Courses aren't too huge, which means you can try a few (guessing this is why they are reasonably priced) I have tried quite a few things on the menu and usually ask for a variation of a cocktail i like, as an accompaniment, from the bar staff, who are all very good at putting a slightly different twist on something you are used to. The music is never too loud, or obvious, which is also good, and they keep the numbers down at the weekends to ensure the customers inside aren't too crowded. This place is a step in the right direction for Aberdeen.

We ordered a drink to start which was the Bacon Maple Old Fashioned, which was lovely and I would have ordered another if there wasnt so many different cocktails to try on the menu. For food we ordered the Philli Cheesesteak each with sweet potato fries and wagon wheel onion rings to share. Food came quickly and there was a lot of it, it was well prepared and tasted amazing. I could have eaten another of the cheesesteak but instead I filled myself up with more cocktails. I would recommend the milkshakes, we tried the boozy brulada and chocolate salty balls and they did not disapoint. We ended our visit with two other cocktails, the taste the rainbow and caramel jack (which was my partners but wish I had gotten for myself). The staff were friendly and never had you waiting for long to be served. Next time I visit Aberdeen I will be heading back here, just wish there was one in Glasgow.

Essentially, North Sea Haddock and Chicken Breast dipped and fried in their housemade beer batter. It was pretty good. Why don't we do more beer-battered chicken in the states? They had a great drink menu too, full of craft beers and creative cocktails. I have to admit the tables were pretty grimy and some were in bad shape (foam coming out of chairs, etc). Service overall was so slow and nonchalant (good thing we had plenty of downtime!) and the manager who took our tab was in a foul mood. We couldn't really complain too much though since it was one of the few places open late that wasn't a takeaway on a Monday night. The ambience is what it is, just take your time, enjoy, don't be in a hurry if you come here. TL;DR: If you're okay taking it slow, want decent food, fun drinks and have plenty of time to hang-out then this is the place for you.

Illicit Still is definitely not trying to be anything it isn't, and it isn't calling to a flashy or young audience, but if you're in Aberdeen and looking for an authentic British pub experience, you'll enjoy it here. The location, across from the townhouse was very convenient to where I used to live on Schoolhill, and it's easy to get to from anywhere in the city centre. With the recent construction and changes to and around Broad St, the pub is even more visible and might get higher traffic. Now that I've said that, I'm curious if it is! Definitely worth a revisit!
