Headline: Elitist, Predatory, and Medically Negligent--A Blatant Bait-and-Switch…read more 1) As a healthcare professional, I am horrified by the conduct at South Hills Dental Arts. They practice a blatant bait-and-switch: their website and Yelp explicitly state they 'accept most insurance' and will file claims for you. However, once I was in the chair on my second day, the staff rescinded this and presented an astronomical $21,000 treatment plan, stating point-blank they 'don't accept any insurance.' Take note: you should receive the total bill estimate on day one, before anything is done. When I disclosed my full disability and limited funds and asked for a payment plan or sliding scale (standard in ethical practices), the staff (biller) literally scoffed. I was told they 'don't like' taking Medicaid (my plan, surprisingly, would have covered absolutely everything they wanted to do) patients because it 'doesn't reimburse enough' and they 'have bills to pay.' Their elitism is only matched by their dishonesty; they performed X-rays and impressions on the first day, then waited until I was back on day two and 'ready to start' the procedure to reveal the full, confusing bill--a direct violation of the 'Federal No Surprises Act'. Most disturbingly, their post-surgical care was nonexistent. After an extensive bone graft and infection debridement, I was left in 'uncontrolled wild pain' for three days with no sleep. I was repeatedly ignored and told to 'just take Tylenol 3, Motrin, and use ice,' which was so medically inadequate that I was forced to go to the ER to get basic pain relief. It is a sad state of healthcare when dentists are so terrified of the FDA that they refuse to follow the drug guide for acute pain, abandoning their patients to suffer. My father was a surgeon who never turned away a patient in need; this office represents the exact opposite of that medical integrity. Not only did he accept anyone, whether they could pay or not, but he also made sure pain was adequately addressed, as it's vital to healing and considered the 6th vital sign; it's so important. Do not trust them with your health or your wallet. While I take responsibility for not doing my due diligence and reading the excessively poor reviews before I went there, I trusted my case worker to do right by me and make sure the office she chose either accepted my dental insurance or at least charged reasonable prices similar to what other dentists in Pittsburgh charge, not high-end boutique-level NYC prices. To add insult to injury, I simply asked the biller to provide a clear bill in which the numbers and procedures matched the appropriate days, and she took it as a personal attack and got mean. I have never been scared of the dentist until now. I really wish I had the confidence to walk around without my front tooth rather than to bear subjecting myself to the rest of the brutal procedure and suspected lack of appropriate pain control. It is especially disturbing to. know that a peer from high school's father would run a business like this. I would be too ashamed to show my face in public. On the flip side, it made me so incredibly proud of my dad, knowing he was a surgeon who wouldn't turn anyone away, no matter whether they could pay the bill. South Hills Dental Arts represents the exact opposite of that medical integrity. Do not trust them with your health and your wallet. The multitude of bad reviews, sadly, say similar things, showing this isn't new; it's a pattern. I want to be very clear, though: Dr. Yousuf (my dentist) and all the staff except the biller and, I assume, Dr. Crandall, the owner, were phenomenal. I can thank them for a lesson in poor business ethics and a newfound extreme fear of dental procedures.

I recently had a very unsettling experience at Kerr and feel it's important to share. Initially,…read morethere was a miscommunication regarding my first appointment, which I take full responsibility for. The office kindly rescheduled me, and I made sure to call ahead to confirm. However, from the moment I spoke with the receptionist, Kristen, I was met with rudeness and hostility. Upon arrival, Kristen seemed frustrated that I hadn't completed new patient paperwork, despite my understanding that she would be sending it to me. She stated that I was expected to download and complete it beforehand, which I was happy to do had I been clearly informed. She then aggressively placed the paperwork on the counter, creating an environment that felt far from welcoming--especially concerning given that this practice treats pediatric patients as well. As I filled out most of the paperwork, Kristen abruptly demanded the first sheet and became visibly upset when I didn't have certain information related to my wife. She continued to berate me in front of other patients, making the entire situation unnecessarily uncomfortable and unprofessional. At that point, I calmly stated that I didn't feel this was the right fit for me and prepared to leave. Realizing my personal information was still on the paperwork, I turned back to request it. Kristen initially ignored me, forcing me to go beyond the hallway to get her attention. When she finally acknowledged me, she became even more aggressive, to the point where she physically swung at me. I was in shock and asked her if she had actually just done that. She then accused me of intimidating her--even though I had remained still and composed throughout. At this point, Dr. Tim Kerr came out, visibly concerned. I explained the situation while Kristen continued to yell from the background, attempting to justify her behavior. While Dr. Kerr seemed like a decent person, he didn't appear particularly alarmed by what had just transpired. He suggested we "start over," but given the hostile environment, I made it clear that I would never feel comfortable receiving care there. After returning home, I did some further research and found another review from a patient who had an equally terrible experience with Kristen. This was disappointing, considering Dr. Kerr made it seem like my experience was an anomaly. It's clear that this receptionist lacks the professionalism and customer service skills necessary to be the first point of contact at a medical practice. She does not represent the values that a patient-facing role requires, and her behavior is completely unacceptable for a business that serves families and children. Unfortunately, my experience was so unsettling that I wouldn't recommend this practice to others. No patient should ever feel berated or unsafe when seeking medical care. These could be the best dentists in the world; I'm not willing to take the chance if this is what they deem acceptable for the first person who greats you as you walk in.

Dr. Rairigh's entire staff was courteous and professional, and accommodated our emergency visit. Over three visits in a week's time, Dr. Rairigh expertly corrected a botched procedure from our hometown oral surgeon. He set up a plan to install an implant using some pretty advanced techniques, including a 3D-printed drill guide custom-fit to my wife's teeth. He even took the time to show me the 3D printer in action in his office! (I was even able to get a cleaning during our visit! His hygienist, Laurie, is the best. My teeth felt cleaner than ever, and she was thorough and efficient. She also chatted with me as if we were old friends, calmly distracting me throughout the cleaning. Dr. Rairigh then came in to look at my x-rays and poke around my teeth. I wasn't left waiting in the chair for long at all, and Dr. Rairigh was gentle and informative.) We're setting up our entire family of five with this practice, and cleanings will now be a part of our visits to the area!

I moved to Chicago for 2 years and I was so freaked out by having to go to another dentist, I felt like I was cheating! I finally found one based on a recommendation from my roommate and while my experience was not as bad as I expected (I had horribly low expectations which I find helps with most things in life) I still wasn't "satisfied". After moving back to Pittsburgh and even though my current dental insurance doesn't work for his office I still go to them for my regular cleanings/check-ups because they're professional, friendly, efficient and gosh darn it they just do an awesome job!
