    Andy Griffith Museum, Mount Airy
    Bruce K.

Perhaps the number one thing to do in Mount Airy and we really enjoyed it. Less than an hour to tour through this small museum, watching the clips from movies and TV shows, viewing the exhibits and reading through the explanations of all the memorabilia. Lots to see! I think it's best to come early just after they open as it's not a very large space and it does get crowded. And don't miss the Siamese Twins Museum across the street - there is a combined admission. Very cool place! For those of us of a certain age, we remember watching The Andy Griffith show. It's a small museum, but packed full of memorabilia. It told the story of a young Andy as well as his movie career, which I only had a little memory of. It was $11 per person entrance fee, with no discounts for military, police, fire etc. OK. We spent about 30+ minutes there and glad we did.

If you grew up watching Andy Griffith and still enjoy the high-on-nostalgia re-runs like my husband and I, you should drop in to tour this tiny slice of history. The town of Mount Airy - which was Andy's hometown for his formative years - is purportedly the inspiration for the show - though nothing was filmed there. That hasn't stopped the town from putting on a show of its own with shops paying homage to the once popular series. There's even a squad car - which apparently does tours. The museum has a bunch of show memorabilia-- costumes, those jail cell keys Barney always forgot - locking himself in, the courthouse/jail house doors, even a full set of Andy's jailhouse desk w/ Barney's chair (inscribed with scores of cast member signatures) & phone, Andy's justice of the peace gavel and more. There are tributes to Andy's singing career and his extensive acting career, including his early Mercado. There's a tiny building next door that houses a "Thelma Lou" collection and some other show memorabilia. The shocking lack of any "Aunt Bea" and "Opie" (Hello, Ron Howard?!) keepsakes was kind of stunning. Over in that ancillary building is a teeny glass cabinet that has her glasses (which don't seem like ones she wore on the show) and her SAG member card and old license. Yikes. There were reports that things weren't kosher b/n her a Griffith. That's sad. But the museum is ok, if a bit steeply priced ($20+ for 2 adults) A nice trip down memory lane.

Andy Griffith museum located in the Hollywood superstar hometown of mount airy, North Carolina which has adopted his famed show fictional town name of "Mayberry". The Museum is very small but a must visit for any fan of the show or the man himself. Costs $7 to get in and features wardrobe and set props from his famed Andy Griffith show. It also features some things from his later in life hit show matlock and some things from his stand up comedy career. The outside also features and awesome Andy and opie statue and some cool Mayberry murals. Overall a cool spot to visit and I assume if you are visiting mount airy it's probably because of this man or his show. So worth the stop in to check out.

We had a great time there!! Then we went to a restaurant called coaches sports bar. That was fun too. The best part was staying at the Motor Lodge Inn where Barney's car was.

When we visited mount airy over the summer, we did all the mayberrry tourist trap attachments. This is the Andy Griffith Museum. It was about eight dollars to get in and you got to walk around a small room and just see all of Andy's accomplishments of movies and TV shows over the years. I'm a big fan of Andy Griffith, so it was worth it.

The statue of Andy Griffith and Ronnie Howard is located in Mt Airy NC at the Andy Griffith Museum and Playhouse. It is located near the parking lot in an angle in front of the museum Free to enjoy

If your a fan of Andy Griffith, this is a pretty cool thing to check out. It is super cheap and shows a lot of what he did throughout his career. It's not very big, so it won't take long to get through. Definitely worth checking out.

