicultural & multilingual, and cool. Think: M. Gustave and the Grand Budapest Hostel. Mr. "Buba" Aboubacar Diallo was the night manager, aka Prince of the Night. A Malian guitarist with the style of a romantic lead from Malian cinema, in over 15 languages, including English, French, and Mandingo, Buba entertains, enchants, guides, advises, and problem solves. As him to perform one of his own songs in Mandingo. Victor the evening manager was able to calmly fix any issues, particular technological, and helped me appreciate, setup and install VPN on my laptop. SAFETY: With 24/7 door guard with video monitoring of the hostels shared spaces, firm doors, and secured windows, the hostel feels very safe and secure. CLEANLINESS: The cleanest hostel I've ever experienced. Daily shared space and room cleaning of the bathrooms, light housekeeping. VALUE: Great value for some of the best hostel prices in NYC. read more

Things I loved about NY Moore: -Location: it was conviniently located about 5 blocks from Montrose and Morgan. -Staff: Oren, Tomas, Lydia, Serhat, and Pablo were fantastic and so accomodating to us. -Price: $50 per night for a non-bunk bed and in a semi-private room. -Room: the room had 6 people in it and most hostels usually have about 12 in that same space. It felt really private and safe. I loved that about it and these rooms are HUGE about 10X10. Overall, the location, the staff, and the price is just right. It is very sparse with furniture but it didn't deter from the fantastic place it was. I'll be staying here again! read more

Pro: Staff was extremely nice. He let me check in at 10:00am with no additional charge. Nice comfortable bed, and everything was clean. Safe area. I went back to the hostel at 2am every night with no issue. L train is convenient. Con: The street could be very noisy in the mornings (7am) since the hostel is in a industrial neighborhood. Some guests were actually "residents," and I felt awkward staying in my room in the middle of the days. Since they were "residents," they had no intention of making friendly talks. Overall, I stayed at other hostels before, and NY Moore Hostel is by far the best. read more

This place is awesome! I booked just 3 nights but actually I stayed 5 extra nights. The first 3 nights were perfect so I had to extend my staying. First of all, the staff were so nice that every time I went out they gave some advice and let me know where I should go and what to do. Also everyday at 11:00 the housekeepers cleaned the rooms and the entire place is always clean. The beds are big and comfy, there some lockers in the room so I locked my stuff and I didn't have to worry about my money/laptop. There is a fancy common room with lots of room and many Couches, tv, cold water, and snacks and drinks machines. Also there is a few computers that you always can use. The wifi is perfect and didn't have any problem with it my whole stay. I'm sure that next time in NYC I'll choose this hostel again. read more
