We did, and now at the age of barely 5, our little Henry has been diagnosed with SARDS. (Sudden Aquired Retinal Detachment Syndrome) He'll be completely blind in a month or so. He went from being a super hyper loving energetic active dog, to being hesitant, nervous, unable to track his toys, bumping into things etc. Weve done all the necessary things to insure his safety while he navigates his new normal, but our hearts are shattered for him. They asked for a $200 deposit, asked for $300 before the delivery, tried to get $750 before we met the puppy, asked for $110 in delivery fees after we asked why the puppy shipment tracker wasn't moving on delivery day. Speaking from experience, this is not a professional providing quality product. Quite the opposite. We put a down payment of a puppy, traveled six hours (in one direction) on pickup day, and was presented with a deformed dog. We got our money back, but our hearts were broken. We had spent a lot of time and money planning to bring this little guy home. In some way it is our fault for letting him do this to us. We had a previous experience with this breeder last December that was also heartbreaking. We had called for a puppy and was told one was available, but he was on the road and needed us to call back. When we called back on the scheduled date he told us the puppy had been sold to another party... days before Christmas... just heartbreaking. read more

I had a similar experience with Nuforest in 2009 as other reviews. My niece and I purchased a Black and Tan minature dachsund from Nuforest. Loki was quickly part of the family. I took Loki to the vet and found out that he had a hernia. Newforest made good on their contract...we had the option to return Loki or they would pay for the hernia surgery and also get him fixed. My vet did the surgery and everything was fine. Loki was a bigger dog and found out he was a cross between a mini and a standard....Nuforest was trying to make a super Doxie. We were looking for a family dog as a companion for my smooth red dachsund. Loki is now 13 years old and a great loveable dog. My female doxie passed away at 12 from panceatitis. Loki is still going strong. I sent pictures of Loki to Nuforest but they never responded. Loki also had lots of health issues which is common to Doxies...he had back surgery...benign tumors removed...and has arthritis...he also lost 20 lbs. He goes to physical therapy twice a week. He loves the swimming therapy and he is a much healthier dog. I do not blame Nuforest as it is a business and they did make good on getting Loki's hernia fixed. We love our dog....and he is going strong for 13 years. read more

I was looking to find the right breeder. I contacted Bill over the phone after telling me the entire history of miniature dachshunds (which I could appreciate) he mentioned he had two liters and I could visit their farm in Ramona. We acquired our beloved Pinto, a "mini" Dachshund at Nuforest. He's our second "mini". We got the other one (who's 9 pounds) from another breeder. Our dog was advertised to us via email as a "miniature smooth coated puppy". Which is exactly what we wanted. Plus when you go on Nuforest's website, they are all about only breeding Mini Doxies. Our dog is now 20 months old or so and we love him of course. He's a great dog. Intelligent, stubborn, playful... A Dachshund all around from a "personality" standpoint. But... Pinto is not miniature!!! He's about 11 inches at the shoulder. And weighs around 21 pounds! You read that right. Which does not qualify him as a mini at all. Of note, he is lean and very healthy. But again, he is not miniature by any measure. He's a regular Doxie!! What's annoying is that we were talking bout minis the whole time (twice) we were there. Of course, when you look at the "official" papers, it only states Pinto as a Dachshund. Not sure if that's the right naming protocol or not since it doesn't mention mini. Our bad I guess. We should have read the paperwork more thoroughly. We just weren't paying attention enough and were going off our earlier email exchanges stating the litter was of minis and the fact that the website says everywhere that they breed minis. And so we trusted that Pinto was a mini. Not saying they were, but to us looking back, it feels like the experience was disingenuous. Megasophagus Dachshund Update (4/13/2019) "Mega" dogs are born with a dilated esophagus and cannot get food or water down without vertical feeding. (Please read my previous review entitled, "Be Careful and Cover Your Back," originally from 2013). Tom is now eleven years old and we have kept him alive with dogged determination (please no pun) and a love for all living things. We (our family) have all suffered, but I assure you, HE has had a good life worth living. It has taken years to perfect our technique for nourishing him. These days Tom has six feeding 1.5 hours apart--food three times and water three times. He takes two heart drugs for congestive heart failure. The expenses have been staggering; in time and the money we can't afford for his vet care, but always find somehow. Otherwise