We saw a Box Turtle, a Blue Heron and Brown Trout holding at a small waterfall. We did about 3 miles of the 8 and is an easy trail that is open to pets and bicycles. It was also a nice surprise to my hubby that it is a popular trout fishery. We will definitely be back with our bikes, fishing rods, and a picnic lunch! In addition, this location also has a pickle ball court, playground, and a basketball court. Highly recommend!

Very informative, smaller museum with many artifacts thanks to long time friend; Emmett Forrest Jr. The museum and collection officially opened September 26, 2009. Sometimes the smaller museums will amaze you on how much an actor contribute to the entertainment industry. Andy Griffith and his many co stars were a wonderful contribution to daily television. Be sure to check out the lower level. o f the museum as well. Added this to your stop, as I did on my road trip. The museum cost is affordable $10.

There are two small section one upstairs and the down stairs. I would say this museum is on the smaller side. We were done within 25 mins. It reads, "The park design pays tribute to the architecture of the Blue Ridge Hotel, which once stood on the very same corner where the park will be. Robertson recalls living in the Blue Ridge Hotel with Carlos Jones as they both lived and worked on Main Street. "Carlos was killed in 1945 during WWII while he was serving in the Navy. Before he left, he and I both worked downtown. Memories with Carlos were mainly from staying at the hotel had one room together. I don't know how we paid for it... I didn't make but $6 a week and he didn't make much more - hotels must have been right cheap in those days. "He was a nice and friendly person. We got along real well... he was easy to get along with. He came from a good family and had several brothers..." The park officially opened on September 20, 2014. "The Blue Ridge Hotel (Inn) once stood on this corner of Oak and Main Streets; actually four of them were located here throughout the years. The first one was built around 1823 (made of wood)and after several years, it burned to the ground. The second Blue Ridge Hotel (Inn) was rebuilt sometime between 1835 and 1840 and it stood until the 1880s. The coming of the railroad in 1888 catapulted the Blue Ridge Hotel (Inn) to great heights. Around 1891 the third Blue Ridge Hotel was rebuilt at the same location, but the Great Fire on New Years Day in 1892 destroyed the hotel and the whole city block. Shortly after, a group of business owners rebuilt the hotel, which was revered as one of the best in the state, serving the community and many visitors until around 1965. The park design was built to commemorate the unique architecture of this iconic, grand hotel that was a beacon in this region for nearly 150 years." Everything is in its place and authentic to how she had it decorated. The two ladies at the back entrance were super friendly and a wealth of knowledge. We enjoyed walking through and looking at the decor and photos. Amazing art work from around the world. I loved hearing the stories and I could just feel a sense that I had met Gertrude while walking her halls. Thank you for allowing us to stop by right at closing!!

The Gertrude Smith House is located just outside of Downtown Mt. Airy. It is within walking…read moredistance or you can drive as they have a parking lot or you can park in the street. The 1903 house is on the National Register of Historic Homes. Admission is free to tour the Victorian house as that was part of Gertrude Smith's will that admission be free. Ms. Smith left her house by will to be kept as a museum and established a trust to care and maintain it. The house is kept as if it were in the early 1900s with furniture; artwork and decor. The tour begins in the back of the house and I was greeted and given some history of the house and Ms. Smith. The house is self guided so you can spend as much time inside as you'd like. The rooms have information to read about or you can just look at the contents from the antiques; photographs; artwork; furniture; etc. I highly recommend visiting this historic gem if you are in the MT. Airy area.

My grandfather's aunt (i.e., my great-great aunt) Elizabeth "Betty" Lee-Jones married (I believe) Chang Bunker's grandson, Franklin Davis Jones, in nearby Surrey, North Carolina in 1904. (The couple moved to Idaho. He died in the early Sixties; she died in 1973.)

They were joined by a bridge of cartilage. Why are they here? Well, during a trip to North Carolina, they simply fell in love with the state (Who wouldn't?) and in 1843, married Adelaide and Sarah Anne Yates, sisters native to the area. The brothers ran the plantation and lived together until tensions between Adelaide and Sara Anne forced them to set up separate households in the town of White Plains. Between their two marriages, the brothers produced a staggering 21 children. They passed in 1874 and their wives were buried next to them in their final plot. Some 1500 descendants of the twins still reside in the area. The grace is easy to find behind the church. There is parking in the church parking lot. I brought a pretty hopeless bike to them recently (rusted, rotted tires, disintegrated rim tape,…read morecompletely locked brakes, etc...) and needed help quickly getting new tires on and getting it clean and safe enough to at least ride, and they delivered! I couldn't spend more than $60 on tires and they had two options in the $21-25 range per tire which I was stoked about. I also had some tire tubes I brought in and they were happy to use them so I didn't have to buy a new set. Rim tape only cost a couple of bucks and their service fee was $15 for the basic tire change which I thought was fair. They got one break working which was better than nothing for free and I think I only paid about $75 after tax for the supplies and service. They had a wall full of repair tickets but thankfully were able to get my bike done within 24 hours. This place is also really handy because it's minutes drive from a portion of the greenway though I don't know how easy or safe it would be to walk a bike off the trail and over to the shop. They did mention they try to stay available for quick-fix bike emergencies on the greenway though so it's worth giving them a call if you need some help while biking on the trail. Overall I thought the work they did was affordable and quick and I was really happy with how willing they were to help even with such an old junky bike. I would recommend anyone check them out from hardcore cyclists to a family just trying to enjoy a bike ride at the park.
