It's rare you can go into a barber shop and just roll the dice. They won't talk to you unless you talk - so if you're having a day and just want some peace and quiet they'll leave you be - but they will get really engaged if you do want to talk. Stepan (pronounced Stephan) is the owner and he's a local guy. The effort he puts into keep a clean shop and keeping his customers happy is very obvious - it's easy to see his gifts as a business owner and barber. They also are the only ones in the area to sell Layright hair products and lower than you can get on Amazon. I've been to all the local barbers over the last few years and these guys are a cut above. Get it. Like a haircut above.

I called up to ask details about where he went and the person on the phone claims to not know. A proactive email letting me know Nestor is no longer employed would have been appreciated, rather than act like the guy never existed. I understand people move on, but a barber is sort of a personal experience and when you settle into a guy who knows how to do it great, it sucks trying to find someone new and start from scratch.

Anyway, so at Boris, the price is $32 for a men's cut. Prices recently went up this year (like everything else) but this place is still half of what you'd normally pay elsewhere. As far as barbers here, I've been to Olga who is really good, but recently my go-to guy is Sergey. His cuts are great and I always leave with a great clean cut! So guys, stop the insanity of $65 plus cuts at a beauty salon and go to Boris!

I don't want to tell you who gives the best haircut because she's always so busy and it's hard to get an appointment - but she deserves all the praise. So if you got get Masha. They're all fantastic but Masha can do a fade and a straight razor shave like she grew up in downtown Chicago. She makes me so damn handsome. Also, her sister Natasha works here too and she does an incredible pedicure. It's the perfect balance between luxury and price. I won't go anywhere else in the Northshore again.

Unfortunately, even though I arrived on-time (early actually), I had to wait about 15 minutes past my reservation time. I was also a little disappointed that the floors were not cleaned between appointments. It felt a bit weird to walk through a lot of hair to get to my seat. I had my hair cut by Maria who said she has been there for 18 years. I feel like she did a pretty good job. I liked the way it looked afterwards and she was easy to talk to while she cut my hair. I found out at afterwards that they only take cash, check, and Venmo. I usually pay everything by credit card. Thankfully, I had enough cash to pay for the visit. Overall, I tend to think I will return the next time I need a cut.

I've been here once before with Marcos where I requested the same haircut. The experiences were polar opposites. The start of the consultation was rough. Sal was tentative, impatient, and combative with me. I felt he wanted to place blame on me for not understanding the haircut I wanted. But when I had the haircut with Marcos, it never escalated like how it did today. I put the rough start behind me to just focus on the haircut. I thought the experience ended better than it started. However, the hair doesn't lie. One side is longer than the other (see photo). I don't believe Sal is a bad barber by any means. It's completely possible it was an off day. I simply think he was't able to recover from the tense beginning and so, the haircut ended up being rushed and uneven.