he would have died years ago. No, we wouldn't have volunteered to take Tom before we fell in love with him that first week. We knew we couldn't let him go back to the puppy mill and certain death. His special needs prevent anybody but us from caring for him--it requires that much focus and skill. So for example, we haven't taken a vacation in eleven years. We have never been separated from him for a single day. That makes him in many ways a "lucky dog," to find us and to get so much love and constant attention. In that way he is special and different from other healthier pets. He loves the attention and it enriches his challenged existence. Today, we got especially unlucky and at 7am were forced to rush Tom to Tucson (75 miles away) to the Vscott Vet Hospital. He was in respiratory failure and had aspirated into the very bottom of his "mini" lungs--the result of a particularly bad bout of regurgitation of food and water the previous night. Right now he is on oxygen and fluids and has been x-rayed to confirm "aspiration pneumonia." He will be in the hospital for at least two days. We were required to deposit $2500.00 before they would even admit him. What caused this emergency was a particularly bad event, but one that happens almost every night, although fortunately, with less dire consequences. So somehow we have adapted to being awakened almost every night of our lives unless he has a "lucky night." Otherwise, he would be forced to lie in his own fluids and the remains of food that stubbornly lodges in his throat unmitigated even with vertical feeding and long sittings in his padded "bucket." We have stacks of "Tommy-towels" to mop up the fluids and food that inevitably soil the floors, furniture and bed daily. Imagine having a sick human infant for eleven years--how tired and constantly afraid you would be! It has been our private version of hell, notwithstanding our love for him and the pleasure we get from knowing we have beaten the odds and given him the great gift of life. I know what you are saying; is it humane to keep him alive? Yes, he is a wonderful, loving dog, and enjoys life in his own sweet way, having no idea all dogs don't cough and regurgitate. On good mornings he stands on a chair eating his food at our kitchen table for the vertical traction needed to gravitate it down his esophagus; and it keep his back legs strong for the sake of his fragile back. He "wolfs" his food like normal dogs and has a typical "weiner-dog"obsession with anything culinary. Unfortunately, anything he casually eats off the ground, like grass or rabbit pellets (his favorite), inevitably gets stuck in his throat sending him into head-twisting and convulsions, finally extricating it in a swish of fluid and partly digested food. He gets the best food money can buy, soaked in water overnight and ground up with a food processor. He is a miracle dog. Despite all of it, he has adapted and his life-force is a remarkable fact of nature. He loves his walks, cuddles with us on the bed, and lies by the open fireplace in the winter basking in the warm glow. He is a happy dog. We suffer more under the burden of his care than he ever will, but it makes us happy to have allowed him to survive and be loved like a normal dog. Thanks Nuforest! You are cutthroat criminals for what you deliberately did to us eleven years ago (please see my original review). It's called "Honest Services Fraud." You thought we were just dumb cowboys from Arizona and you could dump a dying dog on us. Well congratulations, you got away it with complete impunity. You could never repay us for the money (at least 8K so far), or more than the money, the years of emotional torment and Tom's daily suffering. You deceived and swindled us, but we did what any true animal lover would do and honored our pet with a decent enough life. We will continue for as long as it be humane to keep our little dapple mini breathing and happy. Beware breeders. Awful experience with these people. We drove a long way to view the puppy and the stupid old man gave us incorrect information about the price and the date we could pick up the puppy. We drove a very long way to pick up the puppy on the date he told us, the old man was extremely rude and unapologetic about the mix-up as if it was our fault when he was the one who told us the wrong date because he apparently got us mixed up with someone else. We purchased a puppy from Nuforest in 2004. She was the most beautiful, well socialized, loving, long hair red doxie. She passed at 16 and a half from cancer. She was sold to us as a mini but turned out to be a "tweenie" not mini, not standard. Nuforest really socialized their puppies well. Our pup Strudel was friendly and loved everyone. It's sad to read some of these unhappy reviews because we enjoyed our experience with Nuforest. I would like to echo Michael's review. My little guy will be 11 this month and we have gone through 2 back surgeries and he also has a hereditary eye condition called endothelial degeneration and has his own eye specialist now. Nuforest also certified the dog would have no