As a pre-warning, I don't want this to reflect on the person who was in charge of my studio session, they were, in fact, kind, but the time and money I wasted is atrocious. When I looked up JL Music Studios, their website, resume, and reviews were impressive, but when I walked in, they did not meet these expectations. First, I couldn't find the studio. Unfortunately for JL Music Studios, their studio is in the basement of a sketchy deli that only sells gum and water. Oh, and let me mention that the vendor of said deli lives in the kitchen. I saw not only living implements, but a handmade bed. The bathroom is in similar condition- gross. I didn't let that deter me and I followed him down the stairs with my musicians when a cloud of smoke started to smother me. It was discussing. There was no ventilation, and an ash tray on a speaker, and (to my music engineer surprise), he had a $1,300 Neumann microphone lying on a brown banana. Yeah. The studio seemed simple enough, with decent equipment. I walked into the little handmade vocal booth and literally gagged. The smell of smoke had amplified like 10 times PLUS the air vent was covered with soundproofing. When I asked for this smell to be remedied (which I thought was impossible), my engineer (Richie- who is not mentioned on the website at all) sprayed Febreze. So much so that the carpet was now covered in white powder. It masked nothing. Worse, my engineer had no idea what he was doing. We wasted at least two hours of precious studio time that I was paying for as he figured out how to set up every instrument. He also didn't know how to work his program, which was some obscure recording software, even after I asked for him to use ProTools. Oh, and the drums broke in the middle of recording. In the end, we got half the stuff I wanted done. When he transferred the songs to my external hard drive, one whole song was empty, and one other song was missing the guitar track. It took about five emails to JL Music Studios to get all those audio files in one piece. Unfortunately, I didn't get what I wanted and have to do a lot of it myself. So... moral of the story: waste of money, I might have lung cancer now thanks to the smoke inhalation. ALSO- I kept hitting my head on a pipe that was directly in the middle of the studio. I now have a bruise. This studio is not as amazing as it is made out to be. Go somewhere better for your money. I blew $1,000 on something I could've made at home.

I arranged rental time at Michiko in late December 2024, for a studio upright piano that turned out…read morewas not in good condition. I believe this was a Kawai. Despite claims the staff made about technicians routinely servicing their pianos, this instrument was not in tune and had not been reguated so the action had what piano technicians call "lost motion," which means there is space between the end of keys and the moving parts of the action. This creates a sloppy feeling in the keys, and thus a sub-standard playing experience. Lost motion is easily corrected and this lasts for a long time so either the cause is poor technician skill or the Michiko does not pay enough to maintain this instrument. Sound from other nearby rehearsal studios was a distraction.

I am going to keep this one short and sweet since I was only visiting the establishment to enjoy a…read moreperformance by some Japanese musicians I had met who were part of a larger collective set this evening. The collective had arranged for one of the larger rooms so they could have some audience members, the full company and be able to stream it online as it happened. Spatially speaking they had a reasonable stage that held everyone involved. A full four piece band, some singers and some traditional Japanese instrument players and a grand piano. To the other side of the room was the soundboard and a setup of chairs. They had about 20 or so chairs to sit in and the audience would be a mix of invited friends, the media and the other members of the collective. Overall a nice group. The sound in this room was wonderful and you heard everything nice and clear and it was quite enjoyable. The space itself was clean and had a number of bathrooms and a WiFi signal to login to. I asked the friendly staffer what else the venue had and they said there were numerous smaller rooms like phone booths almost that people use to practice singing only or their voiceover and podcast work. Good idea. While I don't know if I will ever be there again I enjoyed my time here and thing the talented people who are reading this Yelp should look into the place in case it serves their needs.
