I started a caregiving relationship for my Mother with Comfort Connection in November, 2014, after she was discharged from a rehab facility (after a lengthy hospital admission/inpatient rehab). Our goal was to keep Mother in her home, her long-standing desire and a commitment I made to her which I intended to keep. Mother actually interviewed 3 caregivers from the agency in order to select someone with whom she would be comfortable, since we were seeking daily caregiving from Monday through Friday while I worked a full-time job (I was the overnight/weekend caregiver). Arriving each morning, Mother would enjoy her coffee and breakfast pastries with these caregivers, her music of choice playing on a CD in the background, while the two of them enjoyed lively and varied topics of conversation and laughter. They prepared meals, took her vitals twice a day, bathed her on a MWF schedule, administered her morning/evening medications, changed bed linens, and performed light housekeeping. As Mother's needs increased, they walked behind Mother's walker, sometimes utilizing a gait belt to keep her safe from falls. It was important to keep her mobile and her caregivers demonstrated patience and perseverance to keep her walking as long as she was able. As she progressed to a wheelchair and greater assistance was necessary with toileting activities, they were sensitive to her privacy and always kept her dignity uppermost in mind. The compassion and humanity they demonstrated as they handled her needs gave me comfort, knowing she was receiving one-on-one care and the personal attention she deserved. As Mother's dementia progressed and she was no longer able to feed herself, her caregivers adjusted accordingly so she didn't need to struggle. They monitored her vitals more closely, always timely reaching out to me with concerns should there be a potential need to seek greater medical attention. Their help accompanying me to her medical appointments and assistance with wheelchair transfers, getting in and out of the car and overall support made it easier to manage those necessary activities. Perhaps most important was the friendship and daily connection which met Mother's intangible needs. It was one of the reasons Mother thrived, along with the fact that she continued to remain in her home. When I needed assistance in the evenings or on weekends, the agency tried as often as possible to send her regular caregivers, or, if that was not possible, a caregiver who Mother knew/had stayed with her before. Although the agency's ownership/name changed to Nurses Unlimited and thereafter Accent Care, Mother's caregivers stayed the same and the relationships she had developed remained in place. This stability was so valuable in making her feel secure, comfortable and happy. When Mother was admitted to in-home hospice in early June of this year, Accent Care worked closely with me to provide 24-hour care. Mother was blessed to have the caregivers she had become close to, Maria and Angelica, during her last days. They worked closely and seamlessly with the hospice team. I will be forever grateful to them for the love, compassion and dignity which was part of the care they provided to her. Mother passed peacefully and comfortably at home. The 5-year partnership we sustained with Accent Care was critical to making that happen. Thank you, Shirley, and your team, for all you did over the past years for both Mother and me. I am currently employed with Nurses Unlimited (aka. Texas Home Health), and the considerateness and appreciativeness of the management make this company wonderful to work with. The office is also more organized than others I've been with in the past, and they are willing to listen and work through any issue that may arise. This sets them apart from other agencies. I have noticed the other employees with the company are nice people, and I enjoy the clients that I have had with this company.