hereditary eye conditions. His first back surgery was age 6, his second age 8 and his eyes started to go bad at age 7. I never tried to get them to make good on their guarantees, but I did contact them after the second surgery just to let them know about the back issues and the eye issue b/c they always said they would like updates and took their breeding seriously. They NEVER wrote back to me or cared in the least. My letter was very kind. I was not blaming them, but trying to get some feedback or sense of care from them. I got nothing. If you want to for one second try and blame me and care of my dog, he is VERY well cared for and is crated when not under supervision. I sacrifice so many parts of my life to take care of him and won't even trust him to a kennel or day care so haven't had a vacation in years. We have spent over $15,000 between his two surgeries and rehab in addition to his eye specialist and medications and appointments every 6 months. So if you think I am letting him jump up or down off things or walk stairs think again b/c I don't enjoy wiping my ass on the benjamins it has taken to keep my little guy walking and seeing. I don't blame the Bucks for what happened, but I do have an issue with the way they literally ignored my emails and suddenly we were not a part of the Nuforest family anymore once we had a problem. read more

So I have a wonderful 4 year old girl named Bean. When I first went up to meet I was assured she would be a mini and wire haired. We met the stud and the bitch both looked wired haired. When we came to pick Bean up she didn't look wired at all. So no at age 4 I have a well tempered dachshund who isn't a mini (she's 14 pounds) and isn't wire haired at all. 10/22/2019 I am soon receiving another doxie from the Bucks. I have re-read all of these reviews and have a comment. If you seriously want a guarantee about anything in life, good luck and let me know where to get one!!! This breed no matter where obtained has a predisposition for many things like back issues, cushions disease, eye issues, thyroid problems, kidney stones and on and on. There a mini's and tweenies and standards and it difficult to pinpoint exactly what their size will be just like people. If you want something that is tiny get a tea cup yorkie- now there are some health problems there... But when you love a certain breed you buy the vitamins, get the pet insurance, brush their teeth feed them proper nutrition, keep their weight down, exercise them and do not allow them to jump off of things and cross your fingers!!!! I have had 14 dachshunds in my lifetime and have spent from $50.00 in the early days to $2500.00 per puppy... they are amazing creatures but like most things in life there is a cost. If you don't have the financial where with all and commitment it will take then get some fish. Owning animals is expensive and a risk. Seriously people, can we step back, be kind, be grateful and recognize that there are complications with the majority of things in life and if we do not have something nice to say then save it. The Buck's do not get to defend themselves here and I find it hard to believe that they would do anything with deliberate malice and please remember we are all entitled to earn a living and are ALL trying to do the best we can......... read more

I wish I saw my own post before I acquired two dogs from Nuforest... Nuforest is not dedicated to preserving only the best, the most desirable traits of their dogs to breed healthy, well balanced dogs. I am a long time owner of two of Nuforest dogs: Tess 11 years old and Carmen eight. My first dog was such a joy that after three years we have added one more. Carmen, the second pup developed a growth on her front leg that was deemed malignant. We were very upset and shared the information with Nuforest. They sold us the dog only three months earlier, but already didn't care. There was no response to our email, no interest in the outcome, no emotional support. Luckily, upon reexamination the diagnosis was corrected, no amputation was needed and Carmen is fine. The other dogs, including my old, handicapped rescue doxie and the first we got from Nuforest are not so fine, due to Carmen't temperament issues. She constantly attacks the other two dogs. If Carmen was the only dog in our household, it would not matter, but with other dogs around, she is a problem attacking other dogs for attention or food. The original dog has bladder stones and required two surgeries up to date, custom food (I cook for all our dogs) and countless bladder infections. I didn't bother informing Nuforest about that after their reaction to potentially detrimental health info about Carmen. As breeders, they should make sure that only the best dogs are selected for breeding. It is obvious, that they do not pay attention to feedback about health issues, thus not eliminating potential problems from their dogs gene pool. read more