For anyone whose childhood was in the 60s and 70s, The Andy Griffith Show was likely part of it (along with a few other iconic TV series). Back in the day before umpteen cable channels gave us so many choices as to cause selection paralysis (and now internet viewing options take that to another level), there were only four or five choices of what to watch on TV at any given time. During the summer months for me when I was on vacation break, the Andy Griffith Show was on the air a couple of times per day. I became intimately familiar with, and came to love and appreciate, the stories of Andy, Opie, Barney, Aunt Bea, Otis, Goober, Wally, Emmett, Howard and, of course my favorite, Floyd the Barber. Walking through this museum brought back all of the memories of watching the show. But this is one of those shows that was such a part of my life that the museum was truly a "times of your life" experience. I could almost hear the song "100 Years" by Five for Fighting playing in my head when I walked through. The museum itself was well done. For me, the $8+ admission fee was more than worth it. But I think it is a much better experience if the show has some nostalgic meaning for the patron, as was the case for me. The displays document Andy's life nicely, but the focus is on the show. Andy's sheriff uniform is displayed, as are the jailhouse keys. My favorite was the re-creation of the courthouse desk to look just like the show set. Some of the props in that display were original like the stick telephone and Deputy Fife's chair (which has since been bronzed), which made it all the better. But there are a few displays that go beyond the show. There is a display about Matlock, Andy's other successful but less iconic and often forgotten series. There are also displays about Andy's early life, early career and his music and recording ventures. In the annex is a display about Betty Lynn, who played Thelma Lou on the show and who had a special tie to Mt. Airy. There were also displays documenting the lives of Eng and Chang Bunker, the conjoined twins who gave rise to the term "Siamese Twins". They had ties to the Mt. Airy area. I would highly recommend this museum for anyone who has fond memories of the Andy Griffith Show or who is an Andy Griffith fan in general. Even if not, it offers a nice peek into Americana and the 1960s American experience. Make a stop here and spend the day in Mt. Airy. It's worth the time.

Bit small but great to see a place solely dedicated to appreciating the what this show was to America. Good place to stop by when checking out NC

So excited to visit here with family because we are all HUGE Andy Griffith Show fans! Went around the museum and loved learning about all of Andy's work. Loved seeing the artifacts from TAGS: his sheriff's shirt, Otis' suit, Goober's outfit, and more! The cost was $8 to enter. Completely worth it! Had a gift shop at the entrance to the museum with shirts, dvds, stickers, books, and autographs to purchase. Also, plenty of close, free parking was available. One of the annex exhibits across the courtyard was about Betty Lynn and was wonderful! This was totally a fangirl stop! Would visit again in a heartbeat! If you are looking for the Courthouse/Jail/Wally's Filling Station... this is NOT the same place. Those are down the road from this...

When we arrived in Mount Airy one evening we had to stop by this museum. The museum was closed, but you know that the exhibits had to be good. The town of Mount Airy is quaint with lots of cute shops and boutiques. The museum and playhouse is on the left as you go into downtown. The statue of Andy and Opie is sweet. It's life size and great to stand by for a photo. There's a courtyard and a picnic table.

Interestingly enough there are private residences mixed in as well. OK, so maybe it's really not incredibly riveting but it's still kinda interesting to see how early American life played out for Moravian, Black, and Indigenous peoples that lived in the South. A few of the buildings had docents in period dress relating the history of the particular house (some of these require separate admission tickets) or demonstrating their trades. For instance, we passed by a gunsmith's shop with a working craftsman inside, but it cost to go in. The whole area includes the Historic Town of Salem, the Gardens at Old Salem, the Frank L. Horton Museum Center, and the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) and is a few blocks from Winston-Salem's main downtown area, so probably best to park at the lot of the Museum/Gallery/visitor center and walk across the very cool Old Salem Covered Bridge to the village. We didn't have time to see all the grounds - which by the way, also have the site of the Original Site of Krispy Kreme Doughnut shop, which we did see, and were hugely disappointed by. It ain't nothing but an empty lot. But if you like old stuff like I do, you'll dig Old Salem even if you just go for half an hour. Plus it's mostly free.

The highlight for all three of us was definitely the stingray touch tank, getting that close and actually petting them was so cool. And seeing the penguins up close? Absolutely amazing. There's just something special about watching a child experience these things for the first time. It took me right back to when I came as a kid, and getting to share that with my grandchild made it even more meaningful. The staff was consistently friendly and helpful, the temperature inside was comfortable, and the weather outside cooperated beautifully. We also appreciated how manageable the crowds were and parking was better than expected, we even snagged a front spot! The reason this is four stars instead of five comes down to timing and expectations. We visited during spring break, which is one of the busiest weeks of the year, and unfortunately several exhibits we were looking forward to, including the red panda, the tigers, and the meerkats, were not available. For a week when families, grandparents, and school groups are specifically planning around this visit, you would hope the full experience would be ready to go. It was a noticeable disappointment, especially for the little ones. That said, what was available was genuinely enjoyable and we will definitely be back, hopefully with the full lineup next time!