I strongly urge you to look elsewhere, and not support this breeder. Other reviewers have accurately suggested that the Bucks are in this business for the money and seemingly nothing else. I cannot deny that their Dachshunds are beautiful. We picked up our first Dachshund two weeks ago and he is happy, healthy, and just the cutest guy ever. We fell in love with him and would not be able to bring ourselves to return him despite the scummy things we discovered about the Bucks and Nuforest after bringing him home. His incredible temperament, looks, and pedigree are the only reason I am giving Nuforest two stars instead of one. I will admit we missed one big red flag leading up to the purchase, which was their total lack of interest in us. I don't think Bill or Susan knew very much about the person who was going to take home their dog apart from my name and email address. To prospective first-time puppy buyers, think twice about a breeder who doesn't seem to care about where their dogs are going. If your conversations with the breeder only cover money and logistics, that should be pretty telling about their motivations for breeding in the first place. When the time came to buy the dog, we eagerly signed a contract conditional upon buying pet insurance and keeping our dog on a snake oil supplement from the company NuVet. If you are interested in buying a dachshund from Nuforest, do some research on what people have said about the NuVet supplement, or you can take my word for it: You are only able to order this stuff using the breeder's identification number. This is because breeders who include contractual obligations for their customers to use the supplement receive kickbacks from NuVet for the amount sold using the breeder's ID. It is included in our contract that we must continue to order this supplement throughout the dog's entire life specifically using Nuforest's ID with NuVet. It is not much more than a way for the breeder to continue to skim off the top after they have collected your cash. There were some other bizarre things during the transaction such as Bill receiving a call in the middle of our meeting from who he said was MasterCard. While on the phone he repeatedly and demandingly asked us if we had brought him cash to pay for the dog, then reassured the person on the other line that he would have $X cash for them today. There is not much I can say about this that isn't speculation, so you can make of it what you want. Apart from Nuforest's unethical business practices, we were also unhappy with Bill's questionable social conduct. He touched my girlfriend several times during the meeting. He did not touch her anywhere exceedingly inappropriate, but he certainly took his liberties. I found out after the meeting that he had hugged her around the waist when I went to the car to get my checkbook. I won't make any assumptions about what is good social conduct in Ramona or where ever Bill may have been raised, but I am not in the habit of being okay with men we hardly know touch my girlfriend, especially one who is representing his breeding company. He was also occasionally rude and seemed overall distracted from the task at hand, which also seemed unacceptable considering that he was supposed to be instructing first-time puppy owners on caring for their animal. Again, the dogs are fantastic, but you can find dachshunds of this caliber many other places. The Nuforest dachshunds are already comparatively expensive, so I highly recommend spending the money elsewhere and giving it to a breeder who actually cares about sending their pups off to live happy and healthy lives. I was thoroughly disappointed by my first puppy buying experience, and while I couldn't be happier with my little guy, I wish I had been more patient and found a better breeder. read more

I purchased my mini dachshund from NuForest nine years ago and the dog has been healthy and happy ever since then. Great disposition. No medical issues at all. In reply to previous poster Michael B.: I don't have the contract at hand (and would have to really look to find it), but I seriously doubt that a breeder would guarantee that a dachshund (who are very well known for having back problems) would not have any back INJURIES. Injuries are not due to the dogs breeding, but to the inherent problems with the dogs having long spines. They may have guaranteed that the dog would not have any congenital deformaties, but no one can predict that a dachshund wouldn't have a back INJURY. I have owned four dachshunds over the years, and none of them suffered any back problems. It is up to the owner to make sure that the dog doesn't strain their backs from people picking them up without supporting their spine and that the dog isn't allowed to jump off from high furniture, etc. read more

Nuforest is one of the most respected dachshund breeders in the San Diego Area. Bill and Susan have been showing and breeding dachshunds for over 40 years! They are members of the San Diego Dachshund Club along with the Dachshund Club of America and listed as top breeders with the American Kennel Club. For some of the reviews to state that they are in it for the money, of course they are!!! This is what they DO!!! To have purebred, show quality puppies that are AKC and aren't from a Puppy Mill, we have to have breeders like the Bucks and to do this, they have to make money just like everyone else. If they didn't make any money, they wouldn't be able to continue to have these beautiful dachshund puppies for us to buy. They are healthy and well taken care of. I have worked with the Bucks when I wanted to breed my Female dachshund and they were always helpful and a wealth of information. I purchased a male long haired miniature dachshund from the Bucks in September of 2012 and they were wonderful people and my little guy is perfect!!!!. From our first contacts via email, I could tell that they really take breeding seriously and love the dachshund breed. Not only are they one of the top dachshund breeders in the US, they treat their animals well and with lots of love and affection.They raise the puppies in their home until they are ready to go, and their grandkids play and hold the pups too to get them socialized. Bill Buck took time going over all of the paperwork with us and made sure we knew how to care for our little guy. He also answered several of our questions. They do have a health guarantee on any breeding defects as long as you properly care for your dog throughout its life. He told me that in all his years of breeding, he has only been aware of 2 of his dogs developing back problems. On the way out, Bill gave us a tour of the kennel and introduced us to some of his dogs and they were all happy and well cared for, My dachshund is now 7 months old and so perfect! He has so much personality and loves to play and be loved on....perfect specimen of the breed. We get compliments on how handsome he is all the time. I purchased 2 puppies from Bill Buck many years ago as a breeding pair. Besides giving us many litters of beautiful pups they were the the best dogs we have ever owned. I was bonded with the girl and my wife was bonded with boy closer than any other dogs we have ever owned. Sadly they have both passed on now, but we will never forget these special dogs. I bought a smooth male in 2002 and a wirehair female in 2005. They have decent temperaments and both are on fresh food diets (Honest Kitchen) with the best supplements (Seapet, vitamin B complex, organic coconut oil, etc.). Both are walked regularly and kept fit and trim. They ARE beloved members of my family. However, both dachshunds have had back flare ups from IVDD and both have had to have strict crate rest, prednisone, etc. for 8 weeks. Twice for the male and once for the female. The male has pretty severe arthritis in his hips which started at age 10. The female wirehair has a malformed hip bone on the left side, causing pain/discomfort when she walks. She's only 9 and otherwise very active and playful. Like other reviewers, I would call/write the Bucks when my dogs were diagnosed with IVDD because I thought they took their breeding program seriously. Like others, I was treated rudely, or ignored completely. They're basically commercial breeders. They are not ethical and totally in it for the $$$$. I purchased my first dachshund from Bill and Susan Buck 9 years ago. And we purchased a second 6 years ago. Both pets were purchased under a guarantee from the Bucks to be free of hereditary back problems and other health issues, and if one of their puppies ever was diagnosed with paralysis due to hereditary disk issues they would fully refund the price of that puppy provided 1) the pet was provided a well balanced diet like Iams, 2) the pet was maintained on a Nuvet vitamin and 3) VPI pet insurance was purchased for the pet. I have always maintained my part of the contract and I have paperwork to back it up. But when I contacted Bill regarding my three year old's back issues and that she had permanent spinal cord damage, he would blow me off and tell me they would get back to me. Finally on the last and fourth call to the Buck's, I was told that there had been one other claim and they were filing bankruptcy and gave me their attorney's phone no. to contact. It is now three years later and I see they are still in business however the guarantee they once offered has been altered. I'm now writing this review as my first puppy, Heidi, was just diagnosed with auto-immune spinal menagiits. I don't believe that the Buck's are offering the health free, genetically tested and matched animals that they claimed to be selling at the time. Don't get me wrong, I love my girls. They give me hour after hour of love and companionship, and I would do anything to help them. But I find it very disingenuous to put into place a guarantee, require an owner to jump through hoops to keep that guarantee valid and then bale when things go badly. All I was looking for was the return of my purchase price (per the guarantee) to help offset the medical costs of my little baby's surgery. Especially after spending hundereds of dollars on vitamins and pet insurance, required by Bill Buck to keep the contracted guarantee in place. Vitamins from NuVet, which he personally told me he received a kick back from the company. I think these people are VERY DISHONEST, LIARS AND CHEATING SCOUNDRELS.
